Difference between Illusionists and Coercers?

shadout00shadout00 Member Posts: 253

I've been around EQ2 since launch but I never understood this. Whats the difference between the two? I know they get some different buffs but for the most part are they the same?

Appreciate if someone would go indepth about this and explain. I would like to roll an enchanter but I don't know which to choose.

    Solo or group?

    Solo they play hugely different.

Group they are sorta the same.

In Solo the illusionist gets his own pet that he can just summon as a clone of himself. Much safer then Coercer, but it's slow going.

The Coercer gets to charm mobs that once it breaks randomly the mob will pummel your face in. The coercer can be extremely powerful, but it's very risky.

In groups the major difference is the types of buffs they get. Illusionist gets Haste buff and Coercer gets DPS buff. Beyond that they both get mana regen.. they both mez.. etc

Coercer DOES do more damage then Illusionist though. Illusionist has a lot of utility to compensate. They get a crap ton of stuns due to pet casting them as well.

I used to play as a Coercer in EQ2 a long time ago so I might be wrong about this.

Besides what has been said already, I think Coercer is evil side only as well as Illusionist is good side only. If my memory serves me right I think Coercer was categorized as one of the most difficult classes to play in EQ2. Many give up early, but those who manage to get through the difficult times and learn how to play the Coercer can indeed become very powerfull.

One of the difficult parts for the Coercer is to find a good victim to use as a pet /grin. However, the more powerfull your pet is the more dangerous it will be for you if you loose control of the pet.

Overall I think Coercer was one of the most fun classes I played in EQ2, frustrating at some times but also a lot of good moments.
