Conservatives' pessimism is conducive to their happiness in three ways. First, they are rarely surprised -- they are right more often than not about the course of events. Second, when they are wrong they are happy to be so. Third, because pessimistic conservatives put not their faith in princes -- government -- they accept that happiness is a function of fending for oneself. They believe that happiness is an activity -- it is inseparable from the pursuit of happiness.
Why should SWG have atmospheric flight? The closest to that in the movies is the battle on Hoth - snowspeeders vs AT-ATs, and Luke crashing on Dagobah. What the hell would you do if you could fly in the atmosphere? Fight each other? You can do that already in space, just as Lucas intended. Buzz people on the ground? Do we need to think for more than a second to realise how annoying that would get within minutes? Even the almighty WoW only brought free-flight in for TBC because it would've been impossible to implement to the original game and for the same reasons it will never be brought in to SWG. The terrain isn't designed to allow it (maps have borders and unfinished areas you are not meant to see) and the engine, physics that is, couldn't handle it. Come to think of it, the graphics probably would suffer as well - I get lag already sometimes in my AV21!
It was suggested to bring atmoshperic flight into controled areas for game play 4 years ago in beta within starports and instances. The current maps for Empire Divided can support it between travels of cities without a loading screen. Some players wanted this star wars immersion. But loading screens were added to speed up travel time. It was also requested for aerial battles, beggars canyon, and travel. Personally I think it should be a controlled environment with the Heroic encounters for new content. I also feel it should fill in gap that does not exist with star ports. Pilots should be able to travel between cities with no down load screen. Ships should be landing in starports- multiple starports in one city. But under controlled rules.
I agree with you that griefing players on the ground is uncalled for. That could easily be regulated. But think about it in terms of vision and gameplay. It could really open the door for more content but it has to be regulated and not be a free for all. It is just opening the door for what "Star Wars " can be in a MMORPG and what is still great possibilities for SWG that matches the name. Even Stargate Worlds will have atmposheric flight but regulated. It can work without forcing people to do it.
Yep they do need to tweak the engine like EQ II has done with the same engine.
Actually, at this point I'd be impressed if SOE just gave player cities some kind of asphalt or concrete textures rather then dirt or weeds. Why is SWG living in the primitive age? Where's the technology?
Because Vanguard is a newer game with a newer engine?
lol I figured you'd be the first to come to SWG's defense.
But nevertheless thats not a good enough answer. You should be demanding more from SWG, not accepting excuses.
They didn't plan for the Z axis when doing movement for the planets. They said if they were to ever add it in they would have to completely revamp the entire engine which is pretty much not going to happen. While it would be a great idea for a future say KoToR game it just isn't available for use in the current build of SWG no matter how much people want it.
We have mounted Rancors now though!!! What more can people ask for! O yeah, red stripes on them to resemble night sister sith witches rancors or blue stripes for Felucian rancors!
There is no doubt it is possible, saying they can't because of the engine is a lame excuse.
The problem is though the SWG devs are rubbish, you only have to look at the game to see that. They also aren't the same ones that origionally made the game.

Revamping an engine is no easy task...it's not something they can go and do over night and magically make atmospheric flight appear.
My fav idea would of been SOE taking a couple planetside style server's, reskin them into Hoth and {insert planet's name here} reskin the armie's into reb, imp and hutt, make your ingame SWG faction standing=battle Rank. Go to a NPC for a shuttle trip to the battle planet server. Land on the BP talk to a recruiter draw your equipment and there you go endless mindless clone zerging in a starwars setting. On the BP the planetside engine and ruleset would be in effect. Think about it, how hard could of that been to incorporate into the game.
The graphics for when you fly in space looks like something that could be played on a 386. The graphics were a lot better for the later Xwing and Tie Fighter games, why not borrow the graphics, and game play from there as opposed to the garbage graphics they have?
Because Vanguard is a newer game with a newer engine?
lol I figured you'd be the first to come to SWG's defense.

I completely and utterly hate SWG, and I'm not ashamed to say that Obraik is 100% correct with his response.
Vanguard was released a year ago with flight in mind. SWG was released about four or five years ago without even having vehicles in mind. There's a world of difference between the two games.

