Well,
I bought the game about a week ago, and this is my views on the game.
Firstly the installation was a total pain, they really could have made that a whole lot better.
The controls felt really awkward, clunky and totally nonintuitive, even now they don't feel smooth. I am getting used to them a bit more, but i doubt they will ever feel natural.
The gameplay is good fun, not very challenging at low levels, but enough to keep you from falling asleep.
The biggest gripe I have is the difficulty in obtaining gil, at 25 I can't even afford all my spells, let along think about getting out of my newbie gear. Farming gil myself I found impossible, I guess I do have the option of killing mobs 10 levels below me for item drops to sell, but a week into the game having to spend 50% of my time killing stuff that far below me seems ridiculous, and NOT fun.
If it wasn't for this issue I would be really enjoying the game right now. But I'm not. Either I am going to give up on the game before my first month, which is the most likely, or I might break all my principles and go down the RMT route just so I can buy all my spells, let alone think of getting out of the newbie gear. Frankly if I have to dip my hand in my pocket after just 25 levels to make the game enjoyable, when will the next time be?
Something is seriously broken in the economy if I am even tempted to go down the RMT route, let alone feel it is the only way to give this game a fair shot this early into the game.
I don't want this turning into a RMT flame thread, I don't support RMT whatsoever, but can certainly understand if people in my position felt they had to go down that route if they were picking the game up for the first time today.

I haven't played FFXI yet (damn pol 0011 error code), but I think they made it that way so you have to craft and sell items to make money instead of mob everything in sight. It makes sense to me not to give Gil away from just killing things, otherwise the "player-driven economy" would be full of Gil and few crafted items to buy because no one would craft them.
Keep in mind this is a a guess. Any help?
WHEN DID CREATIVITY DIE
Well though out the FF series you always had to party. FFXI is the same way. YOU MUST PARTY TO GET AHEAD IN THE GAME. If you try to solo at all you will fail. From lvl 1 to lvl 9 you can solo but after that you MUST go to the dunes and find a group of people and money will come pretty easy. If you cant afford atleast beetle armor at lvl 25 then your doing something wrong. Also, did you get your sub job? that will help you alot.
If it is your first character. This is all i can give you as hint.
1. Never buy expensive stuff. as a rdm, you don't need all fancy items. As a mage just wear something cheap that adds up. Melee wise, you have to buy armor but armor aren't expensive if you know what you are doing.
2. Need money? RESEARCH. Its very simply, you character have 7 selling space, so buy a mule for 1 buck more, and leave him at City like Bastok. Now the good part is. Check FFXIAH.com for prices of items. As beginner hint, i will give it to you Bronze Knife sell from NPC @ bastok for 170 gil. You can sell them @ 4000 in Jeuno. RESEARCH more, you can rank up some fame and buy item cheaper, there are people in Whitegate very lazy in buying spell, you can also buy Spells from NPC and sell it @ a slightly higher price on AH as well making roughly 2-5k differences. (repose make 10k differences).
3. DO QUEST, MORE RESEARCH. What sell the most from quest? SCROLLS! You can do aspir easily in windurst and warp II or even warp I and sell for 50-100k. The problem is you must have a level 10 character with specific RANK. Just search these scrolls name up @ ffxiwiki.
4. DO RANKS, as you do ranks...you will notice... you gain MONEY from rank. rank 1-5 is almost soloable if you do your research ahead as a 25. (as you get help for the NM fight @ tower and beadeux). It will earn you a nice income of 10k ,20, 30k 40k and 50k per rank.
5. Don't Craft unless you have the foundation.... DO H.E.L.M.... what is helm? check ffxi wiki "hobby". Never listen to other people who keep tell you "Farm farm farm and craft craft craft" I have 2level 75 restarted with 0 cash (of course i have more high level but i am talking about accounts wise). I NEVER ONCE FARMED NOR CRAFTED. and guess what...i played the most expensive class in the game "CORSAIR"
6.Need cash? Go level your sub, as you level sub you earn "crystal" hence it pays to keep RANK high for longest duration of signet.
a. Signet can give you conquest point. - you can buy items with it and "SELL" it. Check ffxi-ah.com for the price and get the "best" return.
b. Crystals sell nicely @ starter city. NEVER throw away ANY. Always sell them
7. my last hint for you is..... KEEP beastman seals and kindred seals!!!!! These are great incomes at endgame.
I hope they help...if you play on asura i can give you hints in person...but NOT money. Money is something you earn yourself and spend yourself.
and FFXI is a game that need researches, if you can't research ahead i suggest you quit.
none
wow lvl 25 in one week thats insane i've been playing for about 1 1/2 months im only 21 but i've also been on an off along with computer issues. As for the controls get a control guy this game wasn't made for a keyboard it was made for a console( I don't know what you run it on and if you use a controller just assuming since i use one and i notice a huge difference). Be patient also this game takes off 50+ im told. Start leveling other classes like thief for gil and crystals , gil is easy if you devote time to it. and lastly LINKSHELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!, get one. If your on Asura look me up or poddle we can get you a pearl.
You could say I was in your same exact situation when I started the game when it came out in NA for PC. I was around 25 and was missing and couldn't afford spells and was still in low level gear. I did farm things and sell drops from exp mobs on the AH (Auction House) and such. One easy solution to your problem, is fishing.
Fishing is probably the most newbie friendly craft. But, seeing as how you just want to advance and have no problem making money in the process...I don't know if it'll help. You can fish with a Hume Rod and little worms either in the lakes/water areas around the cities. Moat carps are what you would probably want to aim for, since they sell extremely well in the AH.
Depending on what mage job you are leveling, you don't need every single spell to advance. I know I was missing some spells all the way to 75. I just didn't feel like paying the amount the AH was selling them for and I could never get them to drop when I actually fought the monsters that dropped them. Either way, making gil in this game is not all done by being able to get crystals and other drops to sell in exp. Sometimes you either need to kill stuff, or do a craft or even work the AH just by using NPC shops that people are too lazy to go to, even though they are 3 steps away from the AH.
Making gil is not easy to come by for sure in this game. But, if something like that would make you want to resort to RMT, perhaps this isn't the game for you. No matter how poor I was in this game. Down to my last few hundred gil, I never once thought about RMT. Just like in a normal RPG, some things you just can't afford while trucking through the game unless you save up for it by taking a break from the story. Just have some patience and do a bit of research to have the many ways of making gil open up to you.
I advise you read the stickies on the top of the forum. Anyway, any questions or such you have, I'm here. Happy Adventuring.
To be the best, you must help each other become the best.

I don't always agree with how you word your points Fong, but you always have great contributions and this is no exception.
Personally I think this deserves it's own thread as this information is golden to new players as how to make gil in FFXI is not exactly obvious.
