I guess brawny, hairy guys must do something for you. I for one welcome the idea that a real mans man is represented here. No metrosexuals or any of that nonsense.
No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-
I honestly believe that the fact that 90% of gamers are male is a missed opportunity. I believe The game that appeals to female gamers (aside from being a glorified chat room) would have a significant advantage within the market. If you think about it, If you went to a nightclub that was 90% men ...is that the place you would want to stay? The trick is making a game that appeals to both sexes, since not many men want to spend 4 hours a night at "Mall Online".
All that aside, I believe that AoC is still a part of the 'boys club' MMORPG.
If you seriously believe there's no such thing as girl gamers or that girls can't have the same playstyle as the other sex......let's just say i find you must have a relative small group of friends...

As one of about... uh... Two Quite a few (!!) ladies who post on these boards, one can tell pretty quickly that this game's primary demographic is going to be made up of the male sex.
But, GODDAMNIT, I would love to be able to make a pretty boy in a iensy-weensy loincloth. I wish developers would start realizing that us ladies do occasionally play men. Personally, but I have a feeling most lady gamers are in the same mindset of m'self, I like playing pretty guys...
EDIT: OMFG, YAY! I GOT ME MY FIFTH STAR!
Gimme a hug!
(Please?)
EDIT2: I stand corrected. They're a bunch of us ladies. Whoo-hoo! (Which makes sense, because us Acolytes have 10+ ladies, and we have ~200 members. D'oh.)

Grats on Star #5, you have now officially reached MMORPG.com's end game content
However, I think this is a good discussion thread to bring up this question.
What can MMORPG developers do to make MMORPG games more interesting to female gamers? Are there specific apects of a game aside from loin cloth male Models? Honestly, I wager that a game would attract more females if they were to have some loin clothed males on the flash banners as opposed to endless "Look at My Bikinni!! You must play this game!" banners.
i don't think anyone is saying that girls can't play video games, or that video games are 'not for girls' or whatever, but i really think that the number of girls who actually WANT to play video games are pretty small. thats just how it is. (did someone say this already, if so, move your eyes right on by my post)
and thats fine for video game companies, nothing wrong with them targeting a market. can't we just make games people friendly? what is in a gmae that would make a girl not want to play? i mean, girls know what these gmaes consist of, and we can choose to play based on that. i mean, what makes it a 'guys game' anyway? lets not take the BEST parts of video games out because...i dunno, i can't think of a good reason... beacuse people who don't even buy the game might get there feelings hurt? are their feelings the issue? i dunno. .
but most importantleeeeeee hurray for guys in miniskirts!!!!!

From a female perspective, is there anything that you have read or seen about Age of Conan that turns you off the game? If so, and you still chose to play the game, what would you do or could do to ammend those issues?
As a girl gamer I enjoy playing female characters to get the feel of being a part of the fantasy, but oft times the content is better for males (better hair and skin and clothes options) and if I don't want to be harassed by some overzealous boys its easier to just play a guy to enjoy the game without some trying to start a relationship with you . AoC looks really cool to me and I will definitely try it, but from my point of view what keeps me in a game is not just pvp or pve and most of the mmo's generally are just focused on that and I cant blame them when it seems the predominate audience is male and most people really enjoy pvp. For me Im more interested in custom content, crafting, building being able to change the content of the world accesorize and chatting of course.

Out of curiosity, would the fact that pixelated nudity in AoC being in game strongly in a female perspective put you off at all? Would you think that it has any different meaning on how possibly you might have been talked too (in a negative way) before in other games in comparison? or would you say its something you have come across before and can rise above thru experience, does this trouble you with AoC?
No that wouldn't put me off at all, I love the detail. I don't think the appearance really has anything to do with being harassed by some players. That happens even on muds lol if you have just a female name even when the game is supposed to be for a mature audience some people just are not. There is no helping it and is not limited to males only. Its that way on every game Ive played and its not stopped me from playing.

