Life day?

akevvakevv Member Posts: 208

With pretty much every other MMO, real life holidays are reflected in the game environment. It has been a long time since SWG has done this. Even Tabula Rasa had a Halloween event even though it was not yet public. With the dev push for Chap 8, I wonder if they will forget Wookie Life Day? I predict no Life Day and a very buggy Chapter 8. It seems anytime they made a publish tied to a date, it was an absolute mess. If they even remember to insert Life Day, it will be a recycle of last year, which was a recycle of the previous. I wonder what excuses the fanbois will come up with for the overlooked Life Day?

"They were too busy planning a bastardized version of CH to do Life Day properly."

Oh, that was last year's excuse.

    Sorry.

CH, Jedi, Commando, Smuggler, BH, Scout, Doctor, Chef, BE...yeah, lots of SWG time invested.

Since Christmas 2004 (2003 was the Holocron giveaway), there's been a Life Day celerbration every year.  Other holidays during the year haven't been officially supported though but they do usually encourage people to create their own events with the ingame tools.  I'm sure many will say this is just the Devs being lazy, but the events people come up with is one of the things I like about the SWG community - each server has its own unique events.

For Halloween this year I suprised my guild with some deco work in the guild City :D

The blocks you see to the right are what I used to wall off the majority of the shuttle port.  People shuttling in were dirrected through a tunnel that featured Nightsisters and effects before they could get into the city :)

That's pretty cool Obraik. I can remember when the devs were able to spawn mini krayts and had nightsisters running around in Theed in the past. Life Day was a pretty big production back then too. The last real development for Life Day was the year of the NGE. Since then, it has just been recycled. I guess this year will be the same too, if they remember to turn it on...

Is there a real need to re-develop it though?  The way they've done it has been a pretty good representation of what Christmas is (outside of the religous aspect)...giving and recieving gifts under a decorated tree.

They did actually make a change to it last year though.  You were given two boxes...one was for you to keep and open and the other you traded with a friend who could then open it.  The friend boxes had to be traded to be opened, you couldn't open them on the original character that recieved them.  The box you got for yourself had 2 guaranteed items and 1 random while the friend boxes had just the 1 random item.  The previous year (2005) you just got the one box with a random item inside.

I'm not really sure I'd want them to get rid of that, it was kinda fun to meet up with friends and guild members in our city to exchange gift boxes.  It, *gasp*, felt like Christmas :P

Seems to me like that post was just a bash at the NGE rather than her actually thinking they're degrading life day.

I think the idea of turning one of the gifts over to a friend is a good thing. I think that has been in place for two years now though. I seem to remember getting several gifts right after NGE and then last year too, but perhaps it has all blended into one memory.

SWG should do more at the holidays than expect the players to stitch content together. If the other MMO's do it, then a level of service has been established. If they don't meet the industry standard, then its just another bad mark I think. Let's hope that they don't overlook Life Day. I think its important.

It would be cool to get some free game time too, heh. I don't think I will be paying until some of the basic flaws are addressed. I played for a long time after NGE waiting on some animations and such, but they never came back. I would be happy to share my gifts and some game time with some folks that I miss though...

Actually, I was concerned that the devs will forget to at least recycle Life Day because of them rushing the other publish. It would be great to see them put some effort toward some new stuff for Life Day, but that is a real long shot considering how all of the other holidays are ignored for several years running now.

I think it really says something that the folks over at WoW are adding these sort of "holiday events" to their schedules...more ingame "special" events that create a sense of anticipation amongst the playerbase.  Meanwhile, over at SWG, it's time to once again every four-six months tweak the combat system in the endless quest for balance in duels.

swg used to have holidays and what not... I remember on April Fools day the Dev's had ewoks attack all the major cities and had a giant ewok attack it as well. I even have pictures of the events if you wish to see them :)
