Im done with EQ2...i thought for sure that ROK would bring new light into the game, but alas, it is the same old fantasy grind that i have come to hate.  Playing griders since 1999, i cannot believe it has taken me this long to wake up.

I have passed TR in the store for far too long.  I have trolled this thread and watched the responses to this game improve and now that it has an 8.5, i cannot ignore it any longer.  My girlfriend and I will be joining the ranks this weekend and hope to see some of you guys there.

I'd save some of the excitement until you actually get the game and KNOW you like it :)

Don't get me wrong, I love TR and have quit EQ2 for it as well.  But I've seen too many people get all "omg, this is greatest thing ever, gonna buy it, love it, play forever!" and then 2 days later they are like "oh man, this isn't what i expected...".   Anyhow, cautious optimism is the way to go before you've actually tried the product :)

    Enjoy TR!

Welcome to TR, if your on Pegasus look up Apollonia, I'll be happy to help ya!  I left EQ2 a while ago, though its a fine game with great classes (I played a Defiler) I just got completely sick of the Fantasy genre and the same old grinding on mobs that sit there waiting to be killed.

    Current Games: WOW, EVE Online

Is TR really that good? Im playing EQ2 atm but i confess i am a bit tired of fantasy based MMOs. I took a look at screenshots and i found it nice but nothing special, at least graphics.

TR is really fun and does take a lot of skill to play. It's awesome to see how much stronger you get every level you go up even if its not a noticable difference. Theres a huge amount of weapons and armor and you hardly ever see someone walking around looking exactly like you (especially with the paint items). The game starts you off right awaya in the middle of a fight and doesn't stop. At level 5 you get to make your first and most important choice in the game of Specialist or Soldier and choosing between either path you can really notice a difference. It's a fun game and great to try, as long as they implement some endgame content in 2 months or so it'll be extremely fun and continue to grow.

    enjoy.

I posted to get a trial key in the appropriate thread because this game does seem like a nice alternative to the fantasy games ive played of late.

It sounds more like a fps than a rpg though, not that i mind. Could anyone offer some details on how it deviates from just a fps?

Basically you level up and choose which of your ~4 stats you want to pour more points into. You also have a moderately detailed skill tree. Something like WoW's trio of trees; only shorter. Otherwise there is a limited crafting system, etc.  You won't ever get that FPS feel out of the game, though. It's a fairly easy mode game if you are used to a bit of the shooters.

Tr is a fairly average game. Not even close to a 8.5...give it a month maybe two and it'll start to drop like a rock.

Mmorpg gaming scores are seriously misleading. Theres games listed with scores over 6.0 that don't deserve higher than a 1.0 The only true definition of a great game is the amount of active accounts after the first month or two...everything before that means nada... who buys a game and doesnt play the free month? Yet how many say "yeh right" when they have to pay to play...

I'll wait and see. Played beta, saw the way the game was going, got extremely bored, moved on. Seen it on friends pc's, watched them play, listened to thier cripes and totally agree.

This game will be dead in 6 months. Just like eq2..just like ryzoms, just like horizons...only the most hardcore will play....the target gamer public, long gone...

Life is about Living, Sleep is about Dreaming, Games are about Strategy!

I played EQ2 and WoW and regretted spending the money on both.  My friends play EQ2 and cannot understand what is so bad about it.  I hate rating systems in general since I do not think they will ever truly gauge whether you will like it or not.

I enjoy the hell out of TR.  I have only an hour or 2 a night to play and TR suits the bill.  So does GW for me.  I like that as well.  EQ2 does present a lot more options for detailed character development.  Ultimately, though, all these games come down to making the right build with the right gear and attack the right way.

TR is just new and offers some new ways to handle combat that is an improvement.  I like the fact that trees can provide cover, that one or two shots can kill, and the expansionability of the game is fantastic.

I think it is really up to what you will make of it.

EQ2 from 1-70 is basically the "Same old fantasy grind".  Did you seriously think that a expansion was going to change the core of the game or change the genre?

    -Currently looking forward to FFXIV

-Currently playing EvE and Global Agenda

That is probably the best thing about TR is that I haven't yet seen a single mob that was "sitting around waiting to be killed."

The wildlife attacks each other, grazes on grass, moves in herds...

The Bane patrol for targets, though usually are dropped right into a combat zone...

If I wasn't so d*mned engrossed in Mass Effect I'd be playing TR...

So by your own definition there, World Of Warcraft is the greatest MMO of all time?

Being "great" or "good" is an entirely subjective measure. You could say the Beetles are the greatest band ever, but I don't like the Beetles. It's an opinion.

So, society labels things as "great" and "good" if they-

    1. Are very popular

    2. Make a lot of money

Something the Beetles have done a whole heck of a lot of.

    So has World of Warcraft.

So by that definition, WoW is indeed the greatest MMO of all time.

...and with that reasoning you could say the same about McDonalds and food?

It really is not that simple. The only true thing one could say with regards to WoW is that it sure has the most subscribers ever in the  mmorpg genre. That one thing we know for sure. But explaining why WoW has achieved that success would require a somewhat more elaborate reasoning than merly stating that it is the "best" of all times.

I would not say that McDonalds delivers the best food of all time, and the same thing applies to Microsoft OS and a whole bunch of other "success stories".

    .............
    When in doubt, troll.

I've heard the "compare WoW to Mcdonalds" shill a hundred times.  The point of his post was to say that IF you base your idea of "what is the best game" on how popular they are and how much people like it, then you'll end up with the most widely known.

Its not to say that these items are better, per se, it's just like, if you go into a store and see 5 different kinds of underwear but only recognize the name HANES then thats the underwear you get, (or the vast majority that buy based on product knowledge and consumer popularity and/or advertising)

You can really look at it however you want though, I'm just here to help

NO!  Because MMOs have nothing to do with hamburgers, let alone franchised fast food industry.   I'm so tired of seeing this comment.

Comparisons like this are pointless.  For one you completely ignore that one is a specialized segment of computer games and then make a comparison about a fast food chain and how it compares to every other edible on the planet.  Which will eventually just lead to refining the discussion of fast food to burger king, wendys, etc.  None of which deals with digital elves and orcs.

UGH!  Talking about hamburgers has no relevance on computer games.

I disagree, sometimes I eat hamburgers while playing computer games.

You will quickly realize TR is no different in terms of grinding, its still a level based grind fest masked in Tiers. You will also quickly realize the lack of content, if you have been playing EQ for as long as you stated then im sure your used to having allot of content, TR lacks that in a huge way, the missions are repeats of the same type from zone to zone. So be ready to waste money on a game you will leave soon enough.
