World of Warcraft: Blizzard Confirms New MMO Project

SzarkSzark News ManagerMember Posts: 4,420

Gamespot is reporting that a Blizzard Community Representative has confirmed that recent rumors about a new MMOG from Blizzard are indeed correct.

Many news sites, including MMORPG.com were first alerted to this possibility when Blizzard ran job postings on their official website looking for developers to work on a next-gen MMO.

While no specific details are available, speculation has started.

It's been assumed for quite some time that Blizzard Entertainment is working on a new massively multiplayer online game. In April, Blizzard indicated a "next-gen MMO" was in the works by way of job listings on its official Web site. Playing coy, however, the World of Warcraft developer simply noted that it had a number of unannounced projects under its awnings, but no official confirmation of a new title would be forthcoming.

At this year's Austin Game Developer's Conference, Blizzard CEO Michael Morhaime reiterated that fact, saying the studio was "starting to think about what we want to do next," but that Blizzard wouldn't be ready to open up about a new project "probably not for a long time."

That time is apparently drawing nearer--somewhat, at least. After a new batch of job requisitions were posted to Blizzard's Web site, WOW fans flocked to the game's message boards to salivate over the prospects of World of Guitar Hero--stemming from the developer's recent merger with megapublisher Activision. After a fan speculated that the openings were simply for Wrath of the Lich King--announced during this year's BlizzCon as the second expansion to WOW--a Blizzard community representative for the first time officially confirmed that Blizzard was working on a new MMOG.

I'm just wondering why they're making another to be honest. They've already got an award winner sitting in there hands... But as they say, you can never make enough money!

I'm guessing its geared towards the story of starcraft.

As much as I love Starcraft, I hope it's a Diablo MMORPG. I just hope they get to use the same people who made DIablo 2, they did a wonderful job on that one.

I guessing it won't be for 3 - 5 years.  In that time I'm also guessing that many ex-WoW players will be playing WAR, AoC and some other game.  Coming out with a fresh game 3 - 5 years from now will bring all those people back.   It would be a very smart move for them.

If they do that, they compete with themselves even more than they will be already. Another fantasy MMO? Even Blizzard wouldn't be that stupid. I think.

Why the hub-bub about the new MMO?

Blizzard has it posted on their website that they're looking for designers for a "Top Secret" MMO.

It actually has that labeled next to the positions they're looking to fill.

But, given their recent merger I highly doubt it will be Blizzard IP.

It will either be completely "new," or something Activision had already in the works.

I was thinking it was going to be a Diablo mmo.. but how many times can we kill diablo? true I never really followed the story line.. so I dont know if they left the story open at the end. but I think I would rather them keep Diablo small (single player style).

Starcraft I feel the same.. keep it small.

what else do they have? those three vikings? maybe a mmo about Vikings! that would be interesting =P

    Starcraft Universe

which will be something similar to Hellgate. Which means it will target the mainstream, no-brainer twitch-wanna-be-but-actually-click-click-click market.

Rejoice if it is, but there would be a great risk of it actualy beeing fun, even for a short time.

LOL sorry i got a kick out of that.

On a serious note. Blizzard is good at taking what other games have done and improving on them, then dumbing them down so my 5 yr old niece can play it. So I am really curious as to what they will do. No games have really tried anything new so that means blizzard will have to try it or make a clone of there own clone :P I like many others am not a fan of WoW but even us "WoW haters" should admit we would be willing to try something from blizzard if they do actually try something NEW in the mmorpg market.

A "Top Secret" MMO? Gosh, I hope not, that was a horrible movie (Val Kilmer was okay, though).

    1. Starcraft 2 is in development. That means they would be working on an MMO of a game they are currently developing. Why do that? Wouldn't they be better served to wait and develop Starcraft 2 and then branch from it and not develop two games (in two different genres nonetheless) at the same time?
Actually, that is a prime reason why it -COULD- be Starcraft Online.

Remember that development of World of Warcraft actually started just after Warcraft 3. So basically, they would just repeat their publishing and development schedule. Besides, if they start development now, they still will have quite a while until it will be ready, you know. ^^

    2. Well you might say they would be developing it years down the road? I don't agree. The advertisements for the jobs have been posted for sometime and the hiring is now. Given they way the jobs read as well as the linked story, it seems that development is beyond the conceptual stage. It seems to me the details are being ironed-out and its not "hey this would be neat" stage. So we know it would have to launch sooner rather than later.
    3. Blizzard has three major game worlds: Starcraft, Warcraft and Diablo. WOW has continued the world of Warcraft, Starcraft 2 will continue it, and there is nothing since Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction which launched years ago. So shouldn't something fill the Diablo void first?
So in summary a Starcraft MMO is ruled out based on the fact that Starcraft 2 is coming anfd that I doubt Blizzard would be co-producing two titles of the same type, name, world, but different genres at the same time. To me, thats bad business. Why not develop two different worlds and maximize your profits?
So what could do that? A Diablo MMO. It has a HUGE ready-made player base. Imagine if the online component it has now was subscription based?
Also, the classes are already there from Diablo (barbarian, paladin, amazon, necro, druid, Soreceress, Asassin). Add to that, the talent trees are already developed.
Finally, at the end of Lord of Destruction (the Diablo 2 expansion pack), it left it open to a sequel. At that point, it would be a great yet simple leap to the mmo world. My money is on a Diablo 2 MMO but who knows. Just my thoughts.

Although I agree that Starcraft will not be their next MMO (Because Blizzard CEO said as much in an interview earlier this year not because of your conjecture), I disagree that it will be a Diablo MMO. Why? Because it would compete with itself in that WOW is a swords and fantasy styled MMO and Diablo (as you noted with the classes) is a swords and fantasy styled MMO. Too much of a genre similarity. I honestly think it will either be a new IP or WOW2. Everything is just a guess at this piint though.

I tend to agree with this as well. They are going to stick with what works and what will make them $. I would think it would be Starcraft related, from previous patterns it makes the most sense.

Again, i would like to point out that Pardo has already said that the next MMO they make will not be SC. Blizzcon and Leipzig '07

Good point but why hire another team to develop and publish the game that another team is working on? Especially when its artists and such.  Make sense?

Also check out these position announcements:

    http://www.blizzard.com/jobopp/art-lead-3d-environment.shtml

    http://www.blizzard.com/jobopp/art-3dback.shtml

Notice how they only refer to Diablo and Diablo 2? Interesting that the announcement says nothing of Starcraft or Warcraft?

    Then check this out:

    http://www.blizzard.com/jobopp/artist-senior-3d-character.shtml

Notice the first sentence, " The team behind Diablo I and II is looking for a skilled Senior 3D Character Artist."

And all of those positions have the "top secret" box next to them instead of a Starcraft or Warcraft box. Again, Diablo 1 and 2 mentioned over and over. No mention of Starcraft or Warcraft. It seems to me they want the ideal candidate to be familiar with and understand Diablo 1 and 2. Again, just speculation but it seems to me the emphasis is on Diablo. Even if it isn't, its fun to speculate and I could care less if it is Diablo or Starcraft. I loved them both!

I've checked all of the links. Two observations here:

    1) They all say "Blizzard, the developer behind Diablo I and II, ...". It does not say anything else. Just a reference to popular titles. I agree, this could mean that they are looking for people interested in that kind of genre and are thus developing that kind of game. However, I do not see a pressing connection between that and the title that would be in development.

    2) The positions have Top Secret beside them, of course. Blizzard has not yet released any information on WHAT it will be. It could be anything. I for one think there's a good chance it could be Starcraft related MMO. But I have no proof. It#s justw hat I think. ^^
