This was already known. Posted yesterday.

Yes, this is widely known now. Unfortunatly the topic is sure to become a vehicle for flames. If you want to make such a thread, at least do it on the WoW forums

Nah, I can imagine 9 Million. Including of course people with 2 or more accounts and the good number of Gold-Farmers in the game. ^_^

But is that true? Because Blizzard is such a gigantic success. does that mean smaller companies must fail?

I think that the OP meant is that of all the over hyped , over exaggerate , over promised and poorly delievered  and executed MMO's that have come in the past couple of years , be they from big or little companies pales in comparison to Blizzard's platform. Talk about vision. They made a game that will play pretty much on any pc that's been out on the market for the past 5 years.

Which is why the graphics are abysmal... Let me add that I've been playing WoW since launch and only decided to take a break about a month ago. I just wish that Blizzard would add better looking shadows and lighting for users who have a machine that can handle it.  Maybe WotLK will? I'm counting on it. Because, as of right now, WoW looks no better than a Dreamcast game...

I wish there was more competition for WoW; I'm hoping that WAR will be a point of contention for Blizzard.

I really hate it when people say that their numbers are crap.  They actually detail what a subscriber is, and usually are more strict detailing a player than a lot of other games claim (any asian mmo...).

  • Alright... one of the cool things about reading stories from different sources... the NY Post article seems to have something extra, something, intresting that none of the other news sources picked up on:

Here is the online version, same print as the paper version:

    http://www.nypost.com/seven/12032007/business/vivendi_plays_hero_in_18_9b_activision_d_247200.htm

""""" fold its own Vivendi Games unit into the Santa Monica, Calif.-based video game publisher. """"

Maybe I'm reading too much into it? Maybe I just have a more cautious demeanor, but when one "folds" it means one gives up their dominance. For example, when a worker folds into his boss. I get the impression the former Blizzard company, is taking a backseat to the former Activision company, which is now riding shotgun. And Jean of course is in the driver's seat.

Like a huge company like Blizzard can get away with lying about something like that..

I bet those account holders have on average 4 accounts so that they can solo party. Which is why i belive the 9 million number. After all if you know where to look you can find both posts that show where to get the macros to make the co-ordination possable. and the posts where people say they have severall accounts.

Not saying its a bad game its just that i feel that this is realisticaly how WoW gets such a Active sub number.

I personally don't know any people that have more than 2 accounts and only a handful that actually have 2.

IF we're going that way the real numbers you should be doubting is DaoC where having 2-3 accounts at least was the norm.

Following that line comparing any numbers would become futile.

Given what Blizzard has lined out I think their numbers are probably the most honest I've ever seen.

Does that refute that most of the people from that number are probably chinese or that blizzard's numbers in US or EU have gone stagnant? Not at all though there's no direct proof of it either.

I see a lot of people who simple are a hell of a lot less active, they log in less than they used to do, but they may still be subscribers (Active subscriber) and thus be counted, which makes sense yet you still see less people. (my server is very active btw, on all the levels ^^)

I'm assuming they are talking about the games division of Vivendi, not Blizzard. Vivendi has it's own games division which Blizzard is a part of, but it's more than just Blizzard.  As has been said many times over already by Blizzard, there's no change for Blizzard other then some more marketing muscle from Activision.

    Straight off the Blizzard website:

    December 2, 2007

Blizzard to Join Forces With Activision

We're pleased to announce that along with the other companies that make up Vivendi Games, we are merging with Activision to form a new global entertainment organization called Activision Blizzard (pending shareholder and regulatory approval). Similar to our previous arrangement, Blizzard Entertainment will now operate as a division of this new organization.
There will be no changes to our games, our websites, our personnel, or our day-to-day operations as a result of the deal. However, this combining of resources will benefit all of the companies involved and will further strengthen Blizzard's ability to continue delivering high-quality content for our players around the world for many years to come. To learn more about this exciting new development, please read our Activision Blizzard FAQ.

I can believe 9million. 7million+ are china/korea/japan probly.  With the largest majority in China due to the agreement with The9. Can't go wrong with the game being given out for free along with 2 cents on the hour to play.

WoW cacks all over the 'competition' in terms of PvE. It won't be until the upcoming games attack WoW on the PvP front that we see any assault on WoW's dominance of the market. We need high profile games with an emphasis on PvP(WoW's BIG weak spot) to start seeing any erosion of WoW's player numbers.

I am in the finance Industry, and  what i know is this:

WOW has 2.4 million US, 3.2 European and the rest are in asian subscribers.

  • emperorvlemperorvl Member Posts: 103

    Not true,

It is nearly impossible to break ppl out of the "wow" trance.  They've invested so much time to get the lootz that when you try to get em to beta test or even look at screen shots they drool and mention something about gruul or kara and you don't hear from them again for weeks.

    haha

    blizzard has duped em all!

    Almost right =D

In march 2007 WoW had almost 4 million western subs (EU+US) so i would say its closr to 3 million today with the 6 million in china. total of 9 million world wide.

I'm thinking the 2nd estimate is more accurate than the first...... but both are just guesses because Blizzard hasn't really broken them down this way recently, and they're the only ones who really know.

Why do so many people get hung up on the number of subscriptions?  Bottom line is that WoW is the MMO leader, and that's not because of luck.   They know how to run a business and they know how to run an MMO.  Quality first.

Vivendi disclosed their financial statement to SEC ending november 2007.

Wow has now 9.3 confirmed subscribers. They will hit 10 million soon.
