First let me tell you about me and my history in Eve,
With my 3.5 years playing Eve Online I consider myself as a veteran, but please don’t believe I know everything about the game. That’s the beauty of this game you never stop learning.
The sad part is that due to RL issues I had to leave the game but so far it feels like I did the right decision J
During my time I have done almost everything that is possible with a few exceptions like POS and Ship production, something that is really not my cup of tea.
Enough about me, let’s get started with the interested part of this topic; the idea is to give you guys/girls thinking of start playing the game some hints on how to get a good start and become a good Eve Pilot.
Once again iam not saying I know everything but this will be useful for many of you.
First of all before you start playing make sure you read about each and one of the races in the game, they are all good and bad depending on what you looking for. But I strong recommend you go for Gallente or Minmathar. They are in my opinion the best all-round races and best in PVP.
Once you have decided what race you will create your chars ass, don’t forget to read on how you have to divide the attribute points you get when creating a new char. Why? Well the higher attributes you have on a particular section the less time it will take your char to train the skills needed. If you want to be a PVP player you will have as many attribute points possible in Perception and willpower, this two are the attributes that affect the skills you will need to become a good pvp pilot. Once again read before you create you character or you will regret it.
Make sure your char is specialized character and trains skill that give him less time, pvp char trains pvp skills ONLY. Mining char trains of course mining skills and so on.
Now let’s move a bit further in the game, at this point you already have your char and have done your TUTURIAL, whatever you do DON’T IGNORE THIS you will need it.
OK. So now you should have done the tutorial and flying around in the big eve universe all alone in your brand new ship. What I would do at this point is to find me a corporation to join; there are tons of rookie corps for you to apply. There will help you get started and help you with all the information you need to keep your progress going forward.
One thing that I recommend is to get your training skills up until they are at advanced lvl4. This will take some time but if you are serious about playing you will not regret doing that. The higher you have your learning skills the less time it will take for you skills to end, and after a few years you will safe weeks on each skill, time you can put on better useJ
If you train your learning skills it means you won’t be able to do much accept mining with your small ship, this will not give you much money but it will give you tons of time to read more on how you are going to keep training your char, what setups to get for the ships you want to fly etc and of course get yourself more familiar with the game mechanics and terminology.
Once you are done with the learning skills, I would say 1.5month or so. You can start thinking more into your next step for your char.
Here below you will get some few points you have to have in mind.
· Don’t share your skills, keep your character specialized, that means, Pvp characters train pvp skills and so on.
· Don’t fly ships you can’t fit well, I would say if you can fit Tech II equip on all slots don’t fly the ship.
· Bigger ships are not better if you can’t fit the properly. You are just giving an easy kill.
· Big ships don’t have to be more deadly than smaller ones; you have to hit to make some damage. Bigger ships have normally slower tracking on targets = less hits.
· Don’t fly ships that you can’t afford to lose.
· Keep yourself out of low sec or you will give an easy kill.
· Travel only through high sec systems.
· Never travel AFK in high sec with expensive cargo hold. Why? You will get killed by suicide pilots J believe me I use to be one, funny like hell.
· Don’t trust anyone.
· Never agree on 1vs1, most people are not honorable enough.
What I recommend you to do is to start doing missions and get some money until you have a decent ship and tech II fittings and money to spare to cover you loses. If you want to be really effective you get yourself an alt character that will be a production/miner/hauler character that will be your slave when doing mission.
In time your alt will be have good skills in refining the loot and will be able to loot everything that you leave behind and refine that for minerals that you can use to build ships or just sell on market for game money.
I recommend that your alt should fly a Gallente destroyer called Catalyst, With this ship your alt will be able to fit 4 tractor beams and 4 salvagers. In addition to this the ship will have a good amount of cargo hold with tech II cargo expanders. But don’t forget this ship is paper thin and will get destroyed fast if you are not careful, make sure your main have full agro before you send in your alt that should be fine J
Doing this you will get the bounties from the NPC’s you kill and the mineral from the loot you refine, in time you have a nice pile of minerals your alt chars can make something of or like I said before just sell on market.
I would say that you should stay out of low sec until you have AT LEAST a tech II cruiser and know how to fly it in combat. Being an ex Gallente pilot I have a deep love for the Thorax Gallente Cruiser ship. They are really good especially if you have some friends with you J.
Once you are good enough to try the more dangerous zones in the game called low sec before you decide to enter 0,0. There are several things you have to have in mind here as well.
· Most gates leading into low sec are going to be camped by nice pilots called Pirates; these guys will kill you if they get their hands on you nice sweet ship.
· Send in a rookie alt character to scout the gate so is clear for you to jump in.
· KEEP an eye on local chat.
· Look up ALL THE PILOTS you have in local with you.
· Consider all pilots in low sec hostiles, this will keep you alive.
· Don’t accept any gang invitation or they will warp to you and you will be DEAD.
· Don’t smack talk at all, it looks just back in local J
· Make sure you make at least 3-4 save spots in each system you are going to operate in.
· Save spots are NOT AS SAVE AS YOU WANT THEN TO BE, keep warping between spot every 10sec and if you can dock as soon as possible, or you will give out the bmks to the hostile pilot/s
· Use teamspeak ALL THE TIME and specially in low sec and 0,0.
· Sort out your overview so you remove all the crap you are not interested in or at least make sure you have several different setups for your overview that should different information depending on what you are about to do. Tex, if you are going to be mining you want your overview to show you all the sweet roids in the belts. If you are PVPing then that information in NOT NECESSARY, get the point.
· Make sure you character have a clone activated you will needed J
· Bring enough ammo to do whatever you need to do J
· In low sec hostile pilots are NEVE ALONE, so be careful and don’t give easy kills. If you engage make sure you have backup nearby to kick ass with.
For 0,0 there are some other things you have to keep in mind.
· All the stuff above for low sec applies for 0.0 as well.
· NEVER LOG OFF in a pos, next time you log back on the pos could be siege and being camped by hostiles. Not a good thing to do.
· Keep Intel channels open and of course an eye on them to keep track on hostile movements.
· IF you are npcing I recommend to place two giant secure containers around a planet where you can save the loot. Once they are full then you can send in your alt to pick the loot up. If you have a pos in the system put the containers around it, safer for your alt and make sure the standings are set properly.
I guess this is enough for this time, I hope this have helped you on the way.
IF you have any questions or similar just get back to me. Sorry for the spelling.

