So, I've been playing MMOs for a long time now (Well, a decent amount of time), my first being FFXI about 5 years ago. I played for a few months, loved the new world of actual content of actual P2P MMOs that had been opened up to me, but was extremely put off by the necessity of a group for everything past lvl 10,  and the absolutely unforgiving death penalties.

After that, I hopped around on free trials and betas, playing EQ, GW, AO, MxO, CoH, etc., and eventually EQ2 and WoW. Then, after my friend expressed a lot of interest in WoW after its launch, and was already well-established in the game, I caved in, and bought it (which, in retrospect was a good idea, as my original plan was to wait for Dark and Light, which if I had, I would not be typing this right now, but rather sitting in a padded room). That started my 3 year, on-and-off love affair with the game. I played, I quit, I came back, rinse, repeat.

I just recently came back about a month ago, but rather than get sucked in like I normally did, I was already disinterested a few days after re-activating, and that was when I realized that my happy times in WoW were officially over. And now, here I am, looking for a new game to keep me amused in my free time, because I have no newer consoles, thus no new games, my PC is lacking behind too much to really play any of the new non-MMO games.

I'm looking for a game that has a good, accepting, and loving community. I want something that snags you in almost right away, because if I don't get that feeling, I usually give up. I want a game with a decent amount of end-game options, I prefer PvE, but I like PvP almost as much, and if it has grand-scale PvP, then I enjoy it more than PvE.

I've played DAoC and LOTRO, and felt that I might give them a second chance, I had both on free trials. I felt that LOTRO really had me hooked at the beginning, and I very much liked it, however towards the end of the trial, it slowed considerably, and I heard that there is little to no end-game content. DAoC, I tried, I played a Bonedancer, but I didn't like the world as it felt a tad depressing and bland in a lot of areas, however I heard that the end-game RvR is one of the most enjoyable experiences in MMOs to date.

I've also had my eye on Tabula Rasa, but that camp seems rather unhappy as well.

Anyways, I really need a new MMOG, because I'm really bored these days, I live out in the middle of nowhere, and I need something to do (and at this point, it seems my only alternative is to wait on my new forbidden fruit; Warhammer). Any recommendations?

EDIT: And don't say EVE, I detest that game.

Myself, i have been hanging on with SWG. Tried most of the trials out there and nothing really grabs me. I am waiting for PotBS to come out in January. only thing that has perked my interest in a long while. If that fails me.. no games for me till Spore I guess.

I don't know why MMORPGs have to be about "end game" to most people. I wish game designers would get away from making "end games" and concentrate on all levels of the game. The game at a point should start to slow considerably around a certain level probably half way to the almighty finish line to the point you are barely moving in levels so people will stop looking for that stopping point. These are online persistant worlds we don't need finish lines. About at that point dungeons should start being more plentiful and as well as other big baddies should be floating around at different levels. Do we need a "end level"? Are you not still spending time in the game either way, why not gain a level a month while you do your "end game" stuff and the devs could keep adding more and more content as you go at a month a level speed or whatever it should be.  I think the instant gratification of WoW is a cheap worthless thrill that wears off quick. Having X gear or X level means nothing, it isn't an accomplishment. When in EQ it may have taken longer or was more difficult to obtain that neat item but once you had it, you felt an accomplishment. EQ could really hold you alot longer than WoW, that is why you play for a little while in WoW and get bored and then come back to see if it can grab you again for a few months, it wasn't a world like EQ.

WoW pushed the concept of "why even have leveling, just get to the end" even further. I am starting to think anymore with the recent change to WoW that a read they basically increased leveling so fast now it is trivial. Why not just go one step further and take out any game progression of leveling? Just do away with it, if it is such a pain or doesn't deserve anytime spent doing it. That is what WoW should have done since they don't believe that part of the game is "part of the game" anyhow. The next big MMORPG after WoW will probably have no levels you just log in and make a raid and start collecting equipment.

While I agree that a game should be enjoyable all the way through, (if not, then why is it a game?) realistically, you get to the end. If there is nothing at the end, then what the hell was the point? At least if the beginning is grueling, at least there was a reason for getting it done, though I don't necessarily agree with that idea, either.

