Lets here your Blahs:
My biggest let down was Vanguard Saga Of Heros. After all the hype for this game and the pages upon pages of mmo philiosphy written by Brad it turns out to be more over hyped then WMD's in Iraq. This game was doomed at every level - crappy programming, Jeff Butler (lol) and Brad's emo breakdown. The saga was def out of game!
Other than that all we've seen is rehashed Eq clone after rehashed EQ clone be released. WoW is running William Shatner Ads (take a step back folks) and making a movie while I come here day after day after day reading about desensitized gamers bored out of the tree after playing the same treadmill games over and over.
I thought 2006 was a lousy year for gaming but this miracleous "2nd gen" mmo has turned into 3rd & 4th depending your perspective.
The only game two games that have captured the imagination of this 32 year old gamer has been Eve online for the utter creativity of the game and CCP's devotion to their product (boot.ini and t2 aside). BoB is on the retreat and hate mongering Goons are ruling the roost which gives great cause for 2008. I almost like Everquest 2 probably but its nothing more than the most polished age old model but sadly the tread mill gets old fast.
I have come to the conclusion that the massive multiplayer online business model is broken beyond repair. Every game maker has decided on a system that copies the other guy and spits out stupid quest after stupid quest after stupid quest.
In 2008 I'll likey remove all mmorpgs (save for eve) and focus on retro games that were written while half the game developers today were still just starting to play pokemon card games.
I remember the checkerboards in UO - they were ok - but gotta catch em all card games on line is about as dumb as playing virtual hackie sack.
If this is the future of MMORPG games COUNT ME OUT!
I signed up for mmos to play rpgs in a mmo setting - someone pm me when they make one.

Uhhg. Are we really going here again?
-------------------------
Biggest Blah for me would have to be Tabula Rasa, there have been worse this year without a doubt but none had I anticipated as much. Its like they took all the worst elements of MMORPG games and jumbled them together, added a newish combat system and released the game. They have like 25 enemy models total, and reuse them time and time again just changing their names, and very few weapon models. Higher level areas feel rushed and unfinished, even some of the lower level ones are lackluster. Logos that are supposed to tell the story about the game, yet only half of them have voice overs. It feels like a game that I was paying to beta test.
I refuse to go back to WOW, but my options are limited at the moment, I thought Pirates of the Burning Sea might be the game, but it doesn't look like it is going anywhere. Hopefully PotBS gets better at max level with pvp, only time will tell; at least for now I am getting some satisfaction with reporting bugs and helping to make the game better when it does release.
To put it shorter than you:
- all 3 next gen consoles don't have quality games like their predecessors. None is worth the buy
- Starcraft 2 didnt come out for PC. vanguard Sucked. WAR was delayed
very very bad year for gaming.

hmmm...
360 - Halo 3- biggest sales records ever and amazing game
Call of Duty 4 - amazing and best of series
Mass Effect - amazing and best BioWare RPG to date
Wii - Super mario galaxies and new Zelda game
PS3 - Not quite sure, never liked PS3 much, Resistance: Fall of Man was disappointing.. Warhawk was OK
PC - Burning crusade - more record shattering
i'm sure there are many i missed.... Orange Box, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, etc. etc. but 2007 was an amazing year for gaming, just not so much for MMORPG gaming.

I agree 100% with heerobya,MMO gaming, like its last 3 or 4 years has pretty much bombed out but PC gaming is having a fantastic year. heerobya's list hardly scratches the surface.
Orange Box
The best thing to do is start checking out some other genres aside from MMO's. You will not be disappointed. MMOs currently are and have always brought up the tail end of gaming. Maybe in the future someone will figure that out and make something a bit different.
Well, I think 2007 is the year of the console innovators for sure.
Lets see.
1) Bioshock for non-linear combat and gameplay.
2) Mass Effect for best dialogue system and diverse class system.
3) Orange Box for all titles included, especially Portal.
Oddly, enough, in 2008 we'll be seeing the Ghostbusters game that will follow in the footsteps of first two titles, having non-linear gameplay and overall good dialogue (it has Ramus and Aykroyd writing the script, and all the cast related returning to voice their characters). It just seems strange how MMO devs are not watching the console market for what players *really want*. Maybe 2008 and 2009 will be different, other than more WoW clones.
-- Brede
Unfortunately the MMO player market has spoken along with millions of others and want World of Warcraft and thats why all MMO's are trying to get similar success. Its like anything thats successful people try to copy or at least take some pages from said success.
There is a ton of good games that came out this year ...of all different types of genres. Most of the best were listed already.
Biggest problem i see as of late for MMO's aside from the copy WOW success is the fact they are rushing things. WOW came at a time when there wasnt much going on(aside from EQ2....just before christmas and had been in development somewhere around 7+ years if memory serves. Then another year at least for beta.
Course most of the companies making MMO's are little upstarts trying to make a buck...at least alot of developers are fairly new.(Then others buy them up right SOE!!) Now we have a few coming that have made games in the past and are taking time and hopefully learning from thier mistakes or things that didnt work the first time.
So hopefully in the next cycle we will see a few more quality MMO's.

