why are we the way that we are?

hey all,

like a lot of you i have been gaming for a long time, prob not as long as some of you. i started with ultima online and then went to eq. I loved em both and have played almost every game since. The gaming world has changed a lot since then. We have lots of choices now and more coming out every day. Back in the days of  eq if i was stuck on a quest or just wanted to learn more about my class i would jump on the forums. it was a wealth of information. Players helping players succeed. Now when you check out the forums either here on mmorpg.com or on a fansite or even on the official site, it is just a knot of arguments. why this game is better?, or why i left this game, or why this game is horrible. It takes a lot of time to find any useful information through all this mess. I totally beleive in free speech but my question is why are us gamers so passionate about these games?

i have a buddy who is really really into golf,he puts more hours into golf each week than i put into gaming and i play prob more than i should. He pays monthly fees for a country club he is in. if it rains he might come over and hang out, but he doesnt freak all out that he cant play. If our servers go down for a day we freak out. i include my self in this i am not attacking anyone. what i dont understand is i frequent all the forums for the games that i play but i dont post often, but there are so many posts about what game is better and why a game sucks and i dont understand it? we have more choices than ever and no one is forced to play anything. it has been said time and time again in many posts but i strongly beleive if you dont like it dont play it but why do we need to bicker constantly about this? anyway i am rambling on and i am not wording properly what i really wanted to say, but basically i wanted to ask whay have all us gamers turned against each other?  it seems like all we do is fight and bicker over what game is better. i think a more beneficial appraoch is to find a game we like and post info and help on that game rather than waste time posting about games that we dont like. forums are losing what they were meant to be. A source of information about that specific game. ok sorry for bugging you guys, i hope you are all having fun!

signed...but it will never happen.  Fantasy worlds need trolls.

It has everything to do with with societal norm nowadays. When I was a kid, wed go outside build a fort, roughouse, play some sports etc etc. Video games were something you were rewarded with. Flash forward today, and youve got kids who EXPECT everything because its been given to them their enitre lives. (this goes back to their parents feeling like the baby boomer generation was too strict, and in fact  now kids are really undisciplined by comparison).

Of course there will be naysayers, trolls, and flamers I expect when I post this.  But that doesnt change the truth of the matter. The clientele here are mostly naive kids who havent learned the respect due to other people on principal alone.

To anyone 30+ In your life have you ever said the things that you see these kids on here saying to an adult when you were a kid? Oh freakin hell no you didnt, or if you did it was immediately followed by some bad results.  But the kids now think they have the right to say whatever they want, to whoever they want no matter how rude, deragatory, or just plain sick.

Nevermind 30, I'm only 24 and I wouldn't have come out with some of the stuff these kids come out with. There is a point that the community isn't what it used to be. Looking back just 5-10 years you can see the change. Raiding didn't used to be a job, if a raid got wiped you laughed about it even if you were pissed off and though "Oh well better luck next time." If you got killed in PvP you're opponent didn't gloat and /spit on you.

I'm not sure why exactly these things happen now to be honest.

Depends what forum you go to because if the forum says on the title "class name" then you'll be talking about the classes and if it says "tech help" then will be people talking about that. However in general forum chats then it'll be lot of different people with different opinions arguing about whts best for the future, so ofcorse not everyone will agree. However if your happy with the game then your not really going to bother going to the forums, so really they're used for people who are angry at the changes or have a problem.
