I was in the beta but never converted. Housing was one of the many things that was needed to pull me in so I was glad to hear they have it implemented. Instead of rushing out to sub I looked a little closer at houses and found this:

So yes, they have houses but this hook system they used sounds like it negates most of the fun of owning a home in an MMO. Color me impressed they added them in a free expansion however.

Book 12 I think will add rotating, great news. They really should move to free placement of items, lighting, coloring/textures, more furniture and of course items that have uses in your home.

It still amazes me that a game that gets beat-up as much SWG it still has the concept of housing in an MMO so right. It may not be perfect and needs many more improvements it really gives players a lot of creative freedom which LOTR is lacking at the moment. This freedom goes beyond just decorating but the actually placement of a house.

I think this is a great first start I just hope they don't continue to build on a system which quite frankly should be junked and give players greater freedom.

Doesn't sound like a great system at all! Players leave game to leave their houses vacant. One giant landscape of nothing but vacancy. Little Ghost towns littering the landscape.

    No thank you!

I agree, although the bulk of my post was geared toward the limitations of the hook system for interior decorating.

I do believe the current rent system and the inability to prepay months or a year in advance hinders such ghost towns from spreading or remaining for long dormant periods. As I understand, the system also expedites evictions quickly when you fail to pay, helping keep the abandoned homes in check. Lastly, 1 house per account and server further helps. This however is all moot point because the instanced neighborhood system looks as though it is firmly in place.

Ah, ok, I see. That makes perfect sense. I just looked at this "hook" system and it's horrible. So /agreed.

The explenation given was that they could give us a house with a hook system in issue 11 and gradually improve it, or delay the whole thing until book 12 or 13.  I personslly am glad they pushed it out as soon as they had it mostly done. I actually have had a lot of fun farting around with my house.

In the future they are adding the ability to rotate the objects on hooks at the least.  If there is still a lot of demand for it they may switch to a free form placement system eventually.  Personally, I'd be happy if I could designate what can go on each floor hook and rotate items.   I don't think a total freeform placement scheme is all that necessary.  Even with the current limited system you can get a ton of variety in how your interiors look.

Personally, I don't think a SWG style "plop a house down anywhere" would have worked well with LoTRO.  The adventuring zones are too carefully designed, letting players jam a house anywhere they like would screw up the zones for everyone else.  In SWG you had these huge empty procedurally generated planets, that's a game where it makes sense to let players build anywhere they like.  Vanguard and UO likewise also had enormous amounts of essentially unused space.

Personally I think the housing in LoTRO is pretty fun, as long as you aren't expecting it to be a game unto itself.  The system is pretty good for what it's meant to be: an entertaining diversion.   If you wanted "Martha Stewart presents: the home decorating MMO" then I agree that LoTRO wouldn't be a great choice.

If you can stand playing a game that otherwise bites, SWG does have pretty much the best housing system on the market.  I'd go with UO after that.  EQ II has a great interior decorating system if you don't mind not having a yard.  If housing is the only thing that matters to you, might want to check one of those out.

I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.

I'm not sure I agree with you about a delay. I think I would have prefered the delay to have freeform furniture placement rather than the hook system. That said, Turbine seems open to the idea of implimenting it in the future as the game expands, and considering their track record of improving things in this game, I can be satisfied with what housing is for now. I'm one of those types that doesn't like my creative impulses hampered by somewhat arbitrary design features, so an eventual switch over would be nice. I did purchase a delux house though, so I'm obviously not completely against the hook concept. Heck, I made myself poor over that house.