Fine - if you say console games were good in 2007.
I guess I should have clarified that 2007 was a shitty year for mmorpgs but that should be implied since I'm in the general forum of a mmorpg gaming site.
I feel as many of you do. The MMOs on the market just don't do it for me anymore. I've been playing single player, and multiplayer FPS games myself. Mostly Orange Box and WinSPWW2.
Orange Box - Besides the Half-Life2 Episodes, I'm having an absolute blast with Team Fortress 2
WinSPWW2 - This is a free game that would appeal to all you war strategists out there. Brings me back to the very enjoyable days of Steel Panthers.
I'm not currently subscribed to any MMO. The last one I subscribed to was EQ2 which I rediscovered, and it was fun initally, but as I predicted, the fun only lasted about 2 months.
I tried the PotBS beta...I'll just say it was a huge letdown.
As I've stated before, I've grown tired of the whole "kill, loot, level" model that almost every single MMO has. Someone needs to break this mold with a fresh idea, or bring back to life the one or two MMOs from the past that don't follow this model.
Probably should have
I agree with you though. It really disappoints that MMO's can't pull their act together. I mean play some of the other games out there, they just knock you on your arse then you come to MMO's and its ho-hum...kill 10 rats...again.....then kill 10 adult rats then 10 giant rats....collect some flowers for a bracelet...(WTF, is this barbie online?!)
Seriously, play the trial of AC and really put some time on it, not just look at the graphics and the starter town for 15 minutes but really dig in for 2 weeks, learn about the resistances and vulnerabilities system of the mobs, how the combat actually works, the quest, the storylines, the open skill system, the freakishly weird salvage system....go to the library in Cragstone and read the history of the Dereth, the Olthoi invasions and Thorston Cragstone.
Then play some WoW/Vanguard/LotR for 2 weeks. They just don't stand up.
The sad thing is AC is 8 years old and surpasses those games on every level but visual.
It seems to me a normal year for gaming...but consumers don't want "normal" anymore. We've become ravenous users and the market is trying to keep up. Case-in-point, how many MMO's came out this year versus how many of them are actually any good? The demand is there, game makers know it, but they can't knock them out fast enough to feed our hungry appetite. World of Warcraft has raised the bar a few years ago and no one has cleared the hurtle...not even Blizzard themselves. Blizz is trying though, anyone who reads up on their development can see it. Every now and then a new feature comes out or they're hashing out the latest expansion. Sill, the consumer is screaming, "2 SLOW! WE WANT MORE NOW ftw!!!111 >_< deez games r 4 nubs..." If leet-speakers wrote code as well as they speak, the games wouldn't be fit for Vic 20 so it's hippocritical on our part when expect a game to massage our eyes eternally for $1.
Here's what I recommend. Don't buy into crappy games. Use your economic power to say "banging out a game a day is not going to work, game developers need to make a QUALITY game that focuses on their greatest goal - pleasing the customer". If we keep buying the latest and greatest, then find out it's junk, producers will continue making garbage just for the quick-hit of cash on release day.
2008 will be a big year for games because the revenues are long-lasting. Everyone is looking at Blizzard's model and wanting to emulate.

2007 has actually been one of the best years for consoles, especialy the XBox360 received a high number of high quality games.
One cant really blame companies for trying to make profitable games - that is not one of my points of contention.
The market is obviously growing by bringing in new players who haven't experienced 3 ++ years of kill 10 rats.
IMHO one of the problems is now there IS a forumula and because it works companies dont see any need to try anything new.
The disillusioned gamer is screwed because the new titles are trying to lure new players who haven't had much mmorpg experience.
I guess us old timers just need to wait for the 9 million new gamers to become as desensitized as us for there to be any big changes.
...and Guitar Hero 3 for the Wii!
Man, that's a fun game!
2007 has actually been one of the best years for consoles, especialy the XBox360 received a high number of high quality games.
Best year for consoles....?
Wii: again, new rehashes of Nintendo classics. Boring.
PS3: nothing, absolutely nothing that you cannot find on other consoles/PC and got a rating superior to 8/10
Xbox 360: Beside Mass Effect, absolutely nothing new, innovative, or exceptionnally good.
People who think 2007 has been an exceptionnaly good year for gaming weren't in the market in 1994, 2002, or 2005. It's an average-to-bad year. Consoles prices are high, exceptionnal game are scarce, novelty is dead.

