It's a bit surprising tho that each one of you that didn't agree with my opinion (except pappy maybe) from second post, had to either call me names or tried to find out how traumatized childhood I had, that I'm raving psychotic emo kid that hates blizzard. If you noticed, I have not insult any of you, I only stated my opinion and you obviously are not able to accept it.

Still, hell I'm not blaming Blizzard. It's a solid company that releases polished products (I actually enjoyed playing Warcraft 1/2 and then Starcraft). They are not taking risks, they are not trying to appeal on people that like something more maybe deep. It's their strategy I accept that. What I can't accept is the community calling Blizzard the best company out there, that saved the genre, and are the RPG authorities. The RPG authorities for me are the guys from Troika Games that had to close their business, because people wanted Vampire the Bloodlines probably to be linear RPG a'la Neverwinter Nights. But instead it delivered complicated dialogue based non-linear game.

Considering how many hours I spent in Diablo 2 I suppose it would be correct to state that I liked the game. However it feels outdated now, it was mainly a farm fest with the same stuff over and over. The only thing that kept player playing was the need to get better stuff. The game was awesome for me back when I played it, but now... well, a game that's the same style would be bore me in 10 minutes.

I loved Diablo 1 and 2 but I never considered an RPG.   Its a Hack and Slash action game.  When I think of RPG games I think of Bioware, Black Isle Studios, Troika Games, and numerous other industry veterans that made some of the best ever RPG games.

Do I think Diablo could be made into an RPG game? Sure..but hopefully not by Blizzard.

It's an insult to call these games RPG or action RPG because it has nothing to do with any actual roleplaying. I hope the developers will rot in hell for it and we will never see any more crap games like that in the future. But I guess it won't happen. No more Planescape Torment, no more Fallout, no more Arcanum but instead the same hack and slash shit, because that's what masses want.
Its not like diablo even comes close to being the first of this genre.  There were randomly generated RPG games with Ascii art before CRPGs like Ultima I existed.  And there were ones with isometric graphics before diablo.

Like with most things involved with Blizzard they didn't start anything they just made something that sells.

Anyway the point is this sort of thing has been side by side with other RPGs since the whole genre started.  Don't be hatin on the NetHack.

Indeed, but hell even Nethack had more roleplaying features that Diablo. By the way, wasn't it called "Rogue" before?

    diablo.

    a total overrated brand.

part 1 was fun for some days, part 2 was just a clone with bad graphics, and too much grinding.

    thats what i think.

What was not to love about the Diablo series ?  It's one of the greatest rpgs of all time if not the greatest. Over 10 mill copies sold of the Diablo series and still today many thousands still play it. If Blizzard announced a Diablo mmo or even a Diablo 3 rpg you would see millions rush to go play it as soon as they could.

Is this what they teach in schools nowadays? Reason with mass hysteria and popularity?

Gotta love that notion, the one about people blindly following a game not because they enjoy it but because they see other people doing it.You hear it a lot on here from the hardcore geeks when they mention wows success. Of course up on their high horses theyre totally above all that, and their opinion is obviously the correct one.

People will like what they enjoy, and its going to take more than a handful of pretentious 30 something men to to change their minds.

I liked Diablo I and II when they were fresh.  I like MMORPGs better.  One thing that I think MMORPGs can learn and apply from the Diablo series is the loot system.  I'm going to repost something from a poster named Schild from f13, and I agree with every word:

There are 6 things that make Diablo loot what it is.

    1. The distribution system: Some things have higher drop rates on better items, but no one is chasing after that one shiny - this is where WoW fails, everyone knows what everyone wants.

    2. .The randomization of attached attributes: This is something WoW could fix, sure everyone wants the...whatever, but that whatever could have different stats from your friends. Wouldn't fix problem #1 though.

    3. Can't exist in a game that isn't replayable. Something that needs to be paired with this loot bit is randomization of actual levels and bosses and such - there's a reason all of this is being pimped so hard with Hellgate: London (SAVE ME FLAGSHIP), and there's a reason why PSU fails so bad, and there's a reason WoW will never have a loot system better than say... EQ.

    4. There needs to be many tiers and sister types to the tiers - the set system was a good start, but I imagine Blizzard or Flagship will expand on this for the appropriate titles.

    5. Class, level, and stat specific loot. Level specific loot is so... passe. We need, Thief Only, Dex 100 required on this shit. This is the ultimate carrot. Sure, you may be in a dungeon and kill something that drops a kickass sword - but you can't use it yet. What do you do? You grind to the point of using it of course. And then you grind some more because you just found a kickass pair of boots but you dumped all your points into dex when you leveled and you need more points in strength. Just one more time through Travincal, just one more time.

    6. Most importantly? Tangible differences between every item. This is key. When I equip a short sword, I expect to see a shortsword - when I requip an icy short sword, I expect to see some sort of particle effect or different color blade. The most recent game that comes to mind that nails this is Summon Night 1 & 2 for the GBA from Atlus/Flight Plan.

Anyway, yea. There aren't any MMOGs out with this done right. They're all missing one or more of the things above. Most fuck up on #6, which is just goddamn unacceptable.

    Thillian,

You may not like Diablo and say it was a horrible RPG but the bottom line is that it was fun and thats all i(and most people) care about in video games.

When Diablo 1 came out I was pretty much THE computer game nerd. I wasn't on the internet, I wasn't exposed to hype or forums or other gamers. I was the lone kid after football practice who got to install a demo of a game made by the same company that brought me my favorite game at the time, Warcraft II.

I played Diablo and loved it for the action mixed with "rogue" style. When we finally got the internet, it was the first online game I would ever play for hours and meet with people and take on dungeon crawls and look for loot without a text based command interface. Everquest and UO weren't even out yet at this time.

So being told I only bought the game for hype and that I'm a sheep.......man, yeah, l'm going to call you names because they are descriptive terms to the kind of ass clown you're behaving like.
