I've been a huge Warhammer nut for about 9 years now and will probably go for an RP server, simply because I think RP people are a bit more mature and will have less crazy WoW fan bois.
I may be wrong but I'm just stoked to finally get a chance to engage with the material.
Hopefully most of WoW gamers that will migrate onto WAR will realize the absolute joke that has become WoW general chat. This being said I would like to think better of the general public and sincerely wish that any RP servers created will have a mature following.
Unfortunately most of us know how the equation goes:
Normal Person + Audience + Anonymity = Complete Ass Hole
I picked open RvR / RP, though I figure it won't really matter as you don't really get RPers, you get the people who are trying to find a mature server but turn around and do the immature thing and jack up the RP servers.
I'll start out on an RP Open RVR server and learn the core game mechanics...and probably about 6 months down the road would be willing to give a FFA PVP server a try. (unless I could hook up with a good guild on a FFA server from the git go)

Depends on my friends. When we played Shadowbane, we were on Mourning (RP server). The politics and RP PvP was fun. Hopefully it will be the same.
Chances are, we'll either choose RP or Core. Some of them don't have the stomach for open RvR, so I doubt we would go that route (although I would love to do open rvr)

Actually... he's speaking in as if he were a Greenskin, so he is in fact Role Playing, hence, he said he and his friends were going to be on the RP (which equals Role Playing) server....
so.... yeah.... sorry Pheace, you just made yourself look pretty ... umm... yeah...
but ANYWHO, I'm probably going to roll on a standard server first to get a good "feel" for the game, but I know I'll be doing a LOT of PvP so... I'm sure I'll be making a toon on the Open RvR or RP RvR server as well.
It most certainly doesnt work with the system that has been implemented in WAR.
Think of it this way. You have races that are set up to fight each other...to take over each others lands and throw into the fact FFA pvp which means one thing, guilds on the same SIDE fighting eachother and no one would get anywhere. If they did it would be temporary alliances and backstabbing and trash talking.

It isn't FFA PvP in that respect. It is FFA in respect that the other side can attack you AT ANY TIME. No safe areas, ect.

Er...yes, exactly..... that's what FFA servers are all about...its your guild vs the world.... you trust no one but your closest friends and set any rules you want to engage other players. (and no, you don't just attack everyone else at whim)
Its an alternate rule set, certainly not for everyone, but a hella lot of fun.... great for role playing as well.....
I hope Mythic decides to one day implement such a server....

Its not like Mythic will force you to play FFA, so why would it matter if they had a server like this? I thought about how they could implement FFA as well. My guess is it would be like open rvr but people would have more freedom to just choose sides i.e. a human running within a chaos guild. Then perhaps there will be an option to choose with side or city you want to fight for. Who knows...
What I do know is this is a statement from Mark Jacobs,
However during the during beta we will be doing more polls, more posting and take the temperature of the players and if there is a lot of support for an Open RvR RP rule-set or there isn't as much support for core rule-set RP server, we'll make the appropriate changes. We want to give the players what they want, not what they all want. There are some players as you know who want an FFA server. Right now that's not in our plans. But maybe a year down the road, if players really wanted it, if there was support there and we could make ruleset adjustments to make it work, we would consider it.
But yes like an above poster mentioned, I made the poll more or less to gauge the opinion of players and get a simple idea of what players might play when WAR releases.
Originally posted by Roguewiz Originally posted by heerobya Originally posted by Roguewiz It isn't FFA PvP in that respect. It is FFA in respect that the other side can attack you AT ANY TIME. No safe areas, ect.
Yes, the Open RvR servers are that way exactly... the FFA option on the OP's Poll is meant to be different, as in anyone can attack anyone, regardless of race and faction. Mythic has made no confirmation or intentions of including this type of server, it's merely an option the poll to help gauge opinion. Personally, FFA wouldn't bother me. Simply put, even your own side has someone that is annoying you and needs to be "taught a lesson". The way I suggested or the way it actually is, either way would work for me.
Regardless of whether it would or wouldnt bother me....it doesnt FIT into the current system.
Unless however they made One server like what was on the Mordred Server of DAOC.
Take the trash talking out of FFA pvp, and the biggest thing that bothers is the fact that pvp isnt STRUCTURED enough imo to be consistent and enjoyable. When I want to pvp I want a fair fight. Anyone can leave the "real ideas" of war back in reality. I play games to be challenged and to beat THINKING people. Zerging or being zerged removes any type of skill.
For me its like basketball. When I go play basketball we go to a court and play five on five. When I show up, with a ball in my hand, 45 guys dont rush me for it, steal it and dunk the ball.
For the pvp to be enjoyable there has to be an area to pvp at, whether its battlegrounds of WoW or huge RvR like that in DAOC. Everyone there was there for one reason...TO PVP.
Regardless of whether it would or wouldnt bother me....it doesnt FIT into the current system. Unless however they made One server like what was on the Mordred Server of DAOC. I think that is the whole point, making a seperate server ruleset. Similar to Mordred and Andred.

