Which MMO will define 2008 for the Genre?

Deathstrike2Deathstrike2 Member UncommonPosts: 1,777

Will it be AoC with the blood and gore and topless females (maybe)?

Will it be WAR with it's RvR play?

Or will it be something different - maybe a fleshed out POBTS or CoS or something else?

Just for fun, what do you think?

It will be WoW: Litch King. because everyone will play it and it will be the most fun.

  • My vote is going to AoC.

It seems to be bringing many new things, like combat and how spellcasting is handled.  All while staying familiar with a fantasy like setting but being mature at the same time.  And the kill moves are simply awesome in an MMO!

I think it's going to be Warhammer.

    Why?

It's being created for mass appeal, like WoW.

Currently, there are two options for creating a MMORPG.

    1. Make a game and highlight how it's "different" then WoW - This is what AoC is doing. They are trying to get the gamers that don't play WoW for whatever reason or another.

    2. Make a game that is a "better" version of WoW, but don't make direct comparisons. This is the WAR approach, try to take away customers directly from WoW.

Warhammer is setting itself to be a direct competitor to WoW. They are really the first to come along with the hype and press coverage and personality to position themselves to compete directly with WoW. Every other MMOG has tried to take the slice of the pie that WoW left behind.... WAR is aiming to steal some of the pie away from WoW directly.

For this reason, I believe Warhammer will define 2008 for the genre, either by its epic failure or its paramount success.

I agree, and additionally they seem to have convinced EA to give them the Blizzard "release when it's ready" approach, which I think is a vital factor.

I do think AoC will do well enough though, I just think WAR will do better.

    I'll be trying both :D

I am not putting my hopes up that any of those games will be released this year.  Maybe in 2009.

lol....just lol. ppl refuses to see by the end of 2008 WlolW will be moribund,no matter how many expansions they bring to milk the cow.

fanboi zombies can be so naive and cute sometimes....

to not be completly offtopic: WAR will bring some fresh air to those seeking for quality PvP...but no,none of the upcoming games are OMFGBBQ awesome or amazingly original, so i guess any of them will be a new milestone in the MMORPG history.

I have my hope for darkfall and although it may not beat WAR our AoC if it does come out with everything they promise it will Completely redifine all MMO's from 2008 on

Age of Conan will be a more interesting release in that it is doing something fairly different and has a new combat system, but I also think it will be, at best, average, and quite likely a failure. At any rate, it will be very talked about.

Warhammer Online is going to define 2008 for MMORPGs because it will be the successful one of the two, of that I am quite certain (in as much one can be via speculation). It is going to be the one that draws a large subscriber base and will put a dent in WoW's numbers. It will not topple it, not by any means, but I think it will bruise it.

Actually I think this will be the year that people leave MMO's in  droves because innovation and fun is dead.

Kill X fetch Y Raid Raid Raid  oh look I can gank him.

    Boring.

I think Warhammer will make the biggest splash, then contract.  WAR is probably the most anticipated game, but heavy PVP games (or PVP servers within other games) never seem to do well in the long run.

Folks clamor for PVP, but when the get it, the irritation of being ganked tends to wear down the player base.  Just look at WOW's underpopulated PVP servers as an example.

Ganking is fun.  Being ganked is generally not fun.

Yep, Wow will own them all because they are all just more of the same, but by less skilled developers.  You can rail against Blizzard all you want, but no one yet has come close to matching them.

There is always the chance the upcoming ones could surplant Blizzard, but the chances of that are not likely.  I don't have much confidence in Mythic and am not sure about Funcom, especially since they sighed up with RMT.

WAR is the only game that has a chance to even approach the success of World of Warcraft, but WoW will continue to define the genre well through 2008. I just don't understand the thinking of people who say that suddenly WoW will not only quit gaining new subscribers but that millions of them will switch to some new game, just because it's new. Age of Conan may garner some support, but it just doesn't have the widespread appeal. Unlike every other game that's gone before it, WoW has been gaining speed and subscribers year after year and likely hasn't even peaked yet.

Actually, i think the real advancements will be done in Mmos that are not so popular.
Maybe Wurm Online will find a publisher and hire some Devs? Terraforming is a damn cool feature! I really want to see this in other mmos!
Probably Eve will get a new record in Player numbers. Maybe ambulation will be a success and lay ground for an innovative World of Darkness-MMO?
Maybe virtual words like Entropia will have a great impact on the mmo-world this year.

Neither War nor WoW will "define 2008" in my eyes. They may reach a combined share of 70%, but they are basically the same. WoW defined 05, now its time for something new.

TCoS will probably do it for me. It has most (if not all) of the thing I'm looking for in an MMORPG + some new and interesting features. Also I'm quite eager to find out what GW2 has to offer (not much info out there imho atm). So those two games I'm waiting for the most. I have no idea if they will define the MMO genre in 2008 but we'll all just have to wait and see.

Is this game still on track for a Q1 08 release?

The players who are saying such things are thinking like "gamers". They haven't really understood the fact that WoW appeals to non-gamers who have no real reason to leave. Players who want to spend some time with sons and daughters, family members, etc.

WoW is not going anywhere and quite frankly, no game will approach its numbers. Just not going to happen. WoW is more of a social happening at this point.

I'm voting for Aion...as people are seriously underestimating it. Just reading through the Hype posts a load of people have the misconception that it's an Asian grind fest...

Or perhaps the story driven quests, siege warfare, combat system, mounted combat, and FFA servers?

    World of Warcraft.

WAR and AoC - while bringing something else to the table - are still to similar to WoW to define anything in the genre. If another game than WoW will do it for 2008, I'll go for PotBS simply because it's different and can appeal to masses of players. I haven't tried it myself yet though, so I don't know.

But hey, that's just my guesses. I'm not a prophet or time traveller like all those people other who already know how many players WoW, WAR and other games will have come December 2008. ;-)

If someone had came up to me in 1980 when I was on my Atari 2600 and said we will be playing games with thousands of people at the same time.I guess my response would have been,"but I only have 2 joysticks"

I am hoping taht an original IP comes along that is good i am disapointed with all the predefined IP's at least with a new one you have no predefined expectrations on how it should play, what classes, skills, sandbox or not ect.  Just hoping for a new IP game.
