Age of Conan is almost here.. Is this the "real deal" or just another super hyped up let down?

Zaxx99Zaxx99 Member Posts: 1,761

Okay.. I must confess that Age of Conan looks like the real deal. The graphics look insane. The game sounds addicting and fun as hell. Is this really gonna be the best mmo in the past 7 years, or is this just another let down?

Remember all the hype and how damn good games like 'Dark and Light' looked a couple years before it launched. Vanguard was the most recent huge let down. Theres been many others as well.

So is "Age of Conan" the real deal?

Why or why not?

I've had a singular approach to new games that has served me well for years.

I know almost nothing about them.

I know the name, and I know some general features (whether it's PVP-centric, PVE-centric, etc...) but I try to pay no attention to anything else.

What this does for me is to ensure that when the game arrives I have an opportunity to be objective and see how I feel about the game experience. I rarely get hyped about any game and that means I don't have unreal expectations that no game can live up to.

I do listen a little to what beta testers have to say...not so much the content of their comments as the tone and quantity of comments. If almost everyone says the game sucks, I am a bit wary. But if I see a mix of "love it" and "hate it" (which is about the best any game will ever get) then I know it's a solid candidate for some fun.

    I recommend it to anyone.

That's kinda how I am too now honestly. When Vanguard released last year, I really didn't know much about it at all. I saw all the different opinions about it as these boards were flooded with arguments about it. So that made me decide to try it when someone offered me their free 10 day pass they had got with the game. While I liked a lot of what it was trying to do, it wasn't my game at all. World just seemed WAY too big and not nearly enough players as I walked for literally hours without seeing more then a couple of other players.

After being letdown so hard after being excited for "Dark and Light" with all its promises and hype for about 3 years before it finally launched, I honestly think I am scared to put much hope or time into anticipating ANY game for very long now days.

So I saw that this game is almost here (March release) and finally actually looked at it a little. It really does sound like a great game and the screenshots are nothing short of awesome. The magic spell screenshots look damn nice as well. It looks like it's something too much for my AMD Dual core 4200+, 2 GB ram, and Nvidia 6800 XS to handle actually.

Anyhow, I am hoping it's even half as good as it sounds. If it is, then I think the mmo community is truly in store for a real treat with this one!

If it runs good & looks good on my pc, then it will be a game i hope to say with. However, just because my pc might meet the games requirements doesnt mean it will run well or look good (just like VG and thats nearly a year old), so i'm going to approach the game with caution. I'll be able to vote in your poll on the 25th of March, when i'll know for sure what the game will be like.

Don't know, Age of Conan has not released yet.

These days you can't tell if an MMO is going to be good until it is released. Even then it's only fair to give it about a month to fix some of the lauch problems.

If it still sucks THEN you can write it off as a failure.

It totaly depens on what you demand and what you exspect, one person may exspect huge thing and will mosty be disapointed in the end, or the power levelers that also get bored fast, i also know people that are pleased easly those are mostly the more casual types. But i will devently try it out , and if i enjoy meslef for over 4 mounths whit a mmo i think i was very well pleased even if i stop then or if it becomes boring. No game last forever, ever game will get bored in the end , thou some tend to last a lot longer. Mmo are best to stop when you get bored and come back afther an exspansion or update, but most people get addicted whit it wich is wrong imo, i dont understand why some people think a game sould last years before its anything good.

    Playing: World of Warcraft.
Played: Lord of the Rings Online, Starwars Galaxies.
Tried: Starwars the Old Republic, Everquest 2, Guild Wars, Vanguard, Age of Conan, Aion.

No Open Beta  ==  Super Hyped Let Down

There is a reason they don't want a lot of outside folks looking at this thing before it goes on sale.

    Think about it.

I'm taking the cautiously optimistic approach and hope that its awesome but not investing a lot in the idea that it'll be the next great mmo. I will come out and say that I am looking forward to warhammer, but I don't think its good for the genre if there is only one hit in a given year or a given period.