I completely agree with you, however, I'm being realistic, as I think MMOs as a genre have defined themselves in such a manner.

EDIT: Though, I'm still gameless in the long run.

Yeah, but one big hurdle I could never get over with EVE was the whole lack of avatar thing. I like thinking my character as a person, and not as a ship, and I realize they just added an update where you can kind of walk around a little in avatar mode, it just seems a bit tact on.

That, and mining tested my sanity at every turn.

I tried TR, and could already tell that it wouldn't hold my interest very long.

What about EQ2? That's next on my "games to try" list.

    Hi Murais!

Well I played WoW aswell for around 2 years now....left and came back, etc...but now I have given up, I was healing last week in Kara and I just lost all the fun..and it hasnt come back, so I stopped...good that my subscription runs out in a few days aswell.

I will probably play it when the new expansion comes out to try out the new class and some other things.....maybe :P

Annyyywaayy..I have been playing various trials and other games so far

    :

EQ2: THe grpahics, animations ..the gameplay...all a bit odd and outdated to me. I did like the music though . Not my cup of tea :S

EVE: Played this before WoW and during WoW as well but it just doesnt catch me , flying space all the time and not having an avatar and a lush environment is a huge turnoff....as well as the rather dry gameplay and economy, overly serious and uniteresting politics and alliances

LOTRO: Playing this a little bit each day.....while I think it had potential ( lovely looks and immersion) the sad thing is that the animations of characters, the little customization and the very slow  action is  making me split with the game :

RFOnline: Tried the tutorial..didnt like the controls and looks, and I found the characters a little too scanditly clothed ( but thats just me) ..so I stopped that

Vanguard: Wow..this game really absorbs a lot of pc resources.....aaaand...its deserted :( IT really feels like a game that was left by the developers halfway

SWG: Downloading the trial right now....I heard a lot of bad things about it..I will see :)

And I am looking forward to WAR, hope I get into BETA...not going to play Ageof Conan I think

At the moment I am little tired and bored with MMO's....just looking for that MR/Mrs Right, gamewise, just cant find it  anywhere

OHw...and try this web based game too...its simple and rather ok  www.darkthrone.com

Hope we can keep the chat going :)

    Greets

Have you thought of trying The Saga of Ryzom? It's a sandbox game and it's really amazing. The world captivates you right from the beginning imho.

I thought of it, played it during beta and didn't like it much, but I've heard a lot of good things about it since then, but my only reservation about it is that I've heard that its entire existence is literally hanging by a thread, and if I bought the game, and started paying for it, etc., I would be really angry to find it canceled a month down the road.

As for books, that's what I'm doing now, I've been reading the Gotrek & Felix Warhammer books, I've already read R.A. Salvatore, he's one of my favorite writers, and I haven't had the cash to go pick up the Wheel of Time books. I enjoy reading, but I like a game to the side.

I'll try EQ2 (downloading the trial now), if that doesn't grab me, I'll try Ryzom, and if not Ryzom, I'll hope a 360 is under my tree for the holidays until Spore and Warhammer come along and I'm entertained again.

Thanks for the info guys, I was hoping for a little more info, but I'm satisfied with this, I think I have a plan now.

Apparently there's hope on the horizon and another company is planning on buying the game from what I saw on the Ryzom forums. I most certainly hope they do as it's an awesome game that really deserves more attention than it gets.

Perhaps, but the forums here, and on the official website look neither hopeful nor promising.

well since you say you havnt played eq2 i think you really shoudl give it a go.

the free trial unfortunately is fairly crap and does an aweful job of selling the game to new comers.

But anyway eq2 is pve based, with 80 levels of content (up from 50 originally), its got incredible depth, you can group or solo up to max level with both being fairly viable if you can get into a big guild, if you loved wow you should in theory love this, the game will play on most pcs these days.

The end game is fairly solely raiding, there are a lot of casula raiding guilds but theres also 6 man content. There is no pvp on the standard servers but there are pvp servers, where its a FFA affair.