Good on you Gayia! I hope that when you do try AoC it has the features that you are looking for to keep you entertained and satisfied. I think that if people should realise that AoC doesn't pertain to exclude bad behaviour, or give any reason whatsoever for people to act in a bad / negative way to the female gamer.
In fact on the official boards some of the more outspoken members are mature female gamers, looking and arguing for the same qualities you mentioned before that you look for in a game. One person being 'Pandora' - what a bundle of joy with such a dry sarcastic sense of humour.

eeh, looks pretty badass to be honest..... i asssume youre talking about the nudity? i don't mind a titty here and there, and like i said, nothing wrong with them aiming for their target market. at the same time, your right, if was was going to NOT play conan, it'd be becuase of the nudity. but i think i am going to play it cause it looks pretty good.
~`all the pretty ladies want to be like me, cause i've got a pocket full of candy`~
This is one of the games that I dont intend to play..I as a feminine person, technically male, appreciate some shopping, crafting, fancy little jewelry, photobooks, colourful appearances and people, some general luvin etc etc you name it to go ALONGSIDE my fighting, crits, epic armour and swords
This game seems to become the most testosterone filled one there is....which is probably the next big thing for a lot of gamers

ONe of the biggest issues for the developers is that they remain true to the original stories. For good or ill, they have done an excellent job in this. I wager, if you dont like the Conan mythos, you will not like this game no matter your gender.
I had given up on fantasy games until I saw the pics of AOC with these awesome looking studs in skirts! Weeeeee!!!! I can't wait to play!!!! Finally something for us women!

Hehe in the end it doesn't matter what sex they are... it's a game and in the heat of battle if thier your foe, they'll get cut down, pretty simple ;
Not many ladies play games to start with and i don't expect even if they created a game that was suppose to be attractive for both guys and girls (50/50) it would end up being something like 80% guys and 20% girls, most if not all of my girl friends don't play games they only use thier comp to chat with other than the usual music ect.
However the younger generation will prolly be more in "good equal ratings" compared to right now.
Right now i guess it's just Sims that's the game for most of the ladies, the other few "minority" who ventures ahead into mmorpgs might prolly just end in WoW since it's more like a trend or culture with social cultures in there (YIIIKES!!).
In the end, why bother we play games to have fun and either blow something up or slay it to become some big mean guy or hero, whether there's a dude or chick besides you doesn't matter other than prolly making it different.... hell chick parties are the best places, then you know how it's like to be in a 1 to 10 scenario haha.
Doubt that it can be done. Similar to movies where women generally like romantic/drama movies and men like action/thrillers a mix of the two is generally not a good thing and any attempt to cater to female gamers would probably scare away a portion of male gamers.

OK In all seriousness, from this females perspective, nothing has turned me off of AOC. It seems to be a pretty straight forward low-fantasy, hack and slash with all of the most innovative technological features of current MMO's. The adult content/mature rating is long overdue in my opinion, I knew sooner or later game devs would realize we are not all 16 year old boys BTW female gamers are growing in number, it would be sheer folly (and financial folly for game developers) to beleive that most dont game because one does not personally know any female gamers.
Alot of the game features I really think are great (Seiges, player cities, etc.) and if they get implemented should make the game very exciting. I played AO for a little bit and I thought the character building was one of the most complex and original that I had ever seen, so I trust that Funcom will make AOC character building just as interesting. I typically play Shaman healers as mains then perhaps level other characters after that, and I really like what I have read about the class in AOC. I think the blood/decapitations as well as the new combat will make fighting fun. I love blood and guts!!! Rawr!!! And men in miniskirts. So its the best of both worlds for me!

Dont ever let facts stand in the way of a good point!
64% of Online Gamers are women That's 64% of close to 117 million gamers in North America alone.
Most female MMO gamers are between 23-40 and play about 22 hours a week.
I certainly wont argue that men outnumber women when it comes to MMO's, but to make a statement that not many women play games, is sheer ignorance.
Just check out some of the trailers that show actual gameplay. I really love their outfits! http://www.gametrailers.com/player/25895.html
