I just bought the game and now patching it. Are there melee fighters in the game? I saw unarmed combat skill but not sure how high one can train in it and if it is worth it.
From your guys experiance how well do melee fighters/skills do in PvE and PvP?
thx

2 classes get uber melee fighting skills after level 30: Guardian and the Spy. Yes, they are uber... insanely uber and the guardian gets melee but his melee weapon is capable of firing off ranged shots if he wants to use it ranged. But, the melee damage is far superior to the ranged damage. Very cool graphics on the melee weapons too... like a light saber but double-sided and the sounds that the weapons make are cool too... probably a bad comparison but that should answer your questions.
Ok. This post is a "bit" misleading. The Spy does some "insanely uber" damage, but the guardian does not. It can do very high damage, 3k+ per hit at lvl30, but its main deal is its supposed tanking ability with its reflection skill. the staves Melee damage is also not better than the ranged damage, most staves have a ranged damage that beats the melee by about 300+ hp. They are a great class, just now how the previous poster stated. The Staves are not double sided light sabres.
But to answer your original question. There are no real hand-to-hand options, upping that skill just ups the melee damage you will do with a weapon in your hand.

Thanks for cleaning up my post. I don't have a guardian or a spy so I didn't know the details on that stuff.
I had no other intention but to roll a sniper but when I cloned @ 29.9 I made a spy and I was pleasantly surprised. Spies SHRED mobs. They're a bit squishy as far as taking damage but I swear my xp bonus is painted @ 250% sometimes for very long spans during assault/defense and I rack up some mad xp. (just don't backstab linkers and too close to a mob inside of a shield drone)
At lvl 27 I PVP'd a lvl 30 spy. All he needed to do was use his net gun to root me and then in about 2-3 seconds he went melee on me and killed me while I was spamming my healing tool. I tried to stun him with my 5 second stun and tried to outheal his damage (I'm a Biotech, a healing class) and no luck at all.. no chance.. just sit there and die. Net+backstab = instant death for all but a guardian at least... I can't think of any defensive strategy until I hit 30 and get my invulnerability to damage

Some of my clannies, get together and duel 45-50 to just learn more about the game, damage mitigation, etc etc. Right now the difference between a spy hitting a guardian in comparrison to hitting any other class is a couple of more swings. ie: a spy can dish out WAY more than you can defend against. All you can really do is keep them rooted as best you can and try to kill em before they can get you in range of their swords. To OP.
I got hand to hand skill for my demo, and i use it alot.
But skill specs are wrong about the knock back %. either that or there is another factor involved.
