An MMORPG with a Stroy

DelusiveDelusive Member Posts: 151

I am seeking out an MMO with a story behind it. I want the feel of a CO-OP RPG, just with more players. I am sick of the grind of most games, and the lack of story in the others. Sure, there are games with quests, loads of quests. Kill x number of mobs, clear out the dungeon, deliver x to so-and so. I want the quest I am working on to directly relate to the story. That may be difficult, but maybe 10 smaller quests that lead to the big story based quest, at least that way I have something to work for.

I also wouldn't mind a game where you choose your own abilities. I'm sick of gaining a level and a new ability. I want to choose any ability I want, or at least a few choices pertaining to my class. Also, choices through out the game would be nice. Maybe when talking to the NPC I get a choice of responces and based on my decision, the events ahead will unfold differently. Maybe I could have talked the information out of someone, or threatened which leads to a fight to the death, or by simply  a gift for gab, anything that is a choice.

Back to the point of the post, can anyone point me in the direction of a game with a story? I don't care if it is a single player PC game with CO-OP and Online play. I mainly want a game me and my wife can enjoy that doesn't leave us grinding or having to create large groups all the time. We currently play City of Heroes. We like the game in that we can act as a duo for the most part, but occasionlly team up with others to do some more difficult missions. But the game lacks a story in my opinion. Sure there are story arcs, but they are more like individual mini-stories. I want a story that unfolds peice by peice from beginning to end, one that we feel we help to unfold and that affects the outcome of that world. We tried Final Fantasy XI since the series is known for it's storytelling, but the controls were so far off that it was almost impossible for us to play...way beyond the standard. Maybe if played with a controller of some sort, but even then I hear it isn't the type of game for a duo group.

So, any suggestions?

Try FFXI again dude and this time play it for more then 3 hours, becuase thats how long it seems you have played it for.

the controls are weird to get used to but in the end i thought they were really good.

please install ffxi again and play it for atleast a week even if you dont like it at first becuase it is really really good and the only one with Cut scenes great storys.

other then that there is no mmo with a story, i suppose you could try WoW and try and get into the story and the lore.

    Lol

    Guild Wars?

Actually, many of the new games coming out do seem to have a storyline that actually plays a part in the game.

The notion that graphics, or anything else for that matter, are anywhere near as important as gameplay/fun is so utterly ridiculous that anyone who shares such a view should be placed in an asylum.

Guild wars is definitely one of the best and most immersive storylines ive seen in a MMORPG, and its all about co-op.

Yup, Guild Wars is probably the strongest when it comes to story, story attachment and a actual direction. I advise starting with the first. Then move on to Factions, Nightfall and then maybe EotN.

The only thing that really stands out to me to warn you about however is that the community can be childish and/or very vulgar. But if you're the type that can handle that then it's not a big deal.

Oh yeah, for me personally...character attachment is different than getting into the story. If you get the first Guild Wars, you will progress only a bit faster than your average MMO. You hit max cap playing casually rather quickly...I'd say like 2 weeks or so. Even shorter if you play the others first. Good thing about this is that the story line is involving and really doesn't get good till you are at max level. Bad thing for me about this is that now I have one of each character and don't care about any of them because I can go through the game so fast.

I think they know this also and is sure to be addressed in Guild Wars 2 which is being made as we speak.

In the end though it's imo a very fun experience especially when playing with your girlfriend or wife because actually, just the two of you can go through the entire pve side of the house on your own besides an elite mission or two.

In my opinion, Lotro is a better story-driven game than Guild Wars, and I'm not referring to the fact that Lotro is based off of a story, but rather has story-driven quests.

MMO games played or tested: EQ, DAoC, Archlord, Auto Assault, CoH, CoV, EQ2, EVE, Guild Wars, Hellgate: London, Linneage II, LOTRO, MxO, Planetside, SWG, Sword of the New World, Tabula Rasa, Vanguard, WWIIOL, WOW, Age of Conan

I agree with the above, Guild wars or LOTRO

Guild wars if you like PvP

    LOTRO if you like PVE
