I quit Vanguard about 2 weeks after release because of the various major bugs, and the low server population. I started playing again about a month ago, and it has improved a lot in my opinion.

Both of the issues I mentioned above have been addressed to some extent. There's still some bugs, but for most people, nothing game breaking. There are a few unlucky souls who still get a crash-to-desktop on a fairly regular basis, but they are in the minority.

The servers were merged a few months back, so the population is much higher on the remaining servers. I hear the PvP server is still relatively dead due to hacking, but the PvE servers Seradon and Xeth are both in good shape population-wise. They usually run at about "Medium" capacity during North American primetime.

I'm enjoying it a lot more. After release, I only got to lv 14 and then quit. I'm now lv 32 and still going strong, have joined a guild, and am looking forward to the release of the first raid zone in the next month or so. I'm not a huge fan of raids, but it'll be interesting to finally see how the end-game content is going to shape up, and it may draw more players back to the game.

The game is not going to be re-released, so I wouldn't wait for that. At most, there will be a big ad campaign promoting the game and bringing in a lot of new players. There won't be a new server, or a character wipe, or anything else that would make it better to wait to play till then.

If you have ever played Everquest 1 and enjoyed it, you will probably enjoy Vanguard. It is very similar, although more solo-friendly. However, grouping does usually result in much better exp than soloing, so a lot of people will group. Also, quests give very nice rewards and often require a group to complete them. I have done very little soloing since about level 18. All the content prior to that is mostly easily soloed, so there aren't a lot of groups to be found. I admit, sometimes it takes me a while to find a group, and during that time I solo... but I usually manage to get or start a group.

I'd recommend to try it out. It's a lot better than it was at release, and a lot of returning players who dropped it like a hot potato a year ago are finding it a much improved game.
