Play EvE now, or wait for Fallen Earth, which is game still off the people's radar a bit. Looks like it is going to be really good.

You're asking for the holy grail. Skill based AND good graphics AND good pvp? If you're into space simulators, EVE could work for you, but if you're looking for a more traditional fantasy MMO, there's not really anything out or to be hyped over.

Yeah, there aren't really any good fantasy MMOs that fit what you want.  But EVE would be a good possibility.  I and many others would swear by it.  It's a hard game to learn how to play, but very rewarding in the long run.

Im thinking Age of Conan and Warhammer in the near future.  As of right now, the only game that seemed skill based and nicely balanced for PvP was City of Heroes.  The graphics however are a bit dated now.

Hmmm city of heroes/villains isnt skill-based but class-based , and warhammer and conan will be class-based aswelll , darkfall will be skill-based but when will that be released.....

eve... i tried the free trial and its not my cup of tea , i dont like to be a ship all the time...

    thx for the replies though

if I understand it right, you mean "skill-based" as opposed to "item-based", right?

  • JeridJerid Member UncommonPosts: 30

Skill Based MMORPGs are for example

    Ultima Online

Star wars Galaxies (it was... feel the pain right?)

basicly its a game that has no level system, Leveling is stupid because it discourages playing with friends

"Oh I'm sorry I can't party with you your 2 levels below me and that will nerf my exp" if you've played a MMO with levels you've heard that line.

Skill based MMO's are superior because you can play with anyone at anytime to do basicly anything you want, its true freedom.  Levels are pretty much brainless grinding.well so is a Skill system, however in a skill based system you can grind your skills out almost anywhere, it lends itself toward the Sandbox RPG because there is no need to have progression in "zone"

if you've played WoW you know about Zone progression, you start out in a green lush forrest and suddenly you walk 5 feet and your in a swamp, seems unrealistic and kinda ruins the RPG effect in my opinion.

A real good game would have zone "flow" skill based system for unrestricted play.  RATHER than Adding on Endgame Content that is basicly worthless (aka adding in new instances and dungeons) games should focus on adding in content that will be useful even after an expantion, aka PLAYER HOUSING or more PVP stuff to do.

basicly a skill based system works better because the developers are focused on filling a game with CONTENT rather than making a linear game that plays more like a SINGLE player game that happens to have other people on it RATHER than an actual MMO

I really don't consider WoW an MMO because it plays more like a Consol game, infact it should have been released on Consols I bet it would have done well.

sorry to go a little off topic, no there are no good Skill based MMO's out there right now, however DARKFALL is the game that i'm watching, and i'm Praying to the MMO gods it is everything I wanted.

    Happy Gaming folks!

@negenelf: so in that case eve would be probably a good choice (if you have also only a slight affinity to space ships. imo it maybe lacks a bit on the gameplay side, but thousands of star-systems should be good enough (at least for me ^^)

I was searching the forums for the same thing and found this thread, thought I'd bring it back up and see if any skill based MMO's have been announced since this threads origination date of January 2008.... I would like a skill based MMO as well, but I also want plenty of lore, story and quests. UO wasn't much for me, because there was nothing to do but grind everything out, I shouldn't have to 'create' my own storylines, adventures/quests, the programmers should.

Saga of Ryzom is dead, you can't play it, the company went under.

    Aoc isn't skill-based, it's level-based.

    Warhammer isn't skill-based, it's level-based.

    CoH/CoV isn't skill-based, it's level-based.

The only game that is currently skill-based is EVE Online.  In the near future Fallen Earth is coming out and it will be skill-based.

Other than that you have to pray Darkfall launches.  Infiniti Earth is also a skill-based MMO deep into development that is skill-based.

    Tecmo Bowl.

Not officially dead, yet.  Maybe status at the moment.  A new company got a hold of it, says they have big plans.  Hopefully they can pull an Istaria and actually bring it back and do a better job than the old team.

    Ryzom is alive again!

It is totally skill based, and unlike EvE, advancement is not based on mere time, but on use of a skill. You actually have to go out and attack stuff to level your attack skills; you can't learn it in your sleep like EvE :)

You can be lvl 50 at healing, and lvl 150 at melee, and engage at either level. The real thing.

I have seen this post alot and have seen the same answers and they usually lead to EVE and  although you can build skills up in EQ2 it really isn't "based" on it and CoH/CoV is sort of skill based, its more based on how you choose your abilities over levels and how well you play your character. So if your looking for a "skill based game" go EVE but if you are looking for a "game that takes skill" go CoH/CoV

When is Ryzom coming back? F2P, P2P?

    What about this Mortal Online?

Mortal Online basically promises all the same things Darkfall does, except at this point I'd say its even more vaporware. They just launched the site this year and they're going to launch Spring 2009. They don't even have 5 screenshots on the site yet, and only one pre-rendered movie running on an amazing graphics engine they're trying to say is the in game engine. (there is no way possible to have the massive PvP battles with collision detection and twitch gameplay with those kind of graphics, AoC proved that) But we'll see.

"Oh I'm sorry I can't party with you your 2 levels below me and that will nerf my exp" if you've played a MMO with levels you've heard that line."

Before I begin, I fully admit that I am a class based guy invading enemy territory and trying to make a point without seeming trollish.

As for the above... I can't agree. What the heck does helping young (young in levels I mean) players have to do with XP? It is two seperate experiences, friend. It is not my fault that all you have met is greedy XP whores.

Heck, I've done variations of this in many mmogs. Buffs and heals are the key to newbie help. A lot of times you don't even group with them.

But, your right... it's a freaking me me me world. But don't blame that on game systems, my friend.

    Carry on!

  • EmeraqEmeraq Member UncommonPosts: 1,063

Even in skill based games, there can still be limitations to grouping. Sure, you can't blame it on levels, but you can blame it on lower strength, lower hp, lower dex, lower mana etc.  Take UO, I could go anywhere with anyone and they wouldn't have to worry about me bringing down their EXP but if they are out fighting Titans, and my HP,  STR, and skills are too low to really be there, I'm a hindrance to them in other ways... IE trying to keep me healed, rezzing me when that Titan two hit kills me etc... So, you can see the same, "you're not strong enough yet to adventure with me" whether it's skill based, or level based, it's really two sides of the same coin.

    Well said!

What ever happened to having fun with your friends and meeting new people? Does it ALL have to be about new skills, powers and levels?

Damn, that's why I am not currently subscribed to anything. I even bought a game engine. You laugh, but I am not some kid and I am also a project manager in RL. Google Realmcrafter. Cost you $100. Even if you never make a game, it is still like getting a chemistry set from your dad when you were 13. Hehehe.

In any case, in my humble opinion, half the problem with mmogs today is the PLAYERS, not the systems.

Anyone here remember naked newbie races? That was back when people who knew how to have fun made things fun.
