I've tried a fair bit of client-based MMORPGs. And most of them are OKAY. What makes them real crap is they're repetitive and I have doing things over and over just to get one goal accomplished. It's not economical to me and never shall be.
I don't mind repetitiveness to a point. Obviously, in most client-based MMOs, there's going to be some sort of grinding. Fair enough. You have to do such things as levelling some time. And if you don't, you can't get into the higher levels to get better equipment/weapons. But I do mind it when it gets to the point that it takes one bloody week to raise one level (this is an overexaggeration naturally).
I am not a hardcore gamer. I do not play games everyday. Because gaming is not my first priorirty. Generally, my average playing time is anywhere between 2 and 6 hours. Which, is not as much as I used to play (anywhere between 4 and 12 hours). I am a casual gamer at best.
The only MMO which I've ever been addicted to is RuneScape. And it's crap and boring. Jagex Ltd. can't make an MMORPG to save their lives. If I knew how, I bet I and a group of my mates could make one twice as good as bloody RuneScape. And in Java too (note that RS graphics are an insult to any good Java programmer, Java is very much capable of producing very nice graphics, unlike RS').
I was addicted to RS not because of it's graphics, but because of it's gameplay. Yes, it's repetitive, but you don't just have to hunt creatures 24/7 to get anywhere. You can cut trees, mine, make runes, farm, make a house and more. Most client-based MMORPGs do not have this. Again, I say fair enough. But what I would like is if they at least had a mini-game or two in them.
And not PvP mini-games. I'm not a fan of Player vs. Player. Mainly because I suck at it and it's a chore to get any good, and also because I find it pretty boring, to tell the truth. I am a fan of PvE - Player vs. Enviroment. I like beating the AI to a pulp. So sue me.
As for graphics? I've played RS. So graphics obviously, can't mean much to me. However, in saying that, I do not like games like MapleStory with 2D stupid-looking graphics or cell graphics. I don't like games with cartoon style graphics. But graphics that look "real." They do not have to look realistic or be modern-style graphics, but I'd like them to at least be decent enough to play.
I also prefer games which are fairly easy and not too hard to level. I don't want to play something such as Guild Wars and level up in like 2 to 7 days. That's just bloody pathetic. Even WoW would take me at least 2 months to get to the max, and that's about right for me. Though I can handle not being capped out after a year of playing as long as I'm having fun.
I also like a game with indepth quests and not something you just have to do one task for. Starting out that's fine, but when I level up I don't want quests that make me go and kill X enemy X amount of times. That's boring and repetitive. Period.
Okay, so to conclude it all (if you even read this far down): I prefer PvE over PvP. Gameplay over graphics. Fun over repetitiveness and grindfests. Something I can play and say "I'll get off in a few minutes" and then boom it's 3am (well, more like 6am for me lol).
And finally. Here are the games I have played/tried.
RuneScape (I'm trying to get out of the RS habit)
12Sky (currently still playing, but it's too repetitive and it's quest-system I don't even understand...)
Last Chaos (major grindfest, this one just sucks)
MapleStory (sucks, sucks and even more sucks)
RF Online (I didn't find it very newbie-friendly, too hard to play)
World of Warcraft (I'm looking for an F2P, though if I could I'd play this)
Rappelz (not bad, better than Last Chaos at least)
9Dragons (this I kinda like, I haven't even done much hunting on this, mainly quests which are usually delivery-type ones)
Dungeon Runners (also good but instanced dungeons are annoying as well as quests that are basically the same thing over and over)
That's the MMORPGs I've played. I hope someone can come up with a game for my tastes. And yes, I know I'm a picky sort of person. Also, if you think there's a game on the list (that I have played) that you think I should try out again, feel free to suggest it but please say why.
I'd also appreciate it if the game developer lets me register in New Zealand... Signing up with gPotato for Rappelz was a pain as for some screwed up reason, it didn't support my region (New Zealand) but my mate half-way across the country could sign up for FlyFF.
All help is much appreciated.

Ha ha ha!
You and me both!
I had a post recommending a FPS but it was moved to Off-topic. I bought both UT3 and CoD4. I like them both a lot (I think UT3 is underrated) but CoD4 owns. Get it. I love it. Intense. Hard. Challenging. Exciting. You will be happy you got it, and the amount of people that play it daily is ENORMOUS. It is free to play online too after you buy the game.

WoW and fast food = commercial successes.
I neither play WoW nor eat fast food.
Call of Duty 4 got GameSpy's Game of the Year 2007 lol. I've been told it's a decent game, but it isn't an MMO, just note that. The only MMOFPS I know of is GunZ: The Duel and I only play it for fast-paced action. Here's how I see it.
