So, whatever has become of the DC MMO being worked on by SOE?

A DC MMORPG was announced with big fanfare in 2006 by SOE - with Batman/Hush creator Jim Lee being brought on as a 'Exec. Beard' or 'Lead Strawman' or something. Since then nothing has been heard at all of this project. Does anyone have any facts or news or speculation as to what has been going on with this SOE project?

Maybe at the next San Diego Comic Con they will go fully public....
DC Comics licenses Kynapse AI middleware
This much is public about it. Not much to go on. As you can see the title is aimed at PS3/PC
"The Kynapse middleware solution includes specific features for next-generation platforms, including hierarchical 3D pathfinding compatible with streaming mechanisms, and 3D dynamic pathfinding for full physics games"
from this statement fromt he article I think you can make a lot of exciting assumptions :P
Would be nice with a new Super Hero MMO, that will actually be good in the long haul, or have some real gameplay.

I have "heard" that they are using the UT III engine for this game in a MMO "RPG" sense. Not a FPS sense.
SOE used the undreal 2 engine for vanguard and look how that turned out. Lineage 2 used it also and thats just a long grind game. Either it will have performance problems or crappy gameplay. But I do hope it turns out good, at least better than CoH and CoV.
me too, although knowing SOE, I'll keep myself at a distance before choosing whether I want to play or not.

I spend about 15 bucks a week on DC comics, lol. Sometimes more.

however its being developed by SOE, so i see the familiar "MMORPG" gameplay with the DC theme thrown on
no new gameplay, just little twists on what we already know
Well my friend SOE did not design Vanguard. Sigil did. And sigil went with the UT II engine. SOE only purchased SIgil aka Vanguard which was broken. Still what can we expect? Designers and producers decide how to use the engine.
This is all interesting stuff - especially as now that the Marvel MMORPG game seems to have been shelved:

I cannot see how either SOE or DC will be able to turn the superhero IP into anything but another CoX - ie. a beautifully done but essentially limited game.

Here is some very odd news.
MMO giant Blizzard has just launched a WoW Comic - guess who was the artist who provided the front cover/ Why, none other than famed DC artist and creator of Batman/Hush - Jim Lee...
...But Mr. Lee is - or was last we heard - Executive Creative Director for SOE's mooted DC Online Universe.
Does this mean anything to anybody?
Obviously Blizzard and SoE are making an unholy alliance.
Jim Lee isnt the creator of Batman , Bob Kane is , Bob Kane is going to wake from his grave and Alter Beast you all. Jim Lee is a has been hack of an artist from the 90s who along with Jim LeField , Tom Mcfarelan (spelling) ruin comics and nearly brought them to brink of death.
Jim Lee couldnt even manage a company him and his goons made , the books were all late by several months. They were poorly done , poorly writen, and clones of each other. Nothing original has come out of Jim Lee in ages.
Frank Miller is the sole reason Batman is still around today.

DC and Marvel begun launching new online projects , mid Dec there was a post on thier Online comic project about forcoming games. Cryptic / Statesman has this uncanny ability to produce killer alphas in a span of 5 months from the ground up (happen in City of Heroes).
The latest news on Marvel front is that some of the old editors have been brought on board , and they combing through the 5k+ archive of marvel history. if you remember last time , anyone from Marvel spoke it was about the fact that certain characters *cough wolverine cough* are appearing in so many books that they dont have a straight history.
They also were working on which time period / world they would use.
Current rumbles at DC has been that the current CEO is ressing Crisis era characters , which was suppose to be purged but it is causing massive up heaval in the world.
DC also signed out a large chunk of thier properties , Batman , Superman , Superboy , Green Latern to name a few , the companies , naming Time warner doesnt want projects screwing thier Batman movie or thier whatever. Its IP mess , so much that the JL movie may not have Batman or Superman in it.
Marvel project will remain hushed and under the radar til 2009 , then expect to a shock & awe from Statesman crew like he did in COH. he is maybe the last of the great designers , since the down fall of loser Brad and hack Lord British ...
This does not have anything to do with the mmo but in the Movie "I Am Legend" when Will Smith is in the shot of time square hunting animals, there is a building with a billboard of Super Man and Batmans symbols combined. So there probably is a Justice League movie coming and this is probably even more publicity for the mmo.
And I think it would be cool if instead it was a Marvel vs. DC mmo lol.
