it can't be just me that feels really weird when you can't jump in a game. I'd rather have people bunny hopping all over the place than being stuck to the ground. You can do an emote of /jump so why not just allow people to jump! Might sound weird but no jumping in Guild Wars made me not play. Oh and the fact that everything outside of towns is instanced. Good thing PotBS is like that.....crap wait nm . I want to be a pirate that can jump with my pegleg and not be stuck instanced sitting around town spamming LFC (Crew). How aboot you?

I can understand (from a design perspective) why developers would not like jumping.
It adds a whole new level of complexity to design in that it can potentially add a whole lot of new potential 'access points' to any area. You must also account for a whole lot of new objects a character can jump on.
That said, if you factor it in from the beginning it can be done.
In MMOs and online games there is also the difficulty that 'jumping' is used by some players to make their avatar difficult to target / hit (gamey). Still, that could be countered too with a little design work.
In PotBS (which I have not played yet) I understand the character has 'balance'?
Okay, so use that to limit the gamey bunny hopping...
If you jump you lose some balance (maybe a set amount plus a random amount which allows for a bad landing) and if you jump a second time the result is squared... a third time and the result is squared again...
So, making more than two jumps in a row is probably going to go badly.
Nothing says irony like spelling ideot wrong.
From a design perspective I understand it but I also don't like it. I will go you one further:
Almost 11 years ago a game went into development, called EverQuest.
In this game you could swim in, under and through water
you could jump
you could fish
you could do almost anything you wanted (almost).....
Since then many other MMORPG's come out and a stunning number
do not allow you to swim or allow you to swim but not go under the water...
do not allow you to fish
do not allow you to jump
hell some even don't allow you to walk...
These are just a few of my least favorite things about so-called "modern" MMO's.

I missed jumping at first, but truth to tell after playing it awhile, I dont even notice I cant anymore.

Mmmm... it's not that I need to be able to jump. It's that it's a missing feature that a truely finished MMORPG should have, in my opinion. As is swimming. I mean... theres beaches all over the place but you can't even get your feet wet.
It's all about the immersion. If there's a gameplay feature that would enhance immersion, it should be in. Jumping, fishing and swimming are parts of any MMORPG that truely enhance your feel of being in another world rather than 'just visiting'.
"A ship-of-war is the best ambassador." - Oliver Cromwell
I agree, just kills the immersion. One a side note, the avatar combat is so bad in POTBS that you really don't miss it.
Hmm... you can't jump in PotBS? Well, OP, you're not the only one, I like jumping in games so much that I will definitely not play this one. Used to drive me crazy in games like L2 or GW's not to be able to jump.....
And its not necessarily for the combat aspects of jumping.... rather...if I'm running across the game world and I come across a rock, or a fence, I should be able to jump over it. Or if I come to a cliff edge, I should be able to jump off.... its a simple mechanic...heck, even WOW has it...
and hell, when I'm standing around LFG or waiting for a raid to start.... jumping keeps me amused.
I tolerate this in EVE, because I don't have an avatar, but I sure hope when they give them to us the darn things can jump....(though might not really be necessary in that game)

MMM a bit of an over-exaggeration. AVCombat isn't THAT bad. It's not awesome but it's not bad either. Certainly not nearly as bad as some people make it out to be. I really like the mechanics of it. The feel is a bit wonky and 'jerky' though. They need to refine the animations and smooth it out a bit. But the combat aspect of AVCombat actually works pretty well.

Nonsense! Of course it will be necessary! How else will I force you, at gunpoint, to jump out the airlock???

When you play a game you do so to immerse yourself into another world. As cheesy as that sounds, the ONLY reason I play online games is to live another life, to a small degree. Having somewhat unrealistic restrictions like no jumping/swimming etc ruin that reality, and then i'm just wasting time.
It's odd how a feature that really has no bearing on your character can really turn so many people off to a game. And I agree 100%. Not adding jumping is retarded. Games on the atari had avatars jumping. Surely, it not that difficult.
I know it sounds crazy, but I love jumping.

Well said. Alas to those younger gamers!
It has been a descend loosing complexity for many years!
I recall in Ultima VII I really had seen the summit of what players can do in a RPG, and since then all RPGs have been less than their greater predecessors. In Ultima VII you could sow and reap, grind the grain to flour, mix flour with water to dough, bake it to bread in an oven and feed it to your party. Todays games are tiny EPIGONES of the grandeur games used to have once. Alas.
Most younger players now even cry when they have more than 2 skill trees to chose from, because its too much for them. Gawd, I still have a lot of my many hand drawn maps on chequered paper, heh. No automap back then. Ok, but I even I am glad we HAVE automap today.
