I think mighty Athelan said, that everyone, who applayed for beta spot will have chance to tray game before release day.
Funcom don't need to announce beta open, but only invite all of as, who applayed.

I applied a year ago when i had that shitty PC and it wouldnt run divx10 at all, now that I have one that runs crysis perfectly in max settings with LineageII on at the same time, I cant seem to change it on my application, so no faith here.
At this point, that isn't the way to bet. But who knows, you could be right, I just wouldn't count on it.

In the new mmorpg.com interview posted today, Jason said there will not be an open beta. They already have 15,000 invitations sent and that is more than enough for a true test period that isn't just a free preview. Even 5000 actual testers should be enough to test the game as well as stress test the servers. He did mention that many more people will get a chance to join beta before release,
I wondering, at what point if any will there be a free trial type of thing. Many people will think no open beta means the game must be flawed and they want you to purchase the game to find out. Whether its buggy, performs poorly or just plain sucks, you will have to pay the $$ before you can find out for yourself.
But at the same time, they could be confident in thier product and don't feel they need to have an open beta in order for people to know how great it trully is. The game already has plenty of attention, if it is as good as everyone hopes at release, you will definately hear about it from the people who already play.
It could go either way, but i'm looking forward to playing a great new game, and i should know if this is it within a couple months so i can't wait to find out.
Your scenario sounds spot on to me. They have a list of people they know want to play the game. And odds are that list of people will be more usefull than people hanging around waiting to just play a new game rather than test it.
I wouldn't be surprised if everyone on the list eventually gets an invite.

But use a different email address.
I know it says submitting more than one app will disqualify you (or at least it used to say that), but a moderator in the AoC forum said you could do so as an answer to the question of how to update your dxdiag there.
No beta.....better off that way really.
1. new email address
2. own name misspelled in a new way
3. modified DxDiag file (can be the same computer)
