Lotro is best questing MMO out there at the moment. And if you don't like Lotro, you can also just try WoW because it's overall the best MMO. But I feel that Lotro and FFXI are the only MMOs out there in wich you can really feel like "playing the story" (I haven't tested out D&D so I don't know of it). WoW, and also EQ2, have a lot of quests, but in them the quests often feel that they are only a way to get the quest reward, not an adventure.
If you have xbox 360, Mass Effect is the best RPG to quest. If you have only PC, out of new games you might want to test out Witcher. And Planescape: Torment is already an old game, but if you can tolerate the graphics you might want to check it out. It's got really good story.
Wow has greating questing & lore. It just so happens blizzard made a game fast and competitive so many people opt to skip through the quest dialogue and read where/what they need to kill. One poster hit the nail on the head saying "around mmorpg wow is like cooties." No different then people hate shopping walmart, but they do because they have the best prices . . . just like blizzard has the all around best game. No single game is for everyone, but people have to get over bashing wow just because they don't like it . . . it's currently the best mmo on the market when you consider all facits of the game.
For questing/story telling LOTRO is the best hands down.
IMO EQ2, but then again not everyone bothers to read the quests.
If you read them in EQ2 they are extremely in depth, but then again I play and enjoy EQ2 so my opinion is a bit biased.
[ Played ] 2Moons, Anarchy Online, City of Heroes, City of Villains, Dark Age of Camelot, Everquest, Everquest II, Guild Wars, HellGate: London, Lord of the Rings Online, Rappelz, RF Online, Shadowbane, Star Wars Galaxies, Sword of the New World, Tabula Rasa, Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, World of Warcraft, Last Chaos
First off the question is what's the best story driven / questing MMO or RPG out now. The question wasn't what you're favorite game was. So if we're going to stay objective neither WOW or EQII make the cut.
1) MMO wise Guild Wars & LOTRO with a distant third to CoX are the best in that regard.
2) As for RPG's I'd say Elder Scrolls Oblivion, Mass Effect and Never Winter Nights II
GW is a really good story driven game. If you also are looking at singleplayer game you should try an old game called The Longest Journey, and dont miss the second recent game called Dreamfall the longest Journey what a awesome story driven game. But i am not sure you can call it a RPG ? It is more like an adventuregame.
Saying WOW doesn't have story driven quests is about as ignorant as it gets. I played LOTRO and it was set up exactly the same, besides the opening tutorial instance. Being interested in the story or not has no bearing. The fact is every single zone and dungeon in WOW has a story to it with quest lines that explain it all and books scattered through out the world to learn more. If you chose to ignore the story, who's fault is that?
WoW is taboo around here. It's the MMORPG equivalent of cooties.
"Don't go near WoW, you'll get cooties!"
"Yeah WoW is one dumb MMO lol! Not for smart people like me rofl"
"LOL... PVP... in WOW??? ROFL.... ROFL ROFL LOLOLOLOLOL"
"WoW is cheap junk food"
They of course forget that WoW pretty much defined the story-driven MMO that we know today, and many try to imitate, yet fail.
The only thing worse than the general hatred of some people against WoW is the extraordinary paranoia of most WoW players that someone somehow is 'getting' at them.
Originally posted by rikilii LoTRO is great, but not perfect. I've learned a lot about Tolkein Lore by playing LoTRO. For instance, after reading LOTR twice and watching the movies half a dozen times, I never appreciated how important eradicating Middle Earth's boar population was to defeating the forces of darkness. Now I know.
LMAO!!! OMG, I never really thought about it from that perpsective!!!!

Oh don't be ridiculous. A poster claims that WoW doesn't have story driven quests, and we call them out on it, and that makes us 'paranoid'?
If someone claims that cars do not have wheels and we correct them, does that make us 'paranoid' because the 'car haters' are 'getting' at us? Here, this might help:

Getting back to the original question I am assuming this means 'For the PC" which, at least for now, knocks out Mass Effect.
That being said:
Single Player RPG: Witcher has an awesome story line. Then, at least in my opinion, is NW2- Mask of the Betrayer. If you want to go back further there are some great Bioware games with fantastic stories.
MMO's: LOTRO has got to be #1 for RPG conent. Next for me would be EQ2, WOW, and then Vanguard. POTC has a decent story to it as well.

WoW has lousy story driven questing. It also has some of the best on the market. That is the paradox of WoW. It has many features that aren't great - but they're better than all the other ones out there. The game itself could use many improvements. The point of many of the instances is questionable (Seriously, beyond Hellfire Citadel, is there any lore to any BC instance? Zangarmarsh made an attempt, but it all kinda fell apart when we all realized that there was secretly no point to draining the marsh, it was just a hook to make us all want to kill Vashj, which maybe 1% of the players will ever do). The questlines are semi-cool, but there's no real life to them. You run around for the skyguard, and get declared king of the ogres. But why? We all know you ain't king of the ogres, when 10 feet north there's High King Pushover, and the Gronn squad sitting in a cave. Does anyone really mention the fact that Gruul can come out of his cave any time he wants, and lay the hurt into a five man party that's beating on his kids?
That's the problem with WoW. Its the disneyland of MMOs. You hop on the rides, see the attractions, but there's no personal involvement. Sure, the ride itself is nifty, and you get to scream at all the cool parts, but in the end, its rather shallow.

I would say that WoW is certainly the best MMORPG out there atm. Good content, intuitve GUI, nice visuals and excellent game design.
...but, no "story-driven questing"!
Hnunk? What are you talking about? There's plenty of 'story-driven questing'. For example, I love Westfall and playing through the Defias quests that begin with the 'Intercept Defias messenger' all the way through to confrontation in the Stockade. Wow is absolutely full of such well-written and well-designed story arcs.
Sorry, I was just pointing out that you should include something like "story-driven questing" to match the topic. That can place emphasis on the subject more than broadened "good content" and "excellent game design". By all means, I agree with you and I too enjoy a lot of WoW's quests!

Guild Wars or LotrO.
I prefer Guild Wars the most though.
