Man, I never thought I'd finally be so sick of SOE that I'd quit EQ/EQ2 for good. Well, I have. EQ is the best game ever made most likely, and they refuse to give us a classic server like we want. (If we really need it is a different scenario altogether and beyond the scope of my rambling here.) EQ2 has been turned into a soloists orgasm. EQ1 has been turned into a raiding jihad. I refuse to be reminded of how much fun I USED to have years ago instead of focusing on doing fun stuff now.
I have high hopes for AoC, I pray for a mature rating. I am a full grown man now and I don't care to be pandered to like a child anymore. Saving a kids toy from a bee is not fun, a la EQ2. I want dark story lines, I want sexual content, I want a game made for ADULTS, not kids. I want a group-centric game like EQ1 (and EQ2 for that matter) used to be. I want what Vanguard said it would be. Note to other MMO Dev's, STOP TRYING TO BE WOW. There are hundreds of thousands of people who refuse to play that shite that want a quality, in depth, GROUP CENTRIC, mature gaming experience.

As long as it's not 100% group REQUIRED, I'm with you.
no way should it be required.
Soloing should be much less "efficient" then grouping, thus at least creating a need for grouping. Never-the-less I completely agree with OP. EQ1 was probably the best MMO i have played (i quite shortly after Luclin), and I have VERY high hopes for this game. I think this will be my last MMO that i will try and/or play.
Last I heard is that a lot of the 'sexual' material is being stripped from the USA version. the European versions will have much more explicit content IM afraid.
Torrential
Torrential: DAOC (Pendragon)
Awned: World of Warcraft (Lothar)
Torren: Warhammer Online (Praag)
Goto say I believe the sexual stuff is more in a story telling way, no action or what not, just alot of sexual references and innuendo. Prob find alot of that missing along with maybe gore levels in the German version.
U.S. client will most likely just have a few cover ups of some pixellated nipples. Any nudity in any version is all top half of the body. Its not a full on explicit visual or worded or anything like a porn novel!
God willing, Adult storylines and nudity that works with the world is good. "Sexual content" to get your jollies off in an action adventure based MMORPG is ridiculous. MMO Pornography in an action adventure based game to me, personally wouldn't really produce the community nor the aesthetic value everyone probably thinks it would.
forsure! This definately isn't a Leisure Suit Larry MMO with 70's pron music.
Lets hope the Grouping is done properly and is free flowing.
It looks like with AoC its going to be a fresh start for alot of people, especially when it comes to combat and its different approach it encompasses.
I hope AoC takes the way of DAoC. The potential for soloing was there. You could do it if you wanted to and you could make headway exp wise. Grouping however was better, it was faster, more efficient. It was also a bit more fun because there were other people with whom you could joke around with and make time fly by.
No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-
I agree that grouping should be encouraged. I played and loved EQ1 and then went to wow and loved it also. But then after i got sick of it and quit i realized what i missed the most was the grouping and great community in EQ1.
I remember my guild in EQ1 working together for so long just to get keyed for VT. And grouping with people and having such a good time just chatting.
Soloing should be applicable but it should not be made to where it is the preffered way to lvl. Why would i play an MMO if i didnt want to play with other people?
I think one thing that has shut down grouping in the last few MMO is the way they do questlines. Say you get a few quests and they are at points A.B and C. You run off and "solo" them and in a short time youre done with those areas. So in reality if you want to group you need to either wait on someone to get the same quest or randomly meet someone there doing the same thing.
I'm sure a lot of your are familiar with the "camps" in EQ1. Say, Orc 1? Orc 2? The Stairs in Plane of Lightning? Even though it was a bit of a grind, if they could somehow make areas like that. Where you could depend on people to be there and actually have a bunch of choices of actual spots on a map. Where could go and fight for a few lvls instead of just "this zone is for 30-40."
But also dont get me wrong, quest lines are very important to RPG's and i think they should always be relied upon to move the story and for immersion. But not to the effect that if you are not questing you are going to be falling behind. Part of what makes a great MMO is the community. And if players dont need to rely on each other except in raids then its not going to create a good community. Youve all seen in in WoW. Depending upon less players to progress in a game makes it more of a Single Player chat room doesnt it?
Yeah... I'm done paying for chat rooms. I stuck around in WoW for longer then I should but then just ended up adding the people from my friends list to my msn and talked there. Most of them are done with wow as well..
Same happened with DAoC. In the end I was playing it just so that I could stay in touch with certain people. Eventually everybody moved over to msn or ICQ or what have you and stopped playing.
From now on when I realize I'm just logging on for chatting I'm done.

I am still playing EQ2 because it still has content after 2 years. Its grey content but still fun.
One thing we should be aware of is that not the companies (well not 100%) turn games into raid jihaad or solo orgasms. The players do it. EQ2's solo content is fun to do with others. I only played WoW for 4 weeks in open beta and it was not that bad as i hear it is today. The problem might be that it is very hard to please and challange players without annoying the one or the others.
I guess thats why a lot of us want an mature/adult quality game. But maybe the old days are gone forever....