I agree.
Console games were great this year? Don't care. Non-MMO PC games were great this year? Don't care. This is an MMOG website. Yes 2007 sucked for MMOs (withstanding WoWs expansion).
Vanguard could have turned that all around if they didn't suck so bad. I was pretty surprised that game blew as bad as it does.
I need to read up on Conan and WAR, but to be honest I don't expect to be shockingly excited. lol

Yea
2007 MMORPG Game of the Year - Tabula Rasa.
If you played the beta, I don't care. * Note: Beta is not the final product.
If you played the game, I don't care.
If you are playing the game and enjoying it, I don't care.
Hands down the MMORPG Game of the Year - Tabula Rasa.
If we get one solid game, like TR, each year... I would be a happy puppy whom found a new owner... EVERY YEAR.
Not much else to say, other then sitting here complaining about how other people create shitty games isn't going to improve anything, except bring more negative statistics to people who play video games.
If you feel that all the hard working people that go to college who make these games are horrible at creating games, since this is their job.
Feel free to take a course and learn how to make games.
Second finds some egnines for your game.
Third find massive ammounts of money to launch this thing.
Then convince 10 million people to play your game and SO ON....
My words to you: Good luck.
So if you still wanna sit at your computer and write on forums about how much your gaming experience is like your sexual activity: SUCKS. Then be my guest.

and cut out with the "If you don't think this has been a bad year then you must have not been..." bullshit. I have been gaming in 1994, 2002 or 2005 so you might as well drop that silly arguement.
I don't see how anyone could say 2007 was a bad year for gaming, just far too many good games out across the board, making more likely a contender for one of the better years like 2004 or 1998, and it is clearly better than weak years like 1996 or 2003.
Some examples of great games that came out this year:
PS2-Even the old workhouse had some good games this year:
God of War 2. (I personally think it is overated compared to DVC or NG, but it's hard to deny it''s quality.)
Odin Sphere (Awesome, innovative 2D side scroller, though not really mainstream.)
Persona 3 (Another great entry in the SMT line, though JRPG seem to be love or hate)
XBOX 360- After a terrible 05 and picking up some steam towards then end of 06, 360 has hit it's stride.
GRAW - More good tactical multiplayer goodness, though perhaps a bit too similar to the orignal.
Bioshock -I mean c'mon, how can a year with this game in it be bad?
Hal0 3- Again, another series I feel is overrated, but a quality game nonetheless that many enjoy
Mass Effect- Another hit from Bioware, with an amazing main quest, though bland sidequests
Call of Duty 4- Putting this in the 360 section, though it goes for PC and PS3 also. Very polished, well done multiplayer experiance with an engaging, if short, single player mode.
Guitar Hero 3- Another batch of good times from the series, with enough nice stuff added to the game to make up for the few seemingly unnecessary changes to the forumula. Also goes for pretty much all other consoles.
Orange Box- 2/5 of this already came out, but the rest is just awesome. TF is some of the most balanced class based shooter, EP 2 was very solid entry into the HF series, and Portal is just awesome. Also goes for other systems.
Rock Band- An amazing game to play with 3 other friends, really steps up the whole "air musican" genre. Also for other consoles.
Wii- Nintendo had some great hits come out this year, with many of their 1st party games making splahes.
Super Paper Mario- Awesome level design, sold gameplay, and humor throughout make this a win
Metroid Prime 3- Though the story sucks and is unneeded, the Wii controls are spot on and it picks the series up after the minor let down that was Echos.
Geometry Wars Galaxies- Just make sure to ditch the Wii controls and this game is awesome sauce
Super Mario Galaxy- While other series stagnate over time, even Zelda, Mario just keeps getting better with age, putting this into probably Game of the Year territory.
PS3- It's hard to fine good games on Ps3 that aren't also out for other consoles, but it does have a few hits.
Ratchet and Klank Future- Excellent throwback to the series roots and Ps3 exclusive to boot
Uncharted- Basically a playable summer blockbuster, not perfect but shows what consoles can now do.
I mean, just looking at console's you see tons of awesome games that came out this year, more than enough for anyone to play, and that's not going into goodness for PC, PSP, and DS. Sure, it may have be a weak year for MMO's, but then again, beyond 2004 most have been weak, though 2008 might change that. (Maybe WAR or tCoS?) The best part is 2008 is also looking up, with GTA 4, DMC 4, SC 4, SSMB and MGS 4 all due to come out (Man, that's alot of 4's).
Who cares about singler player pc games or consoles games being good or not. I still rather have awesome MMORPG where I don't have to worry about buying other games for months or even a year or years. Maybe something awesome will come out in 2008. Only 2 people really hyped about is Warhammer and AOC. Warhhamer is on top my list cause of RVR. AOC still doesn't excite me too much from the gameplay videos I have seen.
I expect more people will be disapointed though in 2008. Then people will be on the next 2 big MMORPGs which will prolly be Biowares MMO and Blizzards next MMO. As much as some people hated WOW they will prolly try it too. We will probally see a bunch more minor MMORPGs in between then too. Could be some hidden gems in them but most people go for the big named companies games.
Expec tations of people are just too high now. Ask yourself how many MMOs are you looking at for the future. Alot people I know already planning on trying a couple right now and prolly add to that once more games get into beta phase. People now days are always looking to the next game even before setting foot in the next game coming out. It makes me wander how many games some people find crap because they are already interested in other game before even playing that game and when they do they aready saying I can't wait till the next game and then they repeat it.
How long do most people subscribe to MMORPGs now days? How many MMORPGs do alot people try a year now?(assuming a few hyped one comes out that year) How many MMO games are you already interested in coming out in 2008 and on?
