I finally clicked on the cinematic trailer on the WAR homepage and was surprised by the battle between the elf and dark elf. He casts a spell at her and she blocks it with her daggers - maybe it hurt her, but it looks like she countered it.

Well, bear in mind that EA Mythic specifically said that the cinematic was created solely to show the spirit of WAR and is not indicative of game mechanics and such. In other words, view it more as a movie based on WAR (a very early version of WAR, to boot) and not a faithful reproduction of it. It is meant more for marketing and such.
That being said, who knows? It is certainly possible that spells could be blocked and even countered with abilities.
dude that was made by Blur (the studio that made the cinimatic) before they have the first 3d render of a witchelf.
So basicly it was made without really knowing how the classes would play other than a simiple basic idea and concept art.
