Ive played WoW and Lineage2 off and on for the past 2 years (mostly WoW) and im really tired of it and looking for something new and different, I played Earth and Beyond back in the day and that was a really awesome game, so I was really attracted to Eve when I saw it, but im just trying to find out what it REALLY is like before I throw down the money to play. Ive seen alot of flashy screenshots and videos but nothing that can really tell me what the game is all about, im starting up a free trial today tho, waiting for the server to come back online. Anyway,
Is Eve just WoW in spaceships?
What is the PvP/PvE like in Eve?
what makes Eve fun/different from other games?
How time consuming is it? and how much time do you need to invest before the game starts to become fun/rewarding or before you hit the "end game" were you can start playing with other people.
Does PvP have alot of balance issues (were only a few class/specs can participate well)
Is it possible to "gimp" you character by starting out as the wrong thing for PvP/PvE etc?
What is the average day of Eve like (from a PvP and a PvE perspective)

Eve is brutal, dense, extremely complex, and has a pretty insane learning curve.
Let me qualify what I say by mentioning that I tried WoW for a few months at my good friend's behest and I was so bored by level 26 that I gave all my herbs, gold, and gear away and quit. For me the complete lack of any "death penalty" made the game irrelevant after a while.
I'm a three year eve vet with three accounts.. and I can honestly say I've been close to quitting the game a couple times a year... usually because of a particularly devastating loss. The first time this happened I was finally in a cruiser outfitted the way I wanted to be.... it seemed like it took forever to achieve.... and I got ganked and podded in a low security system and lost EVERYTHING I'd accumulated up to that point. And similar things have happened regularly since then. But in Eve you MUST risk your assets to move up in the game.
The greatness (and the hardness) of eve comes from the fact that CCP let people be as evil as they want to be within game mechanics. Scamming (tricking folks out of their money and items) is legal as long as no exploits are used. Piracy is a full time job for a large part of the player base.... there are almost ALWAYS people looking to kill you and take your stuff.
PvE has interesting aspects, but honestly I haven't run a mission in a year... and I will tell you the storylines and immersiveness are not as carefully crafted as they are in paint by numbers MMOs. PvP in eve is hardcore, decidedly not (thank god) FPS twitch fighting. One complaint I've heeard from people coming from WoW and the like is that Eve seems cold and impersonal.. You will not get to watch your buddies' scantily clad female night elves doing strip teases... from my point of view, once again, thank god.
Best thing to do is go try the game, trial is free, and do the tutorials. After you get at least somewhat competent flying around in a frig, go out and explore. You'll meet people who will help you and people who will kill you (alot). Eve can be VERY tough in the foothills, but I must say I'm still loving it after 3 years... and that's pretty impressive in my book.

