i would like to build a new pc.

but i am pretty clueless.

it looks like a simple operation, and i've been playing pc games forever, i have done basic upgrades to the shitty dell rig my folks gave me 7 years ago, but it is finally crapping out. i can't play any new games without wanting to throw it out the window.

i've replaced ram sticks, and video cards, i think i have a pretty good idea how the whole thing works, it's just the new product info is so hard to understand. too many numbers, chipsets, dual and quad cores etc. intel, amd.

i want to build a pc that i can play games on for the next 7 years, so i know i want to spend about a grand, maybe a little over, but i want to get the most "bang for my buck" so to speak. also i don't want to fuck up and buy incompatible parts and such. i figure there are probably alot of competent pc enthusitist on this forum, if i could get some advice that'd be great, maybe a list of products? just use laymens terms please, i had to wiki "overclocking" and i'm still not sure how to do it. not that i want to,

i'm just trying to give you a sense of my level of ignorance. i know more than the average person, but not as much as the mega pc guru.

thanks

I'll just cut and paste something I wrote from another thread. I believe both of these sites also have actual assembly guides (somewhere). For example - here's a stickied overclocking guide from the Anandtech overclocking forums.

    ----------------------------------

These are two good hardware review sites, and both places also have excellent forums where people will help you if ask them politely (and have read the FAQ's first, etc.). But I tend to prefer Anandtech's forums.

A lot of people (including me) trust Newegg as a prime spot to actually buy components from.

Building your own PC is not that difficult. I built my first computer 2 years ago with similar experience as you (upgrading Dells and stuff).

I used a PC step by step guide from PC Gamer who I believe puts out a magazine every year with such a guide. You might check out PCgamer.com or google and find a similar guide. It helped me tremendously!

Building a computer is really quite simple however. Took me less then 2 hours, and maybe another 1-2 hrs for installing all the drivers, software, windows and all that... and that was my first build ever!

Don't be scared of it at all, just be sure you ground yourself so you don't end up blowing some expensive piece of circuitry! (grounding wrist strap attached to the metal on your computer case)

In the end, you can build a computer to your exact preferences and I guarantee you that you'll be a helluva lot more proud of your final product then just buying something new from Dell.

    Good luck!
