Not many people like Micro-transaction (except for 12 year olds who don't own credit cards) simply because although the game is free, it all comes down to who has the msot cash, or who iswilling to spend the most money on in-game items. A monthly makes sense. It is the same price for everyone and advancement in the game is instead based on skill and time put into it.
Sure, farming and selling of in-game items is going on so it's happening anyway but that shouldn't matter as long as Jumpgate is designed to be a game where things you buy can only take you so far.
Most likely this game wont be worth the monthly sub,id say go with the ingame item mall.I personaly would prefer to play freelancer (it is mmorpgish online) and there are alot of good mods for it.

I like the Free to play model, as long as the game shop items wouldn't be necessary to enjoy the game. I have yet to find a free to play game that doesn't suck.
If a "free to play" game were fun... I'd most certainly spend money in a well thought out in game shop.
Regardless of the payment plan ... EVERY game should offer a free trial.
If a game won't offer a free trial I assume they are hiding something.
I'm also finding myself reluctant to pay for a client.
Adding my support for the monthly payment option. The commitment of a monthly payment is just enough to keep people away from the game that just want to grief people. You will always get some, but mostly I have had little problems with games that charged monthly.

I agree with the free trial statement, but not the rest. When a game DOESN'T charge a monthly fee, I get this feeling that even the company that created it knows it sucks.
That's not true with the case of a few good free MMORPGs like Silkroad, Space Cowboy, Rappelz and Perfect World.
True, a fee gives the game a better chance to be good. But when a company wants a fee they usually are just lazy and what to suck as much money from the users as possible.
The items in the Rappelz cash shops are a joke. You dont need the items at all to advance and I would like to see JumpGate with a similar system
Well, no. Advertising is ok in a game as long as it fits the content. No adverts for electronics in a fantasy setting for example, but in a sci-fi game it would be ok if I was walking on a station and saw a digital screen advertising a spaceship built by Sony galactic or whatever.
I have to go with a pure monthly pay schedule. Option to purchase future months in advance (at a slight discount per month) would be even better (ie: 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, 1 year). The main advantage of being able to get several months subscription at once is that the developers will have invested capital available to them to keep things running.
I honestly do not have any idea what this "mall items" thing I keep hearing is all about, but I already know I do not like the sound of it. The idea of in game advertising (contemporary real life products being "sold" to players in a non contemporary imaginary world) is to be frank.... disgusting. An excellent example is the use of Dell XPS PC's in Tabula Rasa. Considering the nature of that game universe, that sort of advertising is simply out of place and uncalled for. I play a game as an entertaining escape from normal life. I do not want products to be "sold" to me. If I did, I could simply watch TV, or do on the internet (which at one time had no ads on it as well).
Just keep things simple with a monthly fee. the system works, so please stop trying to reinvent the wheel.
As for the free trial, I agree that a free trial in NEEDED. This is an age in which developers and publishers push forward unfinished projects.... essentially making players PAY to play a Beta product, all in the name of having more quickly generated income. I for one will not touch a game any more unless I have played a trial or demo of some sort first, and I am satisfied that it has been developed to a significant level.
As for the client itself, I can see one of two ways to release it. 1)Pay for client, but offer a months free service (two if you are really bold and support your product), or 2) Free client with a week trial (10-15 is not needed for a trial. 7 days is more than enough. Most will have made up their minds either way after 1 hour), and pay after that.
Finally this goes out to the gamers out there. Most notibly those who seem to want everything for free. Grow up and get with the program. The purpose of business is to make a profit. That does not mean they are trying to "take all the money they can" as some of you put it. While some companies do this through exaustively high profit margins (look at gas prices), most make a modest return. Profitability is the corprate determining factor of "success" or "failure". If no profit is being made (or too little to justify the work being done...ie: someone paying you 5 cents to drive 100 miles to deliver something in unacceptable [the cost is greater than the benefit]) then the game servers will simply shut down and that will be that. If however they actually see a return (that is to say they have made back their initial investment, are able to pay for current services like servers, support, etc, and are finally MAKING money) you can expect improvements to go on for as long as that income is generated.
By wanting everything for free all you are doing is ensuring that nothing gets done, no new content gets made, and everything simply goes poof. It's synonymous with someone who wants to eat food, but being unwilling to pay for or grow their own. These people are parasites and they are a drain on society.