I've been playing EVE-Online since BETA. What makes EVE-Online such a good game is that its not the same game for everyone. Where WoW - a good game at what it does, it a rollercoaster ride, EVE-Online is much more a Sandbox. You build and you play. But Like in the sandbox, you will only have few tools, and you will have to build your own fun.
EVE-Online has s a very mature playerbase a guess would be 25 years on avrage, and the reason for this is the complexity of the game.
But the complexity is something you chose, not something you are forced to deal with. It is possible for you to fly around ignorent of the deeper parts of the game dynamics and have fun.
Be warned though - EVE-Online is south if WoW is north. These two games can't be compared, and the only thing they share is that they can be played on the computer.
PvP is BRUTAL
But rewarding - Even after 5 years of EVE-Online PvP experience, my hands still gets sweaty, even when I gank a noob. When you Die you Die in such a way that it HURTS. Im not going into details of the gamedynamics, but just accept that Pain is part of the game. BTW all of EVE-Online is PvP area, put this way, you can shoot and hurt anyone anywhere.
PvE
Is fun and ever changing. Complex mission "quest" system, and much to dig in to. To be honest I have little experience with PvE. But from the people I know who do fly a lot of missions, they seem quite happy with doing it.
Pimp / Gimp
If you like to flash your new shiny gear, and shine. Perhaps EVE-Online is not the right place, sure you can fly some mean ships, but thats currently all you can do to show of your gaming skills.
I EVE you PIMP your self though your actions. Create a Corp "guild" and make a name of your self.
Gimp
It is possible to Gimp your Char, however if you ask around I would take you roughly around 6 months to really mess up your char. So in theoriy it's possible if you avoid any advice or forums for 6 months.
I've answered this question on this site so many times I'll just say refer to my older posts.
In short, EVE is about as opposite of WOW you can possibly get.
If you try it look up a player corp named EVE University. They are a corp that trains and helps noobs find direction. They will help you become a strong player before your cast into the vast massive EVE universe.
EVE rocks. There is no one path. Almost everything in the market is player made. Many many different corps to suit your play preference. You don't ever have to get into combat if you don't want to.
EVE also has more people on one server then any other mmo. The new graphics engine is being installed now. I can't wait. The Trinity engine is simply stunning.
SHOHADAKU
As was posted in my stations IRC the other day (names removed for their health):
> i need help in eve
> ...you installed eve?
> ya 14 day trial
> did you uninstall WoW?
> no
> then i can't help ya
EvE is completely different and is very difficult to explain to the point that I've given up and just get people to try it
How does EVE compare to other MMO's....
To put it quite simply, it doesn't. EVE is very much unlike any other MMO for a variety of reasons.
Possibly THE biggest difference from many other games is LOSS. Since EVE economy is almost 100% player based, nearly everything you buy, build and lose is added to that cycle. Because of that, everything you actually earn, is -hard- earned and you can lose it, without compensation (except for Insurance, but that would be going into too much detail, suffice to say, you stand to lose a lot). That and the fact that once you are outside the safe Empire space you are basically free-food for anyone else, makes EVE rewarding and frustrating at the same time.
Many people say the very real threat of actually losing something you worked very hard for is one of the best features of EVE. It creates a certain atmosphere you will find in few other games. There are drawbacks to that though and when I played EVE, I found that out the hard way. The EVE community, while rather mature and grown-up in comparison to let's say...WoW, is a harsh one. I have never in my MMO experiences before encountered so much intense feelings as I have during my time in EVE Online. Due to the fact that warfare and PvP in EVE has a very real threat of you actually losing hard-earned things, the tone with which people talk to each other is stacked accordingly. Escpecially when you get into the big Corporations with holdings and Space Sovereignity, Corporations that field Capital Ship Fleets which cost billions of in game currency to construct and maintain, which in turn require the entire corporation working hard to make that money and find those ressources...well, suffice it to say, that the higher the stakes, the higher the emotions involved.
EVE offers a very realistic world, including all the bright sides, comeraderie, friendship, support and help from other players, but also all the ugly sides, espionage, fraud, misuse of trust and cheating (not in game mechanic terms, mind you). EVE is the only game I have ever heard of where players actually infiltrate other corporations in REAL LIFE (meaning going to RL Meetings, parties etc) to gain an advantage in the game, to be the turncoat in a crucial moment.
That said, EVE is intense on a whole new level if you go into the big-world politics and corporations of the game.
As for the other parts of the game, that has already been sufficiently answered. ^^
Try it...but be careful. As the posters before me said. EVE is BRUTAL.
Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?
Final Fantasy 7
Oh yes, EVE isn't for everyone, it definitely has some problems which some folks can't/won't overlook, and it has a huge learning curve.
Do the tutorial several times, read new player guides from one of the many online sources, and join a corp right away... EVE University is a great place to start.

Well unlike WOW (which I did play for a while) there is no straight progression of a character. In this there is really no way to "gimp" ones character but you can make it take longer to accomplish something. Before you make your character read (can't link it right now because the main site is down but it is from goonfleet) this should give you a basic idea on where to put your points for intelegence and what not.
The difference between WOW and Eve is a point of much discussion and is hard to nail down. Never the less WOW is a story and the progression of a character is very set. At level 1 you are starting your story and at level 70 you have finished it. To play Eve you have to remove those confines to your character because that is not how Eve is set up.
Do to time constrants I have to make this quick.
PvP is tough and you need lots of friends at first, then depending on what you are doing you can either have lots of friends or go with just a few.
PvE is fairly easy at first and then gets a bit harder, there are fleet missions that can be challenging with a few friends.
Eve has the heavyest death penalty there is and it is not if your ship gets blown up it is when your ship gets blown up.
The beautiful thing is that Eve is as time consuming as you want it to be and you can start working with other people from day one. Join a chat channel call Eve University while in game. These guys are a great help.
Balance issues in Pvp, hmm that is a tough one. There are more builds then there are stars in the sky, some work well sometimes others work well other times. It depends much on the situation.
