What games do you all think are at the top at this point in time ?

I use the word "top" loosely because in my opinion there isnt to much to get very excited about and I am asking this question for games that are out , not that are coming out

I am sure this question has been raised before for but I am new to here and would like to know what you all have in mind for games you feel are decent enough to put a bit of time into.

Atm I play a few kinda silly games that are free but for now fun enough to play once in a while till something better comes along

I play Dungeon Runners, Tabula Rasa, and I am finding I like  Exsteel which seems strange but I do :) I have accounts for WoW, EQ2, EQ1, LoTR, SWG, Planetside, and Vangaurd.

Thanks

I am also playing Tabula Rasa and that is about it for mmos.  I am kinda dissapointed with mmos right now, after having played them all pretty much.  The only other games that I am playing right now are Civilization 4 and Thw Witcher ( what a great game ).  I will propably go back to either DDO or LotRO to see what those are like now.

WoW is obviously #1 in terms of subs and profitability.  From the census sites though it seems that 70-80% of their subs are in Asia though; I'd put their share of the US and Euro markets at closer to 50%, still #1 but not by the huge margin all their fanboys are trying to promte.  I don't care about Asia, I don't have any problems with them but their tastes in games are different from mine (and your average Western gamer)

From my own experiences I would gather that the majority of gamers in US & Europe are looking for something new that's both 'good' and 'not WoW' and have been for about 18 months now.  New games in 2007 failed to deliver on these.  2008 looks like it'll be a lot better.  If WAR even comes close to living up to the hype it could take the #1 spot in US/Europe pretty effortlessly, similar to how WoW dethrothoned EQ a few years ago, and for the same reason.

While I don't think AOC will pull in huge numbers simply because market for 'sandbox' MMOs is a lot smaller than  the mainstream kind, if it's good I could see a lot of people going over from AC and Eve (those who like the sandbox but aren't into SF quite so much).  We haven't got much good info on AOC so far though, so I'm not holding my breath.

    That all depends on taste.

Some say lineage others wow others Lotr others VG others GW so asking what are top games at moment.

If you look at sales only 2 sold by millions wow and lineage2 but are they top games hmm maybe maybe not veryone have his or hers own opinion about that.

Result of this sort of topics is like so many similar topics everybody reply with his own favorite.

may I also add that some of the older MMORPGs are finding themselves in a bit of a resurgance. This is mainly due to a large number of the WoW playerbase is burning out of that game and there really isnt any game of WoW calibre released at this time.

Because of this many players are going 'retro' and revisiting games they enjoyed BW (Before Warcraft). Games like Daoc and AC have had an influx of old players who are having a great time fighting in thier old stomping grounds.

    1. Ryzom
    2. EVE Online
    3. Horizons
    4. Tabula Rasa
    5. Vanguard

Of course, this list is utterly subjective. Of its occupants, only EVE Online is anywhere near a "top" in reality. This list is merely an expression of my answer to the question of which MMOs I think are worth putting time into. Personally, the only one I feel is truly worthwhile is Ryzom. Everything else feels wrong, pointless, inferior, etc. *spoiled*

I think 2007 belongs to the single player market so far. Portal, TF2, Bioshock, Crysis, Mass Effect, Super Mario Galaxy, and so forth have totally pummeled the MMO market for eye balls and wallets. Go figure, then again I swear the developers most MMO development firms are hiring are complete morons (from the fact most of the MMO titles that have been released this year all suffered from heap space memory leaks so far).

In the end, only two I could say that are worth mentioning: EVE for a relatively smooth release of Trinity despite the one bug and LOTRO for a smooth launch and steady fleshing out of top level skills for all classes.

Totally agree. Single player games pwned  every mmo that came out this year which is so majorly disappointing for mmo games and I see it continuing in 2008. AOC and WAR get way too much hype.If the hype don't kill these 2 games then the dx10 versions will. Aion already being labeled as an asian grind mmo so I don't know how appealing that will be for people but it does look nice. I wouldn't reccomend any mmos to anyone this year. I'm waiting for Guild Wars 2 and for Bioware to announce their new mmo game.

Exteel is like crack, ain't it?  At first, you think it's a dumb idea and you won't ever do that again..  Then you decide to give it another try..  And it becomes an obsession.

Playin Exteel (its really is like crack) freestyle basketball, drift city.  There's sorta a theme to what I enjoy at the moment and its skill based gameplay in my mmo type games.  I can't say any of them would qualify as a true mmo but more of a mmo hybrid but together the 3 give me more entertainment than anything I've played since SWG pre-suck.

Guild Wars has sold 4 million copies...apparently exceeding Lineage's sales.