If they wanted to do Atmospheric Flight again the game would need a whole need Engine to do it...
Little rumor I heard back in the day before we go on.... The rumor was that when Koster and the other's left/got fired from EA at the time they had been working on a whole new game engine for Ultima Online 2, or whatever they where calling the game that month... I think at that point it was Worlds of Ultima Online or something... Anyway! As the rumor I heard go's, when Koster and the other's left they where allowed to take the UO2 game engine with them, and that the SWG Game Engine is really the UO2 Game Engine...
I do believe that story to be true, the UO2 engine had things in it like a whole dancer/entertainer system. And also a little fun fact as well, the guys who worked on Jump to Lightspeed where the guys working on Wing Commander Online over at EA. That's why JTL plays more like a Wing Commander game, rather then the old X-Wing/TIE Fighter games... That rumor is so insane and out there that I can only believe it to be true...
Still....
The game would need a new Engine, the big fault right now is SWG is for the most part a 'flat earth' game. All the Planets in the game are just flat, something we all most likely know. Also the other thing (and this is ahead of it's time imho) is to really make it work, we'd have to have a ship in Space go from flying in space, to going into an 'Atmospheric Flight' now that may sound easy on paper... But think about the amount of code that would have to be done just to do that....
I don't know tho, I'm not a programmer... But that doesn't sound like any easy task to really do.

That is really interesting. Where did you hear this?
EQ is the same engine as SWG. They have flight. Same memory issues as well and some of the same bugs! But they (EQ II) have progressed with this engine because they have more staff. Simple solution. If SOE put the money into SWG the engine can be made to handle it. Just look at Eve Online as an example of an engine upgrade. It is not hard when you have a team to focus on it. But incorporating flight on planets into the game play is needed. Did you know that SWG has the largest "items" database for any MMO? I think SWG needs a graphic engine update first. But what about those KOTOR rumors?

I don't know about that. They somehow managed to make 32 professions and 2+ years of achievement disappear overnight.

Currently Vanguard has a reindeer for the holidays that allows you to fly anywhere. Why doesn't SWG have atmospheric flight? If they can do it in Vanguard why not SWG?
If you bothered to look on the official forums you would see the devs comment on that. The gameengine for the planets is not made with that in mind. The world in Vanguard was.
If you have difficulties understanding that, check WoW for where they allow player owned flying mounts. There is a reason why you wont see those in all the areas.
Not to mention that 'If they can do it in Vanguard why not in SWG' really shows your ignorance. Those engines have technically maybe nothing in common.

Just because the two games are based on the same Engine doesn't mean they can do the same things with out significant upgrades. It's probably a bit like Windows - Windows 2k, XP and Vista are all based on the same Engine but each sucessor offers support for stuff the older one can't.
SWG could do with a graphics update, although it still has better graphics then many of the MMO's coming out today. I don't know what all is involved with a graphics update though, but I'd imagine it would mean going through every texture file and refreshing it - something that I think would be a bigger task in SWG then EvE.
The engine in SWG is supposebly having a minor upgrade this year when they re-make the animation system so it can handle the faster paced combat. Currently, it's still only designed to handle the pre-cu combat speeds.
Because Vanguard is a newer game with a newer engine?
lol I figured you'd be the first to come to SWG's defense.
But nevertheless thats not a good enough answer. You should be demanding more from SWG, not accepting excuses.
I thought it was a fairly neutral comment actually - the best answer I could think of as to why VG got atmospheric flight so easily. I too would like to see atmospheric flight in SWG and replace the TIE vs X-Wing animation over Restuss with my own ship
I'm sure they could probably do it if they decided to spend some effort on it, it'd probably be a matter of merging the Space and Ground engines together. Probably be an expansion thing, along with combat vehicles.
That is a big IF they ever get another expansion pack.

I think it's simpler than that. I'm pretty sure the engine does not fully support three spatial dimensions. That's why you can't fall off things, etc. The only thing that makes me question this premise is that some buildings have 2 or more floors, but I'm sure there's some sort of trick to that.
So they'd probably have to replace the entire engine, something I think they're highly unlikely to do for a game that has been on its last gasp for over 2 years.
I will stick by my mantra: SWG should have been made using an upgraded Planetside engine.
There would have been vehicles and aircraft from the start, and they probably could have included direct atmosphere to space transitions (get to a certain altitude, and you port into the space zone.
FPS ranged combat without distance limitations
Melee combat could have been done in classic MMO style
Many further additions could have been made to incorporate professions, crafting, harvesting, housing, quests, PVE, etc.
Now, I don't know anything about game design, but this would have been a cool game even if it was just Planetside with SW artwork. But I would be surprised if the additional features could not be added relatively easy.

Yep I agree 100%. I think fans o f the game like yourself and people like me who will watch the developement to see if it gets better would really like the engine upgrade for a more fluid game play that can open the door for more possibilities. Plus they have 3 more programmers that have been added to the staff.

rewriting the combat system had nothing to do with modifying the engine. and still look how long THAT took them.