Noone is forcing you to learn certain skills.... you learn them for a reason; if you are going to play for a long period of time, training the learning skills pays off. What did I do when I was training my learning skills? Learned to pvp.

Truthfully, I mixed it up a bit, training the basic learning skills up a bit (say level 3) at first which is quick, then got some skills flying destroyers/cruisers, then pushed basics to 4, then got BC's then went for broke and got advanced skills up to 3 etc. Took a bit longer (2 weeks) but it let me fly cruisers before I ever got out of the 15 day trial.Despite the good intentions of the OP, some of his advice is a bit skewed by his 3.5 years of veteran status, like only fly ships with Tech 2 gear. Decent advice for the PVP ranks of 0.0, but for PVE efforts tech one is great until you train the skills needed for Tech 2. Good thing too, because some Tech 2 skills are real easy to get, but all of the Turret/Launcher skills take significant amount of time (month or more for the large skills) and shouldn't be attempted until a bit later in your career.)
In fact, my main PVP ship is a Stealth Bomber, and I fly it using Tech 1 launchers with faction missiles. Does the same amount of damage and I'd never be able to fit the tech 2's, even though my launcher skills are all level 5 for the most part. (along with appropriate eng and other skills)

Yeah I would have to agree with you. About 80% of the information is spot on but some of the other stuff is not essential to survival.
