thinking of coming back to UO, need convincing

triptogntriptogn Member Posts: 18

Some of my best times gaming were in UO, and I've been twirling around the idea of getting the 7th anniversary addition and firing it up.

I guess I need a bit of convincing, I havent played since the first expansion.  Can anyone give me a synopsis of the newer features and why you are still playing after all these years?  Please keep in mind, i've basically bought every big MMO that has come out over the years, so I'm kinda used to all the new features and 3d stuff that comes along with it.  I guess I just need someone to push me over the edge to come back.

I would say, play DAoC. UO is going to hell even faster than it used to be. Right now they are having a huge lag fest (like usual) and the 7th AE was nothing more than pretty pixels. Nothing new has been added, and the game is still shitty as hell. To each their own I guess, but when a lot of players spend more time posting about this game then playing it it can't be all that good.

Don't waste your time coming back to UO... it lacks so much and has a feeling of incoherence now, if that makes sense. It's not what it used to be at all.

You mentioned 3d stuff? The 3d client is garbage. NO ONE uses it, quite literally, I have never met anyone on forums or in-game that uses it. It's slow, buggy, unstable, looks bad, makes colored mounts lose their color, players look like stuffed animals.. if you were to buy the game, you would start up the 3d client and hate it within five minutes. It is seriously that bad. That's why they had to create sprites for the formerly 3d client-only monsters, so that people could go to the formerly 3d client-only lands using the 2d client.

Save your money. I have plenty of fond memories of UO, and I miss it deeply, but UO is not the place to go for fun anymore. Unless camping for rare items and having script kiddies steal them from you is fun.

I wasn't so much interested in the 3d cllient, i was just saying I'm kind of used to being in a 3d environment for these kinds of games now.

Its kinda sad, I guess UO is dead or dying.  I already played DAOC, not enough to do imho.  Thanks for the input guys.

Anyone else have some comments on this?

I'm selling Ultima Online Third Dawn if you want to buy it on e-bay. It's $6.00. Not including S&H. That depends on where you live.

This isnt it. Really. I currently play Ultima Online, the AoS patch screwed everything up though. Once you get used to it, it's not so bad, but getting used to it is the worst. I love UO, I can't leave it, but Rennaisance was the best thing that ever happened to Ultima Online. Not Age of Shadows.

    Ultima Online- Apoc
    Final Fantasy XI Online- Nabara
World of Warcraft- (Coming soon :P)

I like UO but there's a lack of things to do.. for me it was either macro magery to get it past 95, farm money, or if the guild was doing champ spawns go join them.

Is Test Center up all the time now? Cause I would come back to UO just to play Test, fun times are to be had on there..

What about the Age of Shadows? specifically the paladin and the necromancer class?
    Are those fun to play?
How's the PvP with 2 new class coming in?
The necromancer looks cool with the skeleton helm.::::01::
Maybe I'd try the UO 7th anniversary if it's getting better.

it was only $20 so i got it,

Not many necromancers ever wear skeleton helms.

I remember during UO:R, classes were extremely unbalanced, especially in PvE. A tamer could kill anything effortlessly. A bard could, with just a little stress, provoke two big mobs on each other and they sit back and watch, then finish off the winner. A mage could summon 3 blade spirits and kill anything, as long as they avoided being hit. Warriors and archers were gimp in PvE, they would find even some lower mobs to be challenging. But it wasn't so bad, because it took a lot more effort to BECOME a GM tamer, mage etc. than it took to become a GM warrior. At least, that's the way I saw it.

That's all gone in AOS. The pure warrior is no more. If you want to be up to par as a warrior, you MUST choose Necromancy or Chivalry. It's not so bad cause then you won't need 35 Magery to use recall scrolls, they have their own recall spells. Provocation has been badly nerfed, it's not just a flat % chance to succeed anymore but now monsters have individual difficulty. Taming has been badly nerfed, big bad mobs like dragons become weaker once they're tamed so I hear, and now there are control slots that limit how many pets you can have. I didn't find mages to be that much different, I think that they now have more power in their damage spells and less power in their summoning spells.

By all means try it if you want, play it for a month and see if you like it, I liked it when I came back during AOS but only stayed for a month and a half... it got old quickly and it just wasn't the same.

