won people's choice award, but will it beat out WAR?

I really think both of these games have a solid chance to be very successful.  I like this game for it's adult centered environment and content along with a pvp system that reflects "adult" behavior.  I think the recipe could yield something better than anything that exists.

BUT, WAR also seems very very cool, with groundbreaking systems (those podcasts are amazing) along with the budget that cannot be stopped!  A proven world of orcs, elves, dwarves, evil ect...  along with the rvr-centric design, also seems to balance between existing games like wow, while also stealing some of the pvp thunder that AOC has.

My question, and this is without ANY opinion of mine, is will AOC get the launch it deserves, or will WAR and AOC be such direct competitors, that both games wil suffer?  If so, what game will be more played?

Well number one it depends who launches first.

Number two, those sick of naked dancing elves, dorcs, dwarves with crappy Scottish accents, nomes with squeky lil voices will be playing CONAN and not the 50875620560238th wow clone to come out.

Number three, I haven't read any where that WAR will have full nudity or decapitations. I mean how good could a nude character look in that cartoony at best graphic system?

And last but least fourth. Why WAR fanbois like you come in here trying to mask your love of WAR with a rather fake and not well thought out description of WAR (not to mention you voted for WAR in your own poll) is beyond me.

Yes CONAN won the readers choice, it is also most voted on the front page. Deal with it WARbois.

Thats right I came up with a name for WAR fanbois, I dub thee...........................................................WARbois

first... warbois is lame, I made up warheads and it's funnier

second, I posted on both forums to get a balanced view because I haven't decided what game to play myself.  Personally I got into WAR first since I have heard of the original NON-video game version, and it looks like a winner.  BUT this game also looks like a winner but for a completely different reason.

and I like the "how dare you fans of other games come to our conan FORM" lol... "stay tuned for battlestar galactica forum.."  I like you style dude.

I like mmo's, I like war and I like AOC, so while I appreciate your input, it is as I expected... one sided, which is why I Posted in both forums.  We'll see if these "warbois, or warheads" defend their prized (yet unreleased) game so ardently as you did.

One question, Do you think this makes you seem a bit of a hypocrite?

If your sick of naked people dancing  come to AOC where you'll look good naked. Is that really the jist of those two lines, if so rofl.

PS. I could care less about online voting etc. We will see the numbers 5 months after the releases and that will pretty much tell us who "won". However, i can say the voting and pre release awards did a ton for Vangaurd , :)

*OH ps the way Eve rolled in MOST of the awards it should be the game everyone here is playing. (Well if these votes meant anything that is, ps it beat out WoW).

I'm an AoC supporter, and I think WAR will get more subscriptions.

I'm looking for a good game not a popular game.

First point I'd like to make is that it seems that you put way too much emphasis on animation tits.....you probably should get help for that.  Second, there is not full nudity in AoC, you must be reading an invalid site or something or perhaps you were being sarcastic by saying WAR won't beat AoC because in AoC there is tits and in WAR there is nothing better than tits?  Well anyway, get over the tits! lol

AoC has a more innovative plan of attack, however, there is some current problems/flaws with the combat system.  This will be a big decision maker for customers and AoC will need to put a ton of effort into correcting some flaws before release.  WAR is very similar to WoW(despite what the WAR fanbois say), but it does look better in almost every category at this point -- only in reading, I haven't gotten the chance to sample the beta.  At this point I would bet on AoC either pushing release back or having a rocky release such as VSoH (only not near as bad).  If they have a poor release, you can bet that WAR will win out easily.  There is still many factors that will have to be seen in the next months.

Well AoC and War are very very different games and i think both will appeal to different audiences. That being said i think neither game will be more popular than WoW, but AoC will be more popular than War. I have friends in Beta who have said nothing but poor things about War. AoC is looking very promising right now, but it is very demaninding on your PC which could eliminate a lot of players with smaller budgets on PCs. I think AoC will be by far a better game though.

Been giving my opinion on this the past year. Subs do not mean a better game, just like religion or sports. I think its important to remember that and not play follow the sheep.

AoC will stand proud on its own unique merits.

Well said. Besides, I am sick of orcs, dwarves and elf crap. Give me some realism for once.

Agree to a certain point but subs and sales are pretty much telling tale of what people prefer. I mean AOC can have realism and a better game design but if not many are playing it for whatever reason, it fails. Sometimes not all great ideas become a success but it was a great idea though.

WAR will be more popular but its gameplay doesnt appeal to the long run.  AoC will have a strong following that will remain with the game for 6+ months (a little like WoW).

as i said earlier WAR will be the most popular for a while at least.

    p.s i will play both  :)

Stellos, would you mind elaborating on these "flaws" you are talking about? and, how does WAR look better 'in almost every category at this point'? if you are going to make bogus claims like those without playing either beta you need something to back it up! i would love to hear  what you think  the flaws are with AoC.

Lets put it in terms the layman can understand shall we?

McDonalds is by no means gourmet food however they do appeal to the masses. Sushi IS gourmet food and while there are literally hundreds of thousands of people who love sushi it will never compare in relative popularity with Mcdonalds.

Funcom makes good games. They dont necessarily appeal to the masses but they appeal to more than enough people to warrant their existence and even prosperity.

It doesnt matter if it beats out WAR. The fact is that AOC will be a great game on its own...WAR or no WAR. Everyone is trying to say who will replace WoW...that also doesnt matter. Both AoC And WAR will grab some WoW players (My guess is 1 million each) and there will still be 5-6 million left on WoW.

I really would like both games to suceed, but I feel alot of you are hyping yoursleves and this game up beyond what both compnaies are going to deliver.

I am in both Beta's will not say much more than that.

