Silly question, but has anyone heard anything about Directx 10 becoming available for Windows XP. I really dont want to install Windows ME v2.0.. err Vista, hehe.
I have not, and with Vista being what it is, I'm definitely content to stick with DX9, for awhile. While the screenshots with DX10 look fabulous, I still think the DX9 looks pretty darn good as well.
I would think the pressure is on to open up most of Dx10's functions to Dx9. Really the ' graphical differences' are non-existent. Dx10 is mostly just more streamlined re-write of previous Dx's, were as Dx9 and basically just piled code onto Dx8 code, and so on, so it's 'messier' then Dx10. That and it offloads a bunch more from the CPU to the GPU, where as Dx9 started doing that, it doesn't do it as much. Besides that there are virtually no differences in the graphically capability of Dx9 or Dx10. Combined with the fact that their most boasted game for Dx10 graphics, Crysis, was 'hacked' to allow Dx10 graphics in Dx9 the day the demo came out, a lot of people now know that Dx10 is as much hype as it is reality. So the pressure is there. But I think if they did make a new version of Dx10 that works on XP, they would have to admit that Vista is a failure, cause the amount of people using it would drop from 8% to like 4%. Cause I would wager at least half the folks using it now are doing so SOLELY for Dx10. Course if they don't, someone else will. Theres already a group that is working on basically bringing Dx10 to PC. Hopefully what ever 'mod' this is, it supports Age of Conan.
Edit: It doesn't help as well that virtually all the 'big name' companies that lead the graphics industry for gaming, Id Software, Valve Software and Epic Software, have all said they aren't going to really push Dx10 because they think Dx9 is still very viable and capable and has some life in it yet. Considering the whole lie of Dx10 graphics is now revealed, I don't see there being a reason at all for these guys to pretend you need Dx10 for the best graphics, just because MS throws a bunch of money at them. Note that with Crysis and such, while the Dx10 'hack' runs on Dx9, the only cards really capable of handling it are Dx10 cards lol. But even then Crysis on WinXP with the 'hack' runs FASTER then standard Dx10 on vista lol.
Good point. The grafix of DX10 are just based on the fact that it is more efficient. Just better codding essentially. To tell you the truth I think M$ realized Vista was falling when they "relaunched' the ability to get XP hehe.
Dont ask about smiley....just had an overwhelming urge to use it lol
You can get DX10 on XP. Using hacks and cracks of course.
But basically it's nothing special. Vista is pretty much a cheesed up version of XP. XP was a dumbed down less-cheesed up version of Win 2k. Win 2k rocked.
Then there's Linux... I have a lot of games working under Linux. Some of which are DX9.
If you can get DX9 working on Linux, why not DX10?
Just look around, and you'll find a nice way of getting DX10 on XP.
Or you can buy Vista. I mean, yes it's expensive. But you can always buy a piece of hardware, like a new video card, or a new system, and get a special version of vista. Not special but cheaper, it's a deal you get when buying O/S and hardware. Just comes without the manual, box, etc. You basically get the CD and an install guide.

There's nothing out that currently ports DX10 to XP fully. There is a team working on it, but I don't think they realized the complexity of it before they started and I honestly don't expect them to finish it.

It's not going to happen, this is the only reason gamers have to switch to Vista and M$ isn't going to give that up.
This is from another forum, but if M$ introduces DX10 for XP I will feed 10 homeless guys for a week.

There's already things out there. There's many people working on it. Just today I found a beta version of DX10 for XP.
Was this a M$ version of DX10 for XP or a "some guys in a basement" version of DX10 for XP?
