Mysearch Toolbar.... of doom

methane47methane47 Member UncommonPosts: 3,694

Ok here's the deal I downloaded and installed MSN Messenger Plus 3 and MySearch Toolbar piggy backed onto my computer.. Now this thing has taken some control of Internet Explorer and I hate that.. So I tried running Spy Busters but they cant find it... there is no uninstall for it either.. I deleted a bunch of cookies and files related to the toolbar that were hiding on my computer but IT STILL pops up every now and then...  And Uninstalling Plus 3 does not take the toolbar away either...

Please MMORPG-edi Masters show me the way to the light.. And tell me how to get this tish off my computer...

Go to www.download.com and download Adaware 6 and Spybot-Seach and destroy.  if they can't find it, next to nothing will.

Also, find an ASO (advanced system optimizer) program there as well, because it will come with a registry cleaner and defragger, and that may be part of the problem.

Also, have you checked Add/Remove Programs?  Sometimes a program doesn't have an uninstall but can be removed that way.

AHH! Run away from the monster! He's going to eat us!

You might also try going to view > toolbars and seeing if it is there with a check next to it. If so, uncheck it.

I really wish I could say I haven't done these... But yes I have.. I have HAD SpyBot and Adaware for like a year now.. and Both of them come up clean on every run... And the add/remove program in the Control panel was the first place I looked.. Because I've gotten rid of older versions of MySearch by doing this.. but no it isn't there.... I haven't tried that ASA thing.. But I do have System Mechanic which also cleans up registry and memory defragmentors and all that.. I downloaded Avant Antivirus a few days ago after hearing about it from the Admins but that doesn't pick it up as a virus or trojan either...

    Any other bright ideas?image

I have been having the same problem, found a solution...

Avast and Ad-Aware indeed do not detect it, and it is indeed not in the add/remove programs, so after a bit of research I found something that does detect it and does get rid of it...

It also found quite a few other things that Ad-Aware missed...

Anyway, it's called Spysweeper, can get it HERE

Free download but you seem to have to subscribe to get it updated with new software fingerprints and such. Oh well, not for me, definitely handy for solving the current problem tho.

    Interesting....

I got Messenger Plus 3....but without the MySearch Toolbar thingy.

They usually ask if you wish to install their sponsor....my reply is always NO.

I'm not sure how you would find it.......try restoring your comp back to the point before you downloaded MSP3?? That sometimes works.

Spysweeper definitely got rid of it, I've had it for a while now, but I never use IE, I'm a Firefox fan myself and it didn't affect Firefox, so didn't bother me, I mainly went out looking for a way to get rid of it to help ya out. Tho I would definitely recommend looking into Mozilla Firefox, GREAT browser, very seldom is it affected by things like this.

I grew up on IE also, most people who have been around computers for a while have. It wasn't until not tooooo long ago that there were real options out there. It took me quite a while to try something else, for the exact same reasons, I was comfortable with IE, I knew it. That and my first foray away from IE was an early version of Netscape that was really buggy. Naturally this scared me from ever leaving IE again, then for some reason or another I tried Firefox and have not looked back since. The absolute only reason IE is still on my computer at all is because of the lameass webmasters out there who make their sites IE-Only. :P

I also have had many problems with search bars. Some just apprear and they screw things up. One was a virus or something. I got rid of them eventually.

Back when I actually used IE I used the Google toolbar, it was nice since Google is naturally my searcher of choice, and the popup blocker it came with was really nice.

Well the Google toolbar is definitely something you have to install yourself, you actually have to work at finding it on the Google site, not well advertised even, but it rocks.

  • Sir-SvenSir-Sven Member Posts: 773

Wow ! This is crazy! I've never used any other Internet programs other than Internet Explorer and Netscape! I really hated Netscape and IE was the default browser so I always used IE. I just downloaded Mozilla Firefox and it's great! Sometimes it seems like it loads a lot faster too. Some things change though, like this box I'm typing in, unless Admin just changed it. ::::07:: (and the smiles don't show on the box anymore)

Aye, there are definitely some differences when using Firefox. But supposedly Admin will have the crossbrowser edit box thingy ready soon so that won't be an issue anymore.

And yes, Firefox is faster than IE in most cases. It's a much more streamlined and efficient program made by people who actually care about their product because they want people to use it, not people who just throw a program together and not really care because it will be bundled with the OS used by like 95% of the people in the world and therefore be the default browser they use.

I have one more question for all of you! What E-MAIL provider do you use? I use hotmail, i'm starting to expect more so I was wondering if there was anything out there that is better than hotmail. If you use Microsoft Outlook or Outlook express, please tell me how to configure it, I can't :(
I can get Microsoft Outlook to have a seperate folder called Hotmail and I can check my mail there, but I want to be able to go straight to the inbox with the one they provide, if that makes any sense to anyone.::::21::

For email I use my mmorpg.com address and well, I run my guild's website so I have that email address also, use Outlook for both of those. Also have a Yahoo account, but they're asses and don't allow POP access so can't use Outlook for that, but Yahoo did recently up their limit to 100mb. Supposedly Hotmail will be following soon if they haven't yet. I have a Hotmail account also, but I never use it, too much spam mail for there, only reason I keep it around is that it's the address linked to my MSN Messenger.

But of the 2 major free email providers I'd go with Yahoo over Hotmail, if not for the larger capacity, I've always noticed that I seem to get FAR less spam and crap email at Yahoo than I do at Hotmail, the Spamguard and Bulkmail filters seem to work FAR better at Yahoo. But that may just be my case.

And yeah, I was responsible for Avast! also :) Or at least recommending it.

I guess I'll stick with hotmail. I never get any spam from hotmail. I used to maybe a year or two ago, but I got a new address and I havn't got much at all. And I am really clean about my computer and information on it, so I always delete messages I don't need on my e-mail. I just need to find out how to get Microsoft Outlook to make the default inbox be my hotmail inbox!

For Email I used to love Hotmail it was just the greatest... But then I started getting sooo much Junk Crap mail that I decided to kind of make a dummy email address for when I'm signing up to things and accounts and so forth.... So I set it up with Yahoo... But of late Hotmail seems to be getting suckier and suckier... every so often Hotmail is "Too busy" And basically now.. I use my yahoo account more than anything... It seems to be a bit faster that Hotmail too... And plus you can't go wrong with 100 mb of free space...

Oh and I forgot to tell you Kunou.. I also was reading that post when You recommended avant! and two days ago I deleted my old Antivirus and switched totally over to Avant... plus I was looking for a good free one anyways.. Oh and Spy Sweeper is really good... But I can't upgrade my definitions because you have to subscribe... but it's still pretty good..

Damnit... I had a great long post all typed out and it went away. :P

Anyway, here's the short summed up version:

Aye, I love Avast, I recommend it every time someone mentions AV stuff.

Did Spysweeper solve the problem? It found 13 things on my system that Ad-Aware was complete Ad-UNAWARE of and got rid of them. It sucks that they feel the need to charge a subscription for definition updates. :P

As for the emails I definitely prefer Yahoo to Hotmail, for almost every reason, ease of use, layout, capacity, etc. The only complaint I have against them is the lack of POP access. I definitely like to do everything as simple as possible. I use Trillian to combine all 4 of my IM programs (AIM, Yahoo, MSN, ICQ) into one, I use Outlook to check all my email, etc. But Yahoo doesn't let me. :( I remember when they moved POP access from the free accounts to the paid accounts, I was PISSED.