    Thanks for the reply Skael::::01::

How's the archery doing in AoS? Is there any improvement with the Archery skill?
Archery with melee combo should be awesome. Does high/low dex have difference in Archery?

archery/palidin is the best combo to do the gauntlet in doom. easy to get over 100 dmg per hit, and only need about 300 dmg to get looting rights on avg. dex does make a difference. you can easily find armor that can raise your dex alot too. i know alot of people have dex over 130.

Archery is still pretty bad in general, but with Chivalry and in certain circumstances it can be awesome.

As an archer, let's say it takes 3 seconds of delay between shots. So you're fighting a daemon let's say. As an archer you usually step back to avoid being hit, but if I remember correctly, here's the catch:  If you move, it resets your shot delay. So if you were standing still and had .5 seconds till your next shot, and suddenly you moved back two tiles to avoid being hit, you would have to stand still on that tile for another 3 seconds in order to shoot again. This made archery very unappealing to me, wasn't worth the trouble in my opinion, it just seemed so choppy and inefficient.

However, the later expansions have come up with tons of insanely hard monsters that have grossly huge amounts of HP and melee hits kill in 1-2 hits. Can't think of the name of one off the top of my head, but yeah. There are also spiffy magic weapons that do cool things, and there is a Paladin spell where you cast it, and then the next monster you hit turns orange and you do double damage to it or something, but the catch is that any monster that isn't what you just hit will do double damage to you.

Picture this:  You're in some swamp in Ilshenar or something and there's a daemon. You are a paladin/archer, and you have a bow that is daemon slaying ( double damage to daemons ) and is 100% cold damage ( AOS introduced damage types, and daemons are weak to cold ). Then you cast that paladin spell ( I think it's called uh, sworn enemy? Something like that ). You would shoot the daemon, name would turn orange, and then 2-4 hits would probably kill the daemon, meanwhile you are several tiles away and didn't get hit by its melee once. Although there's an imp nearby, and since imps are not daemons you have to watch out until the spell wears off because they will do a lot of damage to you if it attacks you. That's what archery is about in AOS, although you will probably never come across a bow that is conveniently 100% cold and daemon slaying. image

it's a good game.....but i think there's a lot mmorpg's that are on their way out that I'd look forward to rather than coming back to UO image

Yeah, i was a little surprised to see so many people say stay away.

I don't even know which expansions came out since I've played.  I played the beta, played normal game, got the expansion (dont remember the name of it) and thats it.

Would I be best off getting the 7th anniversary edition?

I've played them all, and have the fondest memories of my UO experiences, that says alot.

Odd, other then the lowsy paper doll models I am rather fond of the 3D Client. I guess I am not everyone.

Dont do it, you will be disappointed. I came back after 2 years off and found that the game was horrible. I used the 15 day come back thing, and didnt play after the 10th day. The game has gone down the crapper. It was much better when I first started playing in 98.

I honestly don't think it's worth it to come back.  The last time I've really played was about a year ago(I have access to a friend's acnt, so I check in once in a while), and things don't seem to be getting better.  In my opinion, Age of Shadows really screwed everything up.  Although some of the new things were good - custom houses, new lands, new professions - it really screwed up the major focus of the game: fighting.  Not just PvP, but everything.  It switched the game from Skill-based to Item-Based.  Being a 7x GM PvPer or whatever no longer matters; Artifacts, Neon-Weps, etc.

Also, I don't know if anyone else has noticed this, but there is no more etiquette in the game anymore.  There used to be a time when players followed certain unofficial player rules, such as don't steal other player's kills, don't loot mobs that aren't yours, rez/heal ppl if they need it, etc.  It's pretty much every player for him/herself now.

And as you know, the game plateaus pretty quickly.  Once you've done just about everything, there's nothing left to keep you pulled in.  I've left the game about 3 or 4 times since I started playing in 2000 b/c I couldn't find anything to do (the expansions pulled me in).

Don't get me wrong, I love(d) the game.  I've had my best gaming experiences in UO.  In fact, I compare all online games I try/play to UO (and still haven't found anything as great as UO and I've tried a great many).

But UO is dying, the changes have pretty much driven all the hardcore vets out, leaving only griefer noobs and bragging fools.

However...there is a new expansion coming out soon...(I plan on going back to try it out...)

With pub 25 and recent patches archery has been much improved. Arrows take a fraction of a second to hit target, no more are you able to outrun arrows. Also you can move once you've fired. With a decent repeating crossbow you can fire more than once a second.
