Hybrid class?

Hi, I'm downloading the trial and I'm wondering what classes could be considered "hybrid" classes, or classes that have a varied kind of gameplay? (a la shaman or druid from WoW, as most people should have played it)

I'm thinking captains and loremasters would fit the bill, but I'm not sure.

You pretty much nailed it.  Both of those classes are pretty good at DPS and healing, and have abilities that vary a bit depending on what pet you have out.  The captain can also tank (and is pretty good at it, but not as good as a guardian), while the LM is very good at crowd control and debuffs (best in the game), with some power management abilities (ala an Enchanter in EQ) thrown in.

I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.

I find the captain to be quite the hybrid class. One thing to note is that being a hybrid means you don't excel and any one thing. The captain could probably be most called a buffer, though he deals out decent damage, and has some nice "oh crap!" skills to save a wipe or simply rez.

The Loremaster is probably a hybrid as well, though I haven't played one very much myself. I have grouped with a few high level LMs and I must say, their skill set and utility is amazing, so if you're interested in the long haul with an LM, you will be rewarded.

That's not to say the captain (or any other class for that matter) isn't well off in the high levels, but LMs in particular seem to be well balanced within their role.

We have the opposite experience, I've played LM a lot and barely touched captains (never got one past ten).  Probably why I forgot to mention that Captains are fantastic buffers, in addition to being OK at DPS, healing, and tanking

My main is a lvl 50 LM and the biggest problem with the class is that it takes awhile to get the good skills that "really" make this class.  I wish some of the crowd control abilities were given at slightly lower levels.

If you want to have fun right out of the gate with a multi-purpose class go with the Captain.  If you want to rock in end-game crowd control and Monster Play (PvP) go with the Lore-Master.

The captain is indeed a nice class to play and I can certainly recommend it. After all I play one. ;)

However, he doesn't get his defining skills out of the box too and has to wait until level 20, 25 to get at least an idea of what his role will be. For example he gets his first pet at level 10, his halberd around level 15 if I remember right and heavy armour at level 20. Around that time he gets his first healing shout and his first revival skill too.

During the lower levels he's just a somewhat weak melee class that happens to produce an awful lot of noise. ;) He's still fun to play at those levels but you need to give him at least 20, 25 levels to be able to judge the potential of the class.

I maintain this List of Sandbox MMORPGs. Please post or send PM for corrections and suggestions.

That's exactly why I've never gotten very far with a Captain.  I was too impatient with it.  Got up to 11 or 12 and deleted.  Plan to try one again once I get done with my LM.

I agree with this sentiment. My captaining became a true joy, particularly in groups, once I got above 30, and the month of the captain really rounded out the class nicely.

Oh, and your comment about "an awful lot of noise" tickled me greatly.
