Subscriber Base * Concurrency Rate / Players Per Cluster = Clusters Needed
or
100,000 * 20% / 2,000 = 10
We're definitely not interested in having too many servers, for both gameplay and financial reasons. We can bring new servers online pretty quickly if need be, thankfully. I'm hoping I have to triple my infrastructure before summer
180,000 * 20% / 2,000 = 18 Servers
That equates to up to 180,000 subscribers at launch with the hope of triple or over 500000+ (0.5 million) before summer.
OK the illustration assumes full servers but even at 50% = 90,000 more than enough to make FLS a healthy profit.
Ultimately the proof will be in the pudding & i hope Potbs will be a success.
I've been hearing more bad things than good things about this game (haven't yet judged it myself)... knowing that, if FSS were to release say... 4 servers, it would be bad publicity and would allow the naysayers' voices to be even louder than they already are. Companies have PR departments for a reason, and believe me... they do things to prevent negative press.
I'll wait til release to make a decision about it. Also, if you want accurate numbers on pre-orders, wait for the NPD results.
Oh... but I dont think that FLS would care what the naysayer would say if there was 4 servers on release.
You know they did this games for those that enjoys it, not the other way around. I think FLS been pretty clear with that. So if it would be 4 or 18 servers is most likely actually based on what they think the game will sell.
This game will not have a direct competitor since there is no other mmo quite like this one, ok Pirates of the Carribean, but that doesnt count since its nothing like PotBS, ok maybe Eve Online, but that doesnt count either since its Space.
I am digging the game for the last few weeks and I must say, I am having a great time with it.
Most of those who are going to play in my guild are waiting for release. The reason is not as much being afraid of burning through the content as that setting up the economy is pretty intense, and they don't want to do it again only to be wiped again (been around since closed beta, had wipes before, not interested in more).
No idea what the population is going to be like in live, but I trust FLS are not just pulling numbers out of a hat.

I really dont think that's going to happen, the game is way too repetitive to have any long lasting appeal.
Repetitive? All a matter of perspective I suppose. I've spent roughly the same amount in PotBS closed and open beta as I have in those for Tabula Rasa. By the end of TR, I had no desire to ever see the game again, even though I hadn't played beyond lvl 36. In PotBS, I'm still feeling excited.
Really a bad time for people to be online, people are spending time with friends and fam right now.. the game will launch on the 7 - preboarding. and totaly on the 22.
Only a few months after that will everyone see if there server numbers will be to small. but like others said there game is unique from WOW and EVERQUEST and all other games.. there are no other pirate games. or ship games out there that are MMO. only one close is the disney game but people over 10 years old will want more from a game then the movie ripoff. its designed to make more money from the movies. and for children to have fun in a MMO type setting thats SAFE from all adult type content. You CANT even turn off the text filters for swearing in that game.

Is it my mistake that I am 35 years old and want to play a game that is a bit different?
Just curious....
That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!

It's befuddling how we differ so much on the opinion of TR and yet agree so much on the opinion of PotBS.For me, between the two of them, I am pretty well set for gaming for a looooooong time. I always did respect your opinion about TR though, because you seemed to deliver it nicely without bashing the playerbase.
Are you sticking with Blackbeard for release Linna?

We're trying to make up our minds as a guild. We play Spanish, as it's friendlier to those who don't PVP (less affected by red circles), but that means we need to go where the Spanish have a good PVP presence, as I don't fancy the idea of having to defend our newbie ports all the time from the hordes who go British. I currently favor Rackham, based on who's going there. We'll see what the rest think of that.
Blackbeard is a bit iffy. I think it may be hugely overcrowded by people who played closed beta there, and want to stay with the familiar.

I'm pretty sure the numbers of servers at release are based on pre-orders they received. Most people I know who played the beta are returning and many of our friends from WOW, Lotr and EQ2 are going to give it a try.
This game has a pretty good appeal to people that like RvR, Pirates and a complex economics system. Is there things they can improve on, sure, but what game doesn't? Some distractors have complained about the amount and type of loot, but for me thats minor as this game should be all about the end game...Conquest or pillage!

That would be the logical conclusion, but taking into account how companies are acting lately, it could be part of the hype.

Interesting numbers. Could you point out the source you have for this?
where did u come up with that? i playe din the LOTRO beta and the vanguard betas. And they both had 12 or so servers in beta and at launch.
7 or so for Lotro, don't know the number of EU open-beta servers. Which actually could have 2 or 3.
But you was talking about the preorder deals when you could play a few days earlier, on the release servers?
I'm so broke. I can't even pay attention.

The number of people playing the beta is low but you also have to take into account that
#1. BETA servers are getting wiped soon AND EVERYONE in beta knows that.
#2 christmas just passed.
#3 its new years now.

Gotcha, thanks
I came into beta late but I was spanish so i saw you chatting up often
I'll be spanish at release as well.
Anyone who believes this game is going to have 500,000 subs by summer is delusional.
50,000 you may be onto something.
50k isnt that many people in the world..
And only time will tell if it will have 10k to 9 million (hehe). But never say never!
A safe number I will say, 200k for the 1st month. This is just my opinion though.