I have to agree, The single player RPG's are booming this year I mean with titles like "The Witcher" and so on I have really been donateing my time to the SPRPG's more so than MMO's because they tend to be a bit more open ended lately and replayability is awesome for most games..Oblivion to me is a immense game and there is a good title for Replaying ...its different most of the time and the graphics and play are exceptional I know it didnt really deliver what it promised but still its a great game I have played many many SPRPG'S this year and still am and plan to buy more in 08. Props to SPRPG'S :)

Sorry but Warcrack is not all everyone makes it out to be, its repetitive to no end and from the begining its this way ....yes yes I know all MMO's are repetitive ....but sorry to say Warcrack takes the cake. and I am not one for instances I think that idea sucks to be blunt . Its forced grouping and I think that is just stupid raiding and grouping isnt for everyone and even if it was for some forceing them to group when they dont want to is just ludicrous.....Blah blah blah..youve heard it all before.

If I were going to say there was a game worth the money I would say we are all going to have to wait :) for the new year to see what it brings......

WoW released Burning Crusade in 2007, so I'd say that WoW is still firmly on top of the MMORPG world.

Lord of the Rings Online and Tabula Rasa have both been successful, not huge or anything, but definetly successful.

Besides MMOs... Halo 3 shattered sales records and has more players online per day then most games could even dream of, so I'd say H3 is at the top of console gaming.

Throw in Mass Effect, Call of Duty 4, The Orange Box, Rock Band and a few others....

and overall it was a fairly good year for gaming.

Many MMO players feel that nothing good came this year with AoC and WAR both being delayed, still no signs of life from Darkfall, the cancellation of Gods and Heroes etc...

But I think 2008 will be a better year for MMO gaming specifically. WAR, AoC, Spellborn, maybe even Aion etc. and 2008 will be a good year for the MMO. Not to mention another WoW expansion on the horizon.

Definately,  like AoC has gotten alot of hype.  And probably one of the coolest MMO's ive ever seen : Aion is coming in the near future

all i can say this far is that i have been really disapointed in every mmorpg nowadays.. theres nothing that catches my eye and those that make me want to try it, disapoints me even more. but im sure there will someday be something even for me... but now, hell with the mmorpg's; hell with you

With my list, I am not going to include the Free2Play games.  I am also going to stick to the games that are more popular in North America.  I am most familiar with those.  I am going to TRY to be objective as possible and even include games I do not personally enjoy.

    1.  World of Warcraft

Even though it is starting to get a little dated, you have to include it.  A lot of people really enjoy it.  It has brought a ton of new people into the MMORPG community and has united a lot of people with diverse playstyles under one title.  It is starting to get a little stagnant now becuase of lack of content.  However, once WotLK is realease it will probably pick back up.

    2.  Guild Wars

This title is getting a little old as well, but it is still very popular.  A lot of people are waiting on the sequel.

    3.  LOTRO

This title did not do as well as people hoped, but it has still done pretty well.  It is young and lacks content, but it is still a top-teir MMORPG.  It will be interesting to see if they are able to maintain thier subscriber base.

    4.  EVE Online

Ever since this title has launched it has been growing.  It is bigger now than ever.  It has really provided a long term home for a lot of players who enjoy open PVP and territory control.  In my opinion, EVE Online should be one of the models for launching, maintaining, and growing small/niche games.

    5.  EQ2

Even though the game started off pretty bad, SOE really turned it around.  It is going to be interesting to see if Vanguard eats into the numbers once it gets turned around.

    Honorable Mentions

    CoX

This is an older game with dated graphics, but it is still very popular.  The game seems to be dieing off a little right now.  I hope the developers do not concentrate so hard on Marvel Online that they forget about CoX.

"Those who dislike things based only on the fact that they are popular are just as shallow and superficial as those who only like them for the same reason."

Seems like we've been seeing a trend where every new MMO fails to meet expectations.  Proof that MMO fans are tired of the same old crap?  We'll see.  If the 2008 crop follows the same trend, things could get interesting.  WOW can't hold on to their subs forever, so what the hell are all those players going to play once they get burnt out?  Another WOW clone?  Not likely.  Like I said, should be interesting.  Maybe some of the smaller budget MMO's will be sleeper hits in the next couple years...

I think some of todays top games would have to be:

World of warcraft-This not only having the most sold copies of the original and expansion, it also has the most player subscribtions. The fan base before WoW was released was already huge from all the RTS games and books that Blizz had put out. Not to mention this game is very solo friendly unless you want all the epics and good loots.

Everquest II-I honestly haven't played EQ2 as much as I'd like to. I know this game is good and has tons of potential and things to do for each level, I just haven't found my place in the game yet or a good guild to roll with. I've noticed a friendly community, lots to do at each level, awesome guild features, good crafting system, auction house, and alot of classes Plus PvP.

Some others that are on todays top that I haven't had a chance to play

    LOTRO

    Lineage II

    Vanguard

    ---------------------------------------------
    WoW
    -Rhalon 85 B.E. rogue
    -Rhalon 81 UD Mage
    -Doneski 85 Orc death knight

"Everyones life has a beginning and an end, No one can change that."-Hiko
"If you wish to taste the ground, then feel free to attack."-Kenshin Himura
