Funcom's old MMO, Midgard - Why was it canceled?

AragoniAragoni Member UncommonPosts: 384

I remember looking through its website a long, long time ago and thought it looked interesting (groups of players building villages and such) but I soon forgot everything about it when I heard about Darkfall (which probably won't make it through the door).

Anyway, someone knows why it got canceled?

Same reason Imperator got canceled.

The company managed to aquire a "well known IP" and decided it was more lucrative to produce that then something original and fun.

Was that the Microsoft MMO that had you being a "heroic" dead guy fighting and gaining faction with elves and stuff? =/

Not as clichéd as it sounds, since they were Norse elves, and therefore bastards.

You might be thinking of Mythica, which was cancelled in 2004.

Midgard, by Funcom, was put on ice in 2001 or 2002. The decision might have been to focus more on Anarchy Online, or simply due to a re-evaluation finding that Midgard wasn't what the market would want at the time. Only Funcom would know.

If memory serves, it was decided at the time to focus on AO, and sci-fi in general, as they felt there was too many other fantasy games already out. This was also when The World ( now titled The Secret World ) was put into the beginning stages of development. Soon after the first screenshots of The World were shown to us on the AO forums, Funcom apparently aquired the rights to Conan. Plans for The World were put on hold to focus on this major IP. After the biggest part of AoC was done, work was once again commenced on The World, utilizing the new technology and coding making AoC had opened them to.

So, as it stands right now, Funcom has one set of devs making AoC, one set working on The Secret World, and yet another set which are currently working on Anarchy Cnline, including current gameplay and content, the new engine slated for mid-2008, and graphics slated for late-2008, early 2009.

Funcom is gearing up to become a good sized competitor in the mmo genre, it seems.

Wow!! I remember that game I was really looking forward to it too! sucks it was dropped, but aoc took over that one, I also have been waiting for secret world, for awhile now, so that one is interesting, but I do have to wonder, how Midgard would have been like.

Do you have some links to corroborate this? I'd be extremely pleased with a graphics update to AO...a game I played at beta and beyond and still enjoy.

I saw a comment about this by one of the AO devs but.. I honestly don't remember how long ago I saw it. I don't really go to the AO site that often anymore. So *I* know it was officially stated that there would be a graphical update. However, with everything else they are working on I do not know if that has changed.

As to a couple other things that were mentioned.

Mythica by Microsoft was canceled after Mythic took MS to court. Their basic claim was that having PvP, Norse Mythology and a game name that was close to their company name would cause "consumer confusion".

I actually at the time expected MS to go into court and bankrupt Mythic (as I didn't believe they had a case). However, instead the project was shut down and the resources moved elsewhere.

When I first heard about this game I thought it was ironic.. because DAoC has a realm of Midgard and this entire game was called MIdgard. Which would have proven interesting if they released around the same time.

The official site was still up when I first heard about it and had music tracks etc.. but the site seems to be gone now and owned by someone else.

The following is the important part.

" What does this mean? In effect it means that we will be bringing the game engine up to date with more modern graphics technology that will, amongst other things, allow us to utilize the power of modern graphics processors. It doesn’t mean that the game will suddenly look amazing different overnight, but it does mean that we will be able to utilize the more modern technology to improve performance and introduce new effects down the line."

Basically, they are upgrading to DirectX 9.0.

Our render coder is hard at work at the conversion but as mentioned before it is a longer term goal. I would imagine it would early 2008 for testing at the very least and (all going well) sometime in the middle of next year where we might see it on the live dimensions.