That's probably the best way I have seen it stated. If you can't budget your life around $10-$15 a month, or convince your parents (if you are one of the little ones) that you could earn the right to have them pay for your play, then sorry. That's your problem and not anyone elses.
A monthly payment plan works. Why mess with stuff like advertisements and microtransactions when you have a working option?
I'd like a lifetime fee. Like what they did with LoTR and HellGate London
A lifetime fee is sudden death for a game. This kind of option usually equels something like two years of monthly subs. After that time the game ceases to make a profit and will go offline, or the devs leave the servers ticking over and let them die wth no new content, patches, and customer support.
Look, everyone wants a good deal but can we all agree we want a good game more than we want a bargain? I am happy to pay $15 a month for JGE, more than happy. MMOs in my experiance have saved me money in the long term. When playing an MMO I tend not to buy any other games, and with xbox360 games priced between £30-£40 ($60-$80) that is a HGE saving when you realise I would buy at least 1 and often 2 games a month. Not only that, I have often added a 3rd game to that tally for the PC, which are cheaper I admit, but not when added to my console games.
Player donations is a joke option, right? Not many people like Micro-transaction (except for 12 year olds who don't own credit cards) simply because although the game is free, it all comes down to who has the msot cash, or who iswilling to spend the most money on in-game items. I haven't played a game with MT yet, so I don't know how they work in practice. But I don't see why " it all comes down to who has the msot cash, or who iswilling to spend the most money on in-game items" is any worse than it coming down to who has the most time to play or who is willing to sit in game for 12+ hours a day.
Being a casual gamer, with maybe 4-6 hours a week to play, I'm usually at a disadvantage to those without jobs/responsibilities/ family/school/other time eaters. MTs intrigue me in that I could obtain game items I might not otherwise have the time to acquire. No, I don't want my extra cash to give me an advantage, any more than "your" extra free time should give you one.
I would prefer a hybrid system, where neither approach has a decided advantage over the other.
monthly payments hands down. Its a small developer and unless we want some cheap piece of Korean like crap spewed out we need to make it profitable for them. I think this game is just fine if it has a niche following. The group will tend to stick around for the very long term and the numbers should stay consistent. JGE does not need hordes of players and its a good way to stop gold sellers to. No free trial either. If you are serious about SCI-FI then you will just get this game regardless.
I like a monthly fee, you are basically investing in a game you believe in, if the game changes into one you do not wish to play you vote your disapproval by cancelling. Malled or micro transaction games do not have this investment, if you don't play because the game is bad there is little to do but bitch about it in the forums. How many have signed up, downloaded and installed a F2P game only to uninstall it after 3 days without a second thought. To many F2P games are just disposable MMOs. This is not to say every P2P game is a gem, but they are usually more solid and well put together. If JGE can provide me a good sci-fi gaming experience I will be happy to pay a fee for it, especially since there are so few sci-fi MMOs out there.
By the way... a pole is something you attach a sign to. This is a poll, not a pole...
Sorry, just a pet peeve.... people really need to learn how to spell and which words are the correct ones.
If English isn't your native language please disregard
As to the poll itself? Monthly fee is the best way to deal with things. I detest any system that gives folks with lots of money to spend an unfair advantage over those who don't. Donations isn't a real option for a commercial grade game, tbqh and addware is just horrid, nor does it bring in enough revenue to properly support the game.

If this game is similar to the original, then I have no problems with the monthly subscription fee. Jumpgate just flat out rocks. Also the Jumpgate community isn't as small as you think, this game is going to be a huge success.

i have nothing against monthly paiment if game is worth it...alot of games arent (like Tabula Rasa)...
If game is worth 30Euros a month i would pay 30E a month...and im sure everyone else would too....

Would you like some cheese with that whine?
If the game is very good I dont mind Montly payment I never mind paying for a game, it all comes down to playability and content.
Monthly payment, most definitely. None of that item mall bull.

Can I vote 10 times for player donations so I don't have to pay?
how did you figure that out?
My cool sig: Turrets suck.
Monthly payment, for sure!

I don't care...whatever gets us the best game. If it is actually a fun game I will spend $15/mo to play or $15 in item malls.
