I hope so, i mean even Eve is going in that direction and they have a much larger sub base so im sure that should say something.
It's worth pointing out that EvE obtained that larger subscription base before they went in that direction. But EvE also always has had the minimal face/head avatar feature, which may also be relevant to consider.
All we have stated for Jumpgate Evolution is that we presently have no plans for full-character, walking-around avatars at game release. We are building the game from a codebase that is for spaceflight, not from a codebase that was for walking around. Given our tight development timeline, we are simply not going to try to integrate another entire codebase to support walking around right now.
Post-release, we would like to explore several kinds of major game enhancements. As wise people have pointed out, NetDevil does own a codebase that supports full character animated avatars. It would be very reasonable to experiment with this when we have more time.

Full walking avatars would be nice to have, but as you say they are not essential for release. I am happy with that, considering they may appear as expansion material. What I would really like to hear though is whether the "talking head" kind of animated avatars will be in at release? I liked them in old games such as the retros in Privateer etc.

Mixed feelings here. Well, I crave for some space based MMOG (Well, actually MMORPG because RP is the biggest driving force in gaming for me, though what people mostly understand under that term is some grindfest with lots of static quest, something I can live without with in a MMOG) with big stations and capital ships, fighter and boarding action, hanging out at bars and so on.
But, contrary to Eve, I never had much problems in JG with immersion, some advantage of the single seat fighters and cockpit view compared to these unpersonal suppose to be big vessels that look so small in their 3rd person view. On the other hand some personal touch wouldn't harm, just wish it would go more into the direction of paint jobs and equipment. Though once avatars are considered, please make sure there are some good Quantar choices like shown in the old JG pilot pictures, including helmet.
Though I personally couldn't care less about avatars, when I tried to get some of my IRL buddies to play EVE, they wouldn't, JUST BECAUSE there were no avatars. This is not a small problem. Many people feel this way.
I hope they put avatars in so I can finally pick a game for the bunch of us to play. (They want me to play WoW... I just can't get into it)
Here's the real, brutally honest answer, which nobody wants to hear: "Wait and see."
So the way i read that is ... If papa bear actually generates additional revenue based on their Avatar decision, then so will you guys
Personally i like the direction JGE is taking, and from what i have read it will be a nice pace of dynamic combat, i just hope it doesnt turn into a PvP grief fest.
If itty bitty Earth and Beyond was able to do it, JE surely can. If they want a cult following like Eve then keep it out, if they want more business from a wider player base they will add it. For me, that's what will be the deciding factor to get my hard earned money each month. We all have preferences, likes and dislikes, they aren't going to please the masses, however, for my money, they will need to incorporate them. It isn't that hard to accomplish.

Fair enough.
