How long do you think this will last?

Hello,

I am looking for a good MMORPG to stick with for a couple years because my computer will not be able to run any of the upcoming newer games.  I tried the trial of this game and it runs pretty decent.  I won't have enough money for a new comp for about a year or two so I need a game to hold me for that long.  Do you think the population of this game will be healthy within the next couple years or will it take a nosedive?

the game is not at risk

Hard to tell whats going to happen once WAR and AoC come out, but EQ2 has a very healthy player base so i shouldnt worry too much.

You could ask what happened to the populations when Vanguard and LOTRO launched for a good indication of what might happen when the new games launch.  I don't think either of those 2 games have the staying power to keep the people they drew away from EQ2 or other games though (for the most part).

Someone who was around EQ2 during the launch of those two could give you a better idea of any drop in population than I could, so maybe they can answer.

Personally I think one of the new titles this summer will do a lot of damage to existing MMO communities population.  I don't think any game is going to be safe from big drop offs, so just play something fun for now and see what happens is my advice. Like someone else said, it is really hard for games to go bellyup.  Server mergers tend to fix population problems anyhow.

I would say this game has passed its summer and is in its autumn.  Yes, it has a stable population, but thsoe are the hardcore, long-term folks.  I think the newbie population is thinning, at least from my last time logging in.

I wouldn't worry about the future of Everquest II, it is one of the most stable game in the industry at the moment, and Warhammer or AoC won't change anything, simply because they don't appeal to the same audience.

Warhammer is really nothing more than "DaoC meet World of Warcraft", I am not saying it is "bad" I think the industry is in need of such game, but I don't think it is something the EQ2 Audience is longing for.

As for AoC I have a weird feeling about it, somethings tells me it will fails badly, but I am not too sure why yet, there is something wrong with this game, about how it looks, its gameplay, the fact that they want to make it on Xbox 360 too etc, I really don't have much faith in it.

Anyway, if you are looking for a matured game with smooth gameplay and stable community, EQ2 is what you are looking for.

EQ2's sub number will no doubt drop they always do when a new MMO comes along and of course theres THAT expansion coming out later on in the year for that game ;)

But with RoK has come more people than ever and while they may stray for awhile they'll come back to EQ2 when its expansion comes around november time

Only been playing 6 months myself. My wife just joined in January...and is loving every minute of it...we constantly see new people asking questions or alts being played at the lower levels..

So...basically...maybe play the game before commenting eh? Try a new server, etc, etc...

There was a noticeable drop in population when VG and LOTRO launched. VG hit my server the hardest with some guilds losing well over half their players. I remember Qeynos Harbor, usually a hotbed of activity being pretty much deserted and I really believed that EQ2 was in terminal decline. The thing is that within two months, the vast majority of those players had returned.

LOTRO didn't hit as hard but it seemed that the players that did leave stayed away for longer. But only last month a number of ex-guildies I knew well returned citing the lack of endgame content in LOTRO.

At the end of the day, content is king and this is what EQ2 has more of than any MMO I've played except for maybe EQ1. From level 1 until long after you've hit the level cap there is so much to see and do that even the slowest players with xp gain disabled will miss a lot as they level up. That gives the game real replay value and an incentive to re-roll.

There is also a slow but steady influx of new players to the game over recent months. So I'm convinced that despite its age (can 3 years be described as 'old'?), EQ2 has a healthy future.

I've seen a healthy increase in the playerbase over the last 2 years, with every new expansion. Recently on the EU server Runnyeye we've had a huge influx of new people trying out the game, and a huge amount are sticking with it and loving it.

RoK has had mixed reviews from the loyal playerbase, but most are thoroughly enjoying it, and looking forward to the (now regular) updates due throughout the year to come. Rumours of the next expansion due at the end of the year are already circulating too.

EQ2 will certainly be around for some years to come. No danger of that. Just look at the ongoing success of it's predecessor, and the continued support and backing of SoE.

Currently returned to Norrath after disliking Hyboria.

I can confirm the number coming onto runneyeye myself having played there for the last 3 years its nice to log on somewhere say like nek forest and not be the only person in the zone

I recently purchased the game with all expansions and made a char on Runnyeye, and im not having any problems finding groups and theres always people in the zones im in, and i found a nice guild aswell.

Looks like EQ2 still has alot to offer even to new players.

EQ2 has a pretty stable community but with so many new games to come its hard to say. I think it will retain a decent number of players for some time but not too much, couple years max. As i said hard to say, will depend a lot on how successful will be some of the more expected releases of 2008 and 2009.

But theres no game that would give u any guarantee of a stable community for a long time, too many things involved to be sure.

Game will last as long as the population keeps going as it is now , no way of telling what may happen when some of the other mmo's come out.

  • HousamHousam Member Posts: 1,460

and by a year or two you should have high level charecters...and the high level areas are usually quite populated and take longer to die :)

I don't know what server you play on, but I have noticed ever since EoF a steady stream of newbies.  Each night I log in there are new people in the lower level chats asking those questions the rest take for granted.  It hasn't been just a handful either.  Sometimes they chat about where they came from, but mostly not, we don't care as much about that as we do that they have joined the game and enjoying it.

I think, EQ2 is dying yet. Population is falling down slowly, but continuously.

Lot of long time players (from my friends list) left this game at the end of year...

Im out of game for second month (will come back in next two weeks) but, not sure for how long, coz some nice MMORPG games come this year and EQ2 is changed to "80s grinding game".

If your are out of the game for the second month, how do you know your friends list is empty?  Super powers? I don't know where you played, but on my server it is busy and hasn't dropped.

The game has never been a grind for me, so I have no frame of reference.  In fact, I don't get in to groups that are going out to grind.  There is plenty to do other than that.

I played the game off and on since launch and have tried about 3 or 4 different servers, including the most populated (Antonia Bayle); I am familiar with EQ2...and its problems.

EQ2 is the "POK" of MMORPG's.
