You ever get the urge to play something....different ?

 

For the past 15-20 years I've been shooting, hacking, slashing, chopping, grinding, swinging and sniping.

The whole thing is just getting repetative.

Leveling based on killing stuff, it's such an old tired theme, but what else is there?

I used to like playing Sim City, putting together a town and watching it come alive or

Jumping into a car in Need for Speed and tearing up the asphalt or

Hopping into Cessna, taking off and enjoying the scenery as you fly around.

How come no MMO has any aspects other than "kill 15 rats/bats/cats and come back to me for xp" ?

I mean in single-player games, sometimes you're in the mood to shoot, sometimes you're in the mood to drive, sometimes you're in the mood to build.

Sadly most MMO's don't have anything like that, it's either "go kill stuff" or logoff.

In Planetside when I got sick of shooting I would hop into a truck and just drive around recharging bases.

    I think thats one reason I never got bored of DAOC. RvR is different every time.

    Dont want to RvR, go PVE

    Dont want to PVE, go craft

    Dont want to craft, play with your house

    Dont want to play house, ...er log off

    thats why i liked runescape, there are about 20 equally important skills, which are fairly varied and fun

    plus there used to be no AH, so being a merchant was a blast

    Yeah not only is there a silly AH, there is a "fair trade" system now, which won't allow people to trade something for too low or too high a price. Eliminates merchanting completely. Tsk, tsk.

    I get the urge to play Pong all the time. It's about as repetitious as most of these MMORPGs.

    Alrighty then! Yeah I get that feeling too, something innovative. Well, what I present to you isn't exactly the newest idea, it deals with crossovers. So you like shooting? And driving? And all those other shenanigans? You like Nintendo? Imagine you making a character, either a space pirate(that looks cool, unlike some games....cough), or a plumber(plumbess-plumb-girl?), or a hero in a medieval land. An MMO that had the platforming of Mario, the shooting of an FPS(but dealing with Metroid as this is a Nintendo-related idea), and tyhe hack-n-slashing of Zelda( the game isn't for all but they'll work out the kinks). There would be enough stuff to do to get you through the whole game in either career path. Earn XP by completing levels of Mario, PVP in a FPS metroid arena, good old rat quests(yeah yeah I heard you they suck, but apparently people love 'em) or maybe something a bit more Diablo-esque. The thing about these rat-quests is that they are short and simple, and keep people coming back for more, it is instant gratification that makes them so addictive(maybe not for 15-20 years perhaps). We could throw in some Mario Kart for the racing fan, some puzzles for you thinkers out there, and hey, maybe some strategy for you Warcraft people(building a mushroom kingdom? Commanding Hyrule?). Whoo, my fingers are aching from all this typing. It's just a blur of fanboy excitement!

    Just a rumor but I heard DAOC got ruined by Exp. packs, it's still hella fun?

    Basically its because outside of an instance you are forced into a fairly generic model.  And inside of instances many games are stuck in the "dungoen crawl" mode back from D&D days

     

    Case in point look at Guild Wars story missions.  Some missions are fairly dungeon crawly.  But some missions are not.  Yet the normal quests you receieve in town are pretty generic. 

    For example let me describe a story mission from GW: Nighfall I found pretty cool.  Now keep in mind this is an instance and World of Warcraft (and therefore any other EQ clone)could an instance like this if they chose.

     

    The purpose is to defend a keep of an ally against an invading horde of an insane improsned god from the under world.

    You have 3 siege engines and 3 gates.  There are four warlords and their war bands in various places.  The enemy will assault the seige engine and will assult the gate.  If they get through the gate they will march to your noble ally and kill him.

    You must stop the lord of the keep from dying. 

    Now you can try to keep the engine up.  Which is nice because then they help you kill the enemy.

    Of course if you spend too much time at any of the seige engines you may wind up with enemies assaulting a gate.  Also you don't exactly know when a Warlord boss comes down as they send waves of normal guy and you don't know which wave will have the boss.

    Also if you jsut full on assult a boss you better be able to run fast and kill fast because you will probably over extend your self and not be able to defense a gate or a seige engine.

    You can't possiblly defend everything and in general you need to wisely pick at least one engine which can fall to the enemy and hopefully stop each boss at or near a gate.

    If worse comes to worse you can try to defendthe lord in side the keep epsecially if only one warlord is left.

     

    See this scenario is interesting and novel for many reasons:

    1) first off its a defensive action.  Why are these so rare in MMORPG?

    2) it has multiple solutions and is somewhat dynamic.

    3) there are interesting static emplacements such as the siege engines and the gates.

    4) The goal is to keep someone alive.  Now technically it won't end until you kill all four warlords, so maybe that is a little meh.  But you could see how a variation could simply use a timer instead or something.

     

    But on the other hand the normal town quests of GW are just as staid as WoW quests.  Kill this boss, or get three eggs, or whatever.  Because they make an area and then stick a few quest objects in.  But they can't really allow them to interfere with the area that much and they can't make them long and involved because of the contraints of a generic shared area.

     

    Do I ever want something else?  Sure that is why I play games like Guild Wars. 

    Why does a game like WoW or EQ not really have anything else?  Its not because they can't.  Like I said above WoW could make an instance that worked like the GW keep assault mission.  Its because they think of there game as a dungeon crawl game.  They are stuck in old style D&D games basically.

    When they made the game they made instances with idea of them being for dungeons.

    When GW made instances they had a far more powerful idea in mind.  Basically that they can do almost everything a single player game can do.  This is shown most often in their story missions.  But for those who have some computer savy its also shown in the entire design of GW.

    If you think 'real' PvP might be exciting, try online poker. Just be committed to preparing for the game like you never have before (i.e. read books, memorize odds tables, etc.), and then to most probably losing for the first few months anyway.

    I always have that urge. When I log into Ryzom it's satisfied.

    I agree, but the same can be said about FPS, RTS and other games.

    I would love a MMO with a good story line. I don't want to be the rat killing hero in every MMO either lol.

    I take MMO breaks all the time, right now Civ 4 is my favorite non-mmo game.

    I got the urge to Play something different once. Then i stuck with that game..
    Sometimes, though, i get the urge to go farming. Literarily. Thats when you see me in Wurm Online sowing wheat and baking bread from it.

    Yes I do.  More and more lately for a lot of the reasons the OP mentions.  I've just started EVE and thankfully it is different.  The learning curve is very different than other mmo's and it doesn't scale the way the you would expect it to (bigger ships are not an automatic win).  It's kind of refreshing.

    You know I wouldnt be so quick to judge a system like that, in most games the economy is dragged to the ground because people buy game money and people will raise prices more and more to the point you dont want to buy anything from any auction again.
