How do I get the serial number or an account to play it?

I had the same problem, although I was able to create an account there was no serial to activate the trial so I just deleted the download and uninstalled the game and never gave it another look.

If you live in North America you can get a trial key form mmorpg.com here:

http://www.mmorpg.com/freetrials/cohissue11_trial.cfm 

Other than that it looks like someone may need to send you a key, a bit like the buddy key system (not 100% sure on this).

 It's not only for North-America, i live in Europe and got a trial-key to!

I believe that the trial from mmorpg.com will only allow you to play on the US servers. If you wish to play on the EU servers, try hitting up EU trial hope that helps!
