Have you ever wondered...when you play FPS'es and games why are you always the "hero that goes in and saves the day by killing 500000 monsters". Like in FEAR. I've played the F.E.A.R demo and it's like every other game I play ( well not really but thats not the point) your whole team gets killed or dissapears. Why is it always YOU that survives. Like say in a milatary based your SPECIAL FORCES SQUAD enters the building hunting someone down(For example, not using any game) 6 members in the squad(not including you). 1 Member falls through the hole in the floor:dies. One guy goes into the room and gets gang banged by 10 people with guns:dies. One guy runs into a mine: dies. One guy decided to go recon:Dissapears. One guy gets sniped:dies.Another guy,yet dissapears.The soldiers that dies had the same training as you. And etc etc you don't differ much from them but how is it not you that dies too? I mean your squad just entered the building and got OWNED. We need more squad based games like Star Wars:Republic commando. You know to make it more...realistic.

 

I've just watched a gameplay video of F.E.A.R Persues Mandate. The second expansion pack and what the feck? A member of your team tells you another member of the squad dissapeared. You follow him and hes slightly ahead of you. just SLIGHTLY. He freaking gets blown up. You survive without a scratch. A guy in big armor with a gun comes out. You own him.A little later you walk through a hall way and 3 FRIKKING GUYS fall out of the ceiling,dead.Members of your squad.

I know how you feel man. It's like even the best game developers can suck at story telling. Fable story sucks. Wow my home burned down, like in every other game. I can't remember the last game I played where I felt a real sense of emotion when a main character died and such. Well there was Halo 3 with the Sarg and that was messed up. At least he didn't go out like no biytch.

FEAR is a little scary. It's really the sudden things that get you even if they aren't portrayed as demonic, strange or supernatural in any way. Other than that there are your common pools of blood in darkened hallways, little girls walking on ceilings, visions of dead people, weird and freaked out scenes that flash before you suddenly and disappear a little while later, rivers of blood floating through the air, etc.

I never played it myself, but I've watched others play it.

If a developer released a game where you were the guy that died in the tutorial, you'd file a class action lawsuit. You have to be the hero to live through a game nowadays.

Yeah but there are OTHER characters you can be. Not only that if it isn't such a "I create my own player" type of game it would add at least some kinda drama.

Well it's just that kind of story. I mean, stories where this one man survives against all odds can be pretty fun - and if only one person survives, it'll have to be the player, otherwise the game would both suck (with the worst ending ever), and be half as long (you die half way through). Look at it this way - say the game was a movie, a squad of seven go in, 6 die, and the one remaining has to fight against all odds to survive. Say at that point it turned into a game and you started playing as one of the characters - which one would you play as? The alive one of course!

Although it seems annoying - if you think about it, it's inevitable for that story line.

Ok, so you want to pay $50 to be the guy that dies in the first mission than the credits roll?

No, I didn't think so.

You are the guy that always survives because he's telling the story of how he survived, and you experience it by playing through it. You have to be the one who survived. You can't die within 5 mins in a game. They can't charge 50 bucks for that

Yeah,Yeah but don't you think it seems a bit realistic for your team mates to die...almost instantly at the beginning of the game?I'm not saying you should die instead of your team mates but still, why do people who make games make the same concept every single time. YOur whole team dies...? Than you go in and beat the game...bit unrealistic don't you think? I mean your team or allies die and your the ONLY one that survives?

That's why I actually kind of liked the campaigns in the Battlefield games. You don't live one life, you live several lives, through different nameless soldiers.

It's probably the most fair and realistic style of single-playing FPS gaming I can think of right now.

I had to throw in that Mass Effect of Gears of War are two games that would bring out some emotion.

Max Payne 1 & 2  has the best storyline ever made in a computer game, i actually cared about the characters too.

This game has a great idea but a bad story and you can't relate to the characters or care about them at all.

Well just the parts with Carimine and Kim's death...I loled when Kim died as I didn't expect and Asian to die in a game so soon. Carmine was cool as hell and they made him die in the most BS way of all.

Wow, Max Payne. That is the game that made me cry. The first senerio in that game made me cry like a little girl and actually produced a fear in me that no other game has during that first part of a game. I didn't even wanna go up them stairs.

For me it's when someone died at the end of the 2nd one, don't wanna say who incase someone hasn't played it.

I didn't finish or got too far in Max Payne 2. Is it worth it popping it in and finishing it? Wait...I don't even think I finished the first Max Payne.

Yeh i recently played both of them starting with 1 as the story carries over to the 2nd, still some of the best games i've ever played because of the story and i love the easter eggs in the game.

If the game has squad A.I., I usually stray away from it just because I like taking things into my own hands and not having anyone else get in the way.  I guess its opinions, but I enjoy me and myself taking down the enemy rather than the sometimes worthless squad A.I. running into my crossfire.

if want a thinking and good squad that doesn't die(and if they do, you're pretty much fucked)

 

As for Max Payne... they really need to create a 3rd installment in the series. Awesome games!