Anyone can leave the "real ideas" of war back in reality. I play games to be challenged and to beat THINKING people. Zerging or being zerged removes any type of skill. The fact that it isn't prearranged and structured is what makes it enjoyable for many people. The idea that playing in a virtual "wild west" is very appealing to me whether it be Open RvR or FFA. This dynamic also challenges you, it can challenge and train your awareness in the game and better your reaction and reflexes to sudden dangers. The best pvpers in my opinion are the ones who keep their eyes open at all times and can assess immediate threats and respond accurately. Playing in Open RvR and FFA keeps these abilities always at their peak. You don't get to slack. If you slack off, you die. So I find these types of servers far more challenging than normal servers. Zerg vs. Zerg takes skill too but being zerged is just an unfortunate circumstance. Learning to survive a zerg takes some skill.
For me its like basketball.
When I go play basketball we go to a court and play five on five.
When I show up, with a ball in my hand, 45 guys dont rush me for it, steal it and dunk the ball. So basically you want to play prearranged and restricted pvp. You will always have scenarios in the game which are similar to WoW battlegrounds.
For the pvp to be enjoyable there has to be an area to pvp at, whether its battlegrounds of WoW or huge RvR like that in DAOC. Everyone there was there for one reason...TO PVP. WAR is everywhere!!!!
I think it is indeed a question on whether or not an "open RvR" is, or isn't, for someone. Just because 1 person doesn't like it, doesn't mean it won't work. If done properly, it can work just fine. Even an alliance have their disagreements. Do you think the US gets along with all its allies all the time? We have our differences and disagreements. Now, it doesn't necessarily mean we will go to war over it, but the idea is still there.
You can also look at it from this standpoint, even if you are a part of an alliance, you still have various power structures within said alliance. All vying for power over the alliance.
So yes, a open RvR DOES fit into their system. However, due to the fact that it is indeed "not for everyone", a ruleset like that won't go beyond 1 or MAYBE 2 servers. (Which sucks because <insert random alliance tard> just kill stealed your mob or wont leave you alone. What could be more fun that shoving your sword up his....you get the idea )

Defintitely Open RvR. I played on a normal server in WoW and still to this day I regret it. If I only hadn't listened to my carebear friend...
PvP in WoW on PvP servers was different... it was ALL about who had the highest level, or more of the higher level players. i.e. ganking and griefing galor.
You didn't miss much...
Anywho, in response to the OP's last posting and this arguement for/against FFA in WAR...
There really is no "point" in having a FFA server because there are the Open RvR servers.
This is how it works.
Core server- PvE areas and PvP areas in each zone. No PvP in the PvE zones unless you "flag" yourself for pvp and the opposing team is brave/stupid enough to venture into your sides pve area, because every NPC on your factions side will attack them.
Open RvR server - You are always flagged for PvP, on your factions PvE area the NPCs will still attack enemy players, but you are always flagged so outside of cities you are always fair game.
If the open RvR PvP server action isn't enough PvP for you that you feel you need to battle with your brethren.. well... I just don't get it.
Add the fact that there will be no high level ganking due to chicken/chaos chicken mechanics, and jaded PvPer's like myself rejoice!
PvP in WoW on PvP servers was different... it was ALL about who had the highest level, or more of the higher level players. i.e. ganking and griefing galor. That was not my experience on WoW PvP servers but to each their own. I don't think Open RvR will be gank or grief free like you might be envisioning it to be. Last I heard it was just the newbie areas that will be safe. I would think those areas to be very small. You didn't miss much... Anywho, in response to the OP's last posting and this arguement for/against FFA in WAR... It was more or less an opinion in response to anothers posters comment on how unrestricted (open rvr and FFA) pvp was less challenging than balanced prearranged pvp. There really is no "point" in having a FFA server because there are the Open RvR servers. Open RvR is different than Open PvP. Even if they made newbie areas safe in an FFA server you would still be prone to attack by EVERYONE, not just opposing armies (factions). That is a HUGE difference. Personally I would most likely still play on an Open RvR/RP server, but the option to choose FFA would be nice for an added option later.
FFA would be for people who are not so much focused on the politics and story of the game, but more for the actual gameplay and pvp interaction. I am not defending or opposing FFA, but I do have a respect for it. Like I said even if they do add this server type what is the big deal? You are not going to be pigeon holed into playing on that server. The more options of server types the better imo. Add the fact that there will be no high level ganking due to chicken/chaos chicken mechanics, and jaded PvPer's like myself rejoice! I haven't looked into this thourougly, but I think that this is for the newbie areas. Either way I do like this implement. However either way I can adapt. Adaptation is a big key to playing good pvp as well.

There's no way the community in this game is going to be any different than in WoW in my opinion ^^
When I don't want to listen to the chat in a certain channel I just disable it.
Actually, I disable most chat channels in any MMO game that I play since WoW was released.
Say, Tell, Guild, Group. That's all you need.
I vote for Open RVR RP.