Quake 3 Arena owns GunZ: The Duel
Unreal Tournament ONE owns Quake 3 Arena
Conclusion: I like UT1 but I no longer have it, so meh... Btw, COD4 wouldn't work on my laptop lol. I only have a 1.46GHz Dual-Core CPU, not 1.8, so there'd be some lag.
I've got the "perfect" game for you... "Perfect World" heh. I'm series in this though.
Okay there is pvp after level 30 and you can't really do a whole lot to prevent being pvp if someone "really" wanted to get you. But like in L2, people that gank go red. Meaning anyone is free to kill them without penalty to themselves and on top of that, people with red names have a high chance to drop items. So there is a deterrent for senseless ganking. Anyway if someone did attack you and killed you. No biggy, release and go back or find another location. There are no penalties to you if you don't fight back. And no gain for them.
If you aren't into grinding out 1k boars to level then this game... is for you. As its heavily quest based. Odd for an Asian game I know. Although if leveling on quest isn't for you, xp on mob killing isn't so bad.
There is much to do in the game. More so than other F2p games and even more than most P2p. There are no restrictions on what you are allowed to craft or harvest. If you want to craft armor, potions, weapons, etc. you are allowed to do it with the same character if you want to spend the pts on it. Or just mail your craft goods to an alt. Or find a friend to transfer. So you can use all of your pts on fighting skills. Oh, these skill points are gained with completion of quest or mob killing. They are separate from your attribute points you get with leveling. So technically after maximizing your level you could max all of your skills, crafting and combat alike with out gimping your characters fighting abilities at all.
Here is something about the game you might like. Guilds can occupy large territories in the game. Bonuses are given to the guild owning the zone. More xp, coin, etc. And although these are fought with siege and ruthless pvp... it's controlled for the most part and as long as your guild leader doesn't demand everyone take part in it, you wont have to. But it can be fun even for the most passive people at times. Also I've never been in a guild that required everyone to pvp. Just have to pick a guild that fits your style of play.
Hm... what else. Oh, the landscape looks great. Graphics are better than any f2p game you're likely to have seen. Hell, I'd say they are better than WoW and on par with L2 if not better.
The classes are all quite solid and different. You have your basic healer, tank, caster, but they are open to customization to a degree. Example would be that healers can do some major nuking if you wanted. The pet class can go either nuker or transform into a fox and be a light tank with some nice melee. These pets are charmable mobs that stay with you and level along with you. You also get to train their skills.
Also, the elves (Healer and archer classes) get to fly from the start. While all others get some sort of flying mount at lvl 30. Flying controls are very smooth just the same as the swimming. Fights are in the air and water and land. Nice huh?
As for the item mall/shop ... none of the items are gear to make you stronger than those that don't buy. They are costumes, inventory expansions, bundles of craft resources (for the lazy, as it isn't difficult to harvest your own). The only advantage the item shop gives other than more inventory for the pack rat, are these scroll like items that heal you every 8 seconds when you're low on health or power and its only because the normal item stores 4-40k or so hps healed, while the shop version goes up to 400k or so.
Yeah... I could go on some more, but I think that's enough typing for now. One more thing, controls are awsd or point and click. Both work well.
These flying mounts I have seen videos of lol. And they do look cool. As for it being quest-based on an Asian game, that's quite surprising but I like it. Means less of a bloody grindfrest for my brain to handle lol. Thanks, I'll go try it out.
What server are you on and whats your IGN?
Maybe you can help a brother and some others out that are thinking about joining the game. Its good to get people motivated in terms of trying a new f2p game. Personally i think all f2p games are about the same more or less what makes the difference is the people you play with if you get some friend to play with that help you out and whatnot then you have a lot more fun and the grind is liveable. Makes sense too when you consider some of the territorial aspects you describe.
----ITS A TRAP!!!----
I definitely agree with you there. At the moment, I'm trying out Perfect World. It's not bad but it starts off a bit slow, if I actually had someone to play with (my mate can't download as a 2gb download isn't good for him lol) then I'd be fine.
I'm willing to play any game as long as it's with a party really. Okay, not ANY game. But the games on my list I could play again with a group (minus a few as I can't download them again until my bandwidth resets, as I've only got like 3gb left lol).
If I were to play WoW, it'd be simple. As both my cousins play. One of which, plays fairly often (search www.xfire.com/profile/majinbuu1023) lol.
EDIT: My IGN is Psion and Lazeka, respectively. Psion is my Human Mage and Lazeka my WereBeast Warrior lol. As for server, I just chose Oracle as it was the first on the list lol. I'm willing to change servers and create a new character if need be, I'm not that high a level to care yet lol.
i dont really like f2p games but outta some research i heard the best f2p games are at igg.com
