I just ordered a new PC and a couple "computer geek" friends of mine said the 8800gt was pretty good. I didnt get the impression it was the second comming or anything but they said it would handle the games I am waiting on nicely.

The term computer geeks was thiers not mine and one of them makes his house payment as a "geek" of sorts.

Best bang for your buck card out there IMO.

Overall it has comparible performance to the expensive 8800GTX, at half the price.

Fantastic performance to list price ratio. Problem is that supply is lower than demand so they are somewhat hard to come by and selling for above MSRP.

    Take a look at:

    www23.tomshardware.com/graphics_2007.html?modelx=33&model1=740&model2=854&chart=303

That is a great little chart that lets you compare and contrast cards on different games with FPS meters and everything.  Great informative site.

If you want to spend less for a card that is on par with the 8800 GT you may want to consider the Radeon HD 3870.

Cheaper? Yes. Better? Do you sniff glue?

The GTS is not better than the GT, and the GT matches the GTX to a 5% difference.

Only reason to buy the more expensive 8800 series is if you have too much bloody money. The 880gt is the only way to go...it's better than the ATI stuff for the time being, but I think ATI is a little cheaper and is coming out with a better version of the 38 series soon.

with that said..people are charging retarded prices on the 8800gt's taking advantage of the fact that people that don't know expect them to cost as much as the gts and gtx, not to mention the lack of availability.

My suggestion is (if one is nearby) go to a compusa. I was there about 4 days ago and they had shelves full of BFG 8800gt's OC'd for $249. Best deal I've seen anywhere, including the internet.

    Good luck.
