Just discovered CoH, have basic questions

fizzle322fizzle322 Member Posts: 723

Got bored one night and got CoH, wow what a great MMO.

So my Fire/EM Blaster is level 5 now and I have a bunch of random questions.

1)  It possible to get the highest jump + the fastest run speed on a single character?

2) Does Paragon City have day and night?

3) Does Origin matter other than missions and that useless close-range attack you get?

4) How do you get a Trenchcoat?

5) Am I understanding correctly that Reputation is the game currency?

6) Is it useful to join a supergroup?

7) Do people group or just solo everything?

8) Can Fire/EM Blasters still solo at 50?

So far I am loving this game. Tons of fun.

Peace

    answers for ya.

    1. You can take Super Speed and Super Jump on the same character. But, it will not make you move faster while mid-jump.

    2. Yeah it does have day and night. I believe it changes every 45 mintues or so, not positive about the exact time, but it is fairly short.

    3. Origin decides what dual-origin or single origin enhancements you can use.

    4. Trenchcoat is the three month vet reward. Just stay with the game 3 months and you get it.

    5. Reputation is the difficulty setting, the money is called Influence. In CoV its Infamy.

    6. Sometimes yes, just make sure you join a good super group. Good being one that is active and shares your veiws of the game.

    7. Teaming seems to be the main way to go. While teamed you get more xp and will make more freinds, maybe even find a good super group.

    8. yeah, any AT can solo in the game, if built right and you take your time to learn the ins and outs of the powersets.

    6. I would say yes. at the Supergroup base you can heve teleporters to almost all the game zones.  One of the veteran rewards is a Teleport to SG base option. It makes getting around easier.  There are also storage devices for base salvage, Inspirations, and enhancements.

    Glad your enjoying the game.

1- Yes, but while you jump the run speed doesn't help you at all.  Most PvP players use both of these.

2- Yes, and some monsters spawn only at night.

3- I always pick the same origin and never suffer from it in anyway.

4- 3 month veterans reward.  The only veteran reward which is annoying to not have on a powerplayer basic is the 1 year veteran reward which grants you an extra attack.  This attack is outstanding at level 1.  It is decent at level 15.  It is cute and merely situational at 32+.

7- Most peoples groups, but there are many soloers and they seem extremely happy with the game.  You can earn everything you need as a level 50 uber toon by soloing, except a second rate enhancement which would require you to either group or buy at the auction house.  This second rate enhancement is still usefull for the powers you didn't slots or if you need raw % to finish a few powers, so you could use about 5-10 of them on a maxed character.

8- Some peoples will say they are the best soloers in the game.  Blasters are the best damage dealer...and fire is definitely a LOT of damage.  They are squishies...but when everything die fast and at range, did you need to be anyless squishie?  Scrappers are the best rounded characters for solo on hero side, but blasters are definitely at least the 2nd best...and blasters solo better then any character in any other MMO as far as I know (didn't play them all, but I play most of them).

Sure PvP chars often take both SS and SJ.  Some people try to go cheap get a travel power lite via sprint and powers increase run speed/jump passively like you see in Super reflexes.  However these tend to lead to very builds, so choose you power set carefully.
    2) Does Paragon City have day and night?
    Yes.
    3) Does Origin matter other than missions and that useless close-range attack you get?
Not really.  It affects your Enchancements, but in the end its all the same its just what store you go to.  However there are a few powersets where that origin attack does matter.  For example Oil Slick Arrow can be lit on fire via a fire or energy attack.  The taser is an energy attack.  So if you lack fire/energy from your attacks origin can help.  Also they can be useful for pulling if you have no ranged attack
    4) How do you get a Trenchcoat?
6 month reward.  Chekc website for full list of vet rewards
    5) Am I understanding correctly that Reputation is the game currency?
Influence and infamy is money yes.
    6) Is it useful to join a supergroup?
Yes, although you can make your own.  You get teleporters and storage and other useful things.  IN addition to the normal benefits of having people willing to help
    7) Do people group or just solo everything?
Both.  You can solo almost anything other than an AV (and some super solers solo many AV).  However due to the nature of CoX people group often because its fun, you get more bosses and somewhere around 4-5 people is supposedly optimal xp.  Since it not big deal either way you find that you can recruit people who are soloing pretty easy unless they are busy and you find you get tells for recruitment fairly often.
    8) Can Fire/EM Blasters still solo at 50?
Blasters are special.  Frankly I will tell you the truth.  You will have a lot of trouble due to status effects.  If you are starting out I would reccomend something else.  Blasters can solo.  And if you manage to solo to 50 as a balster you will be a very good soloer.  Its possible but it takes alot of finesse and preparation and knowledge.   However it will be much easier as a scrapper or tank or controller or a good defense build (triple dark or storm/dark).
If you really want to blast I recomend going either dark/dark, storm/dark, or storm/sonic defender.  They do less damage but defenders debuffs are far stronger.  So a sonic defender starts doing very good damage once the sonic -ressistance debuffs kick in.  Also every wants defenders.  But be careful some idiots think storm defenders are healers even though they heal worse than a scrapper with "heal other".
Or possibley you could go as an Ice blaster.  Your main problem as a blaster is two fold you gotta burn em down or you die.  That can be ok espeically with EM and knockdown etc.  But at you get into the 30's stuns and sleeps etc will just plain kill you.  An ice blaster has holds so you cna possibly hold them before they hold you.  or possible sonic with screech and sir song.
My storm/sonic defender usaully solo with complete stealth via steamy mist/super speed and then sleeps and stun with screech/siren song.  But he has stealth and if thing hit the fan the baddies get big ole tornado stunnign them and throwing them around and doing a ton of damage.  Whereas a blaster pretyt much has to pop a break free or die if plan A goes down the tubes, if they even have a plan A.
Similarly a DDD or Storm/dark defender can make things so inaccurate that there holds just miss and Dark blast (defender only blast set) has a couple of cones so they do decent AOE.  And also they get an AOE stun, as does storm so they can stack two mag 2 stun to stuns bosses (storm sonic can only stack a single target stun with thunderclap).
So in order to solo as a non scrapper/tank you need some way to completely bamboozle your foes since against things like rikti you can get stunned or mezzed or held at every spawn.  Scrapper/tanks get status effect protection.  Controllers get pets to soak it and also get holds and aoe hold/ stuns etc.  Certain defender builds (but not all) also get enough stuff to stick to themn before you stick to them.  Only Ice Blast really has the potential to to deal with this and even that is great.  So a blaster has to bring a whole lot of break frees and if he runs out good night.

I would also reccomend a Fire/Storm  or Fire/kin or maybe Illusion/storm controller.  The do very nice damage.  Its not nuking type damage but with containment things like hotfeet really add up and once you get the pets + storm pets or pets + fulcrum shift you are a madhouse of crazy whirling or burning destruction.  Plus phantom army tanks like nobodies business.  I never finished my fire/storm but I really wanted to see what cornering something with bonfire and throwing tornado at it would do.  All these take a lot of power and kin is pretty squishy.