To even think any of these games will destory wow is really being optomistic, yes they may gain 1 million subs each and, thats being generous it would still leave wow the dominant game on the market.  I just feel alot of you really need to well how can I say this lower your expectations.  Hype is one thing but deligvering, coping and metting it is another thing alltogether.

personally Im not into the whole realsim looks in video games, unless its a in the fighting genre or fotball.  For these RPG i really prefer it being less realistic, but hey thats just me.:)  Only time will tell which of these games will be second in subscription numbers to wow.

By even admitting to being in AoC's Beta is against its NDA policy. And the devs do come and read here ;)

Wouldnt want anything bad to happen.

I think you just shot yourself in the foot mate. You need to read the agreement again, which you would of had to accept before going any further for the Beta. Same for most games, the thing is warhammer beta under a specific addendum allows you to say your in beta there is nothing like this for AoC. Which makes me thing your admission to both games beta's is a bit suspect now.

Who cares who has more subscribers, really? What difference does it make?

Do you really think that if WAR ends up with 50k more players that Funcom will say "ONOES! We failed!!! Pull teh plug!!11!"

AoC will be a great game. I have faith in it, because Funcom has never made a bad product. (IMO). People who enjoy it will be there for YEARS, not months. Take AO for example.

Also, people are tending to look at the core mechanics of the game, and not how they are implemented. For example, both game A and game B have a questing system....however, in game A, the quests are the same crap that we find in every other game, where you run up to an NPC, click them, and hit "accept", then follow the bread-crumbs mindlessly.

In game B, you run up to an NPC, and have a conversation with them, and your part in the conversation may change the quest entirely, or make it impossible for you to do the quest at all. The quest may require several steps of preperation before it can even be begun, and lead you all over the place on an intricate story path where your decisions make a differance in the outcome, and rewards. (just using an example from AO here).

Same game mechanic, different implementation. This can make a huge difference in the quality of a game.

While I'm raving....why is it these days that mature subjects...such as nudity and gore, are considered IMMATURE? Is it because people are determined to be viewed as being "above all that"? Bullshit.

Not only that, but once again, let's look at implementation. If the "mature content" fits in, and enhances the story told by adding realistic aspects in an immersive manner....isn't that a GOOD thing? Personally, I hate it when a moment arrives in a game where something SHOULD happen, but doesn't due to the fact that it's a game. It breaks the immersion. It would have happened in a movie, or a book, or a graphic novel, or real life....and is it called "immature" in those settings??

    ok ok..../end wall of text....

I don't trust Warhammer.  Their idea appears to be to take Blizzard head on, and beat them at their own game.  Yes, WoW is showing its age, but lets face it, the last two years reads like a history of game developers who were going to beat Blizzard at their own game.  Many of them promised better PvP, and better PvE (but in that distinctive, linear, sandbox-free WoW style).  Blizzard yawned, and their games died.  Honestly, I played WoW, and the community was full of ups and downs, but most of the ones who were planning on migrating to WAR were the downs - the annoying ones.  I don't predict a good community, and I don't predict an amazing game.

AoC sounds amazing.  Disclaimer:  Many games have sounded amazing and failed to deliver (Tabula Rasa, looking at you right now).  Still, the combat actually sounds interesting - an element of twitch based without dragging FPS elements in, simply by focusing hard on combat.  Sandbox game, player made cities, interesting crafting, etc.

Now might AoC turn out to be a dud?  Yeah, it might.  I'd honestly rank the chance around 50-75%.  It still COULD be great.  Warhammer WILL be mediocre.

I don't care how much more people WAR will have, I just need solid mass of people to populate servers, no lag, and a fun combat/game.

It's really a brave thing to try to move boundaries set by current mmorpgs, I really hope they succeed, and by that I mean that they have at least 50.000 subscribers, which is for example more than EVE has (EVE going as a succesful game with constant ravings by people here on forums how good the game is).

Who cares how WAR will fare, here's to future fun times at Hyboria!

WAR or AOC ? WHo cares.. we are all doomed anyways.

    Source: http://www.eldergame.com/2008/01/04/mmo-industry-predictions-for-2008/

    • Hasbro launches their secret stealth project: the new Care Bears MMO. Sadly, it is quickly overrun with Real-Money Trading (RMT), which points out a serious imbalance in the dueling system. After a disastrous first six months, the remnants of the game are bought up by SOE.
    • After seeing the WoW commercial starring William Shatner, Turbine hires Leonard Nemoy to promote LOTRO. His touching rendition of “The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins” is a huge success and LOTRO’s population finally grows enough to open their first new US world.
    • Warhammer Online launches, but only 300 people manage to purchase boxes; everybody else is unable to distinguish it from World of Warcraft and buys the wrong game. After Warhammer fails it is bought by SOE, who muddies up the graphics, lowers the quest quality, and reopens the game as “EverQuest 3.”
    • During beta, Age of Conan discovers that players aren’t quite shocked and disgusted enough by the rampant rape of female characters. In a desperate bid for the all-important adolescent crowd, Funcom adds first incest, then necrophilia, and finally bestiality to the game. This brings down the wrath of PETA, who firebomb their offices. The few survivors are quickly hired by SOE.
    • Bioware finally announces their big secret, the one that industry insiders have known for years and players have been whispering about for months: Bioware has no MMO engine, has no idea how to make an MMO engine, and can’t buy one since there aren’t any working MMO engines for sale. Instead of trudging along making a doomed MMO, they make KOTOR 3 for the XBox 360, and everybody’s happy.
    • Blizzard continues to ignore everyone everywhere and do whatever they please. They continue to have record-breaking sales and subscription numbers, and they are not bought up by SOE.

I really hope both games with have huge success, my preference is AoC however if you measure success of the game by subscribers WAR will be the winner as next mainstream game.

My hopes are that AoC reaches 1m+ subscribers.