    It's gonna be like Vanguard

I think it is overhyped just like every other mmo that is coming out these days because people are looking for the next big thing.I give Funcom credit for being different by not doing the orc , elf scene which we have seen a gazillion times over.It won't be anything revolutionary but it will be a solid alternative for those who want something different.

do i think it will be a good game.. yes

do i think it will live up to the hype... probably not.

Hype is just that.. hype. People can give you an outline of a game and then say what they feel abotu that outline. Some say this is going to be incredible, some say it going to be crap. You should just read the outline of the game, watch some videos of it, and decide for yourself.

It wont be a WoW killer, but it will definitely be the biggest MMO to be released in the past 2 years.  What little I demod of it was very good and very polished.

im also glad to see theyre holding an NDA until it releases.  The same thing can be done in an NDA closed beta that can be done with an open beta, it just takes more effort to invite enough people to flood the servers.

No open beta definetly means something is wrong with the game.

But i think the WRONG is actually good.

I think AOC is actually very complicated MMO. It has a bit steeper learning curve than let say WOW or LOTRO.

This might put off some people that play open BETA to get the "feel" of the game

AoC will be great if they stay true to Howards vision, if not then why put the Conan name on it. It will be better than Vanguard. It will not kill WoW and will probably not reach WoW numbers because it is not a game that grannys and bankers will want to play IMHO. AoC will find its market, have its loyal followers and 10 years from now people will post "Why is this game still around?" or "AoC is dead the devs should close the servers." like we do with UO and EQ.

Their are 2 one sentence comment like this. Please give your reasons for thinking that AoC will be like Vanguard. Posting one sentence without reasons really does nothing for a discussion.

How many highly succesful, critically acclaimed movies don't get sent out for screening beforehand?  Case closed people.  Since when does a developer NOT want its game stress tested to heck to get some good buzz going before release?  Blizzard and Turbine certainly didn't mind with WOW and LOTR.  Right now, the buzz is quite mixed because no one really knows much of anything about AoC except what we can read.  The videos show very little.  Has there been one decent video of mass PvP yet?  Nope!  How can a game that mostly focuses around PvP at its endgame not even show one decent seige.  All we got was an edited hacked together preview with a bunch of NPC standins.

Every single video has loads of sliding animation and lag.  How many more times will people fall for the, "its a bad connection" excuse FC has been using for the past few months?  How many videos do we need to see that show the same animations over and over again with people just standing there hardly moving, while FC goes and says, "they're not really using combos".  How about loading up FRAPS, sticking your lead testers on there for 5 minutes and show us how its SUPPOSED to be played.  How hard is that?

Get real people.  AoC might be good eventually but its obviously not ready yet and keeping a tight NDA and not having an open beta pushes that point home.  Put 2 and 2 together.  There hasn't been a great MMO yet with a developer keeping as much as possible in a cloud of mystery.

huge let down to a lot of people.   even if it runs perfectly smooth on computers below recommended recs.  basically they've been running the hypometer for too long and to the wrong crowd of MMOers.

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

i dont think that anything will stop wow, or the fanbase of it but im sure conan is still going to shred almost everything else that already are on the market, not sure what happens when warhammer and spellborn goes puplic. BUT if it were to happen that Conan would make an epic failure (which prolly wont) it would make many people quite frustrated and mad..

i really hope that the beginning isnt too rough. im a bit concerned about the fact that there wont be any open beta but i think that they thought so many signed up for beta that they really cant let everyone in right now because they are pretty busy with other things

As much as I think this game looks cool, I think alot of it is hype, I really want to play it but think I'll give it a month or two after release before buying it. Don't want to waste my money on another mmo and not play it ala vanguard.

You answered it with your Vote choice....

"Age of Conan will be a solid, great game..

for those that like it's gameplay and hardcore elements of mmo games."

    You get what you EXPECT.

Some have realistic expectations while others will be let down by their irrational or negative perspective.

Last but not least...why does it HAVE to be compared to WoW?

its not that they cant show a seige its that they probaly dont want to...   people take things they see in videos then add thing they think are gonna be there but arent actualy in the video wich leads to hype...

there usally is lag in closed beta... there still optimizing ...               and the videos ive seen really arent very laggy...

or they learned from the overhype vanguard had and there trying to make it so they dont make the same mistake and release to much info.
