Be careful before you patch EVE (risk to windows)

To quote someone from the thread.....

Yes, I applied the premium patch and now my windows boot.ini file is gone. The patch appears to delete it during the patching process instead of EVE's boot.ini.

First three lines of patch details:

Output folder: C:Program FilesCCPEVE

Delete file: oot.ini

Extract: boot.ini... 100%

    We have taken down the ability to download the Classic to Premium upgrade patch until we have determined where the issue lies and how we can resolve this. Full install clients have not exhibited this issue and are safe to download.

    Nice. What matters is a patch for a game is overwriting Windows files which are required to run your system. I'm sure people who re-booted and couldn't start Windows were really pleased at this simple little mistake.

    By the way, what about the people that have this happening, and it's their only comp? how are they going to read a Knowledge Base Article?

    Edit: I'd also like to know why something this important isn't on the front page of their site.

  • Unicorns_PwnUnicorns_Pwn Member Posts: 427

    I completely agree with you on that. This kind of mistake should have never happened.  Hopefully they will make an announcement in game for those who haven't read the forum yet. You would think such a large patch  would have been tested a little more thoroughly.. hell by the looks of it the patcher wasn't tested at all.

    man, i'm really scared to reboot now lol

    Luckily, it appears it only happens if you download and install the patch separately. I downloaded through the game itself, and can confirm ( at least in my case ) that it didn't change my boot.ini file.

    As far as announcing ingame, I found out about it because another player posted the knowledge article link in newb chat. The only time I seen any "official" person mention it was when a GM ( or whatever they call the newb channel mods ) responded to someone asking about the problem posted by that other player.

    You should see something along the lines of

    [bootloader]

    timeout=30

    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)WINDOWS

    [operating systems]

    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" ( or whatever OS you use )

    Sadly, I was just considering giving EvE a try finally and downloaded the full installer, but situations like this make me a bit cautious. I know mistakes can happen, but this is a very serious issue. And for some of those people affected it will be worse than others, as they won't have the resources or ability to fix this themselves.

    That's what's going to bite CCP in the ass over this. When a youngster was using Dad's comp to play, shuts it off, and Dad wants to know what happened to his comp the next day. As well as people who just don't have the technical knowledge to fix it, as you said. If someone takes their comp in for repair, and then later learns it was the result of this patch, guess who's gonna be footing that repair bill? CCP.

    I downloaded through the game last night (UK)....

    CCP musta fixed it now.

    Another way to repair the missing boot.ini file

    1. Go to C:Windowspss

    2. copy boot.ini.backup file

    3. go back to C: and paste there

    4. rename to boot.ini

    i went to the C: and didn't see a boot.ini file.

    i did see a BOOT.BAK though and renamed it to .ini, i just rebooted and it worked, so i think i am safe.

    although i did go to msconfig and i don't have a boot.ini tab. i don't think i ever had one.

    I have "General | System.ini | Win.ini | Services | Startup"

    No, it's because it works fine if you download through the game. It's the separate patch download they were hosting that had the corruption.

    Change that file back to a .BAK file and then do the fix Unicorns_Pwn posted:

    4. rename to boot.ini

    i headed to pss after i saw that post. all i have in that folder though are two files:

    system.ini.backup
    win.ini.backup

    no boot.ini.backup and i'm showing all hidden files/folders.

    You must have Restore turned off. What OS are you running? XP Home? Professional?

    If XP Pro, just make a new text document, name it boot.ini and paste this inside:

    [boot loader]

    timeout=30

    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)WINDOWS

    [operating systems]

    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

    Also, another reason that some people are safe from this ( myself included) is because I have Windows installed on drive D: , while boot.ini is always installed on  the C: drive by Windows.

  • doomrahdoomrah Member CommonPosts: 376

    Pro. that could be. that sounds like something i probably turned off (who knew a game would delete my windows files) LOL.

    well my boot.ini right now looks like this:

    [boot loader]
    timeout=1
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

    looks right to me, according to the other posts around.

    I was listening to Eve radio while playing Civ 4 and the DJ was warning listeners about this.

    Someone made an oopppsie.  It gave me a chuckle (not because its messing with peoples computers).  I got nothing against CCP or Eve. Just that the fact that the hype has been going on about this update and then opps someone dropped the ball somewhere.

    Words been traveling around pretty fast I am sure. So hopefully most people realize whats going on. And the casualty's are minimal.

    Hope you all are enjoying your new update for those that are playing. Looking forward to some screens in the near future if their not already up, :)

    This is the safest way to fix this:

    Download:

    Windows XP (http://ccp.vo.llnwd.net/o2/boot/winxpboot.ini)( also windows 2000 installed in a folder named "Windows" )

    OR

    Windows 2000 (http://ccp.vo.llnwd.net/o2/boot/win2kboot.ini)

    + Copy it into the root directory of your Windows drive (eg. C:)

    + Rename it to "boot.ini"

    + Go to start, then Run and type in "msconfig"

    + Click on the "boot.ini" tab, and select "Check all boot paths"

    + There will be a series of popups for the invalid installation paths in the above files (14 if all goes to plan), and the correct settings will be placed in your boot.ini.

    Well the first thing I would like to say is FRACK CCP and EVE these punks scrapped my windows. Why should I pay for a game that trashes my operating system. I wouldnt spit on CCP if they were on Fire. Good job CCP you wont be getting anymore money from me.

    I just want to know where to go to sign up for a class action lawsuit. These PC repair men can be expensive you know.

    this sounds less like a bug and more like deliberate mischief....

    If you don't want to wait for repairman this should work:

    Boot from your OS cd. and follow the directions to start Recovery Console. Choose the corresponding number asked of you for your OS is on, normally its #1 Then type:

    Attrib -H -R -S C:Boot.ini

    DEL C:Boot.ini

    BootCfg /Rebuild

    Fixboot

    PS. I take no responsibilty if it doesn't work so don't go starting any lawsuits against me :p and only try this if you have already rebooted your comp and can't access windows anymore.
