Okay first of all I just want to say that I don't intend this as a trolling post, and I hope it doesn't turn into a flame war.
In another thread on the boards I noticed a bunch of people saying that one of AoCs benefits is that it's doing things that are new and different from the norm. When I read this though, I began to wrack my brain as I couldn't really come up with what I thought they were talking about. Now I know Conan will be including sexual themes and whatnot, or atleast before it gets censored so they can have an M rating and not AO, but that can't be what people are talking about is it? Maybe I just haven't been able to find the right information or look at it the right way. This is why I'm coming to you guys for help.
So if you could please, enlighten me on what new things AoC brings to the table. What does AoC have that's different from the norm? What makes AoC so unique? Also if you'd like, feel free to include the things that make you look forward to the game. What do you like about it and what features make this the game for you?

It doesn't do anything new,nothing revolutionary,zilch.
It takes everything that makes other games sweet, and combines it into one game.
Great combat system
Player made cities (in and out of pvp)
Free for all pvp
Tits and gore (call me immature if you want, but I like it in a game)
Huge 200 player siege battles
Great Graphics
Mounted Combat
A spell system where you can combine spells to create mega spells, but if over-done will back fire on caster
The abilty to form formations, even for mounted units
Realistic "lived in" atmosphere
Rich back story
They have delayed time and again to tweak and polish and add to the game time and again, they are commited to making all of theses features polished and functioning
Speech "tree's" (like what mass effect has or kotar)
You get to chop somebody's freakin' head off!! (fatalities)
Now provided that all of this is just by the assumption that the devs will deliver, but you can see the possibilities. No,it isn't new,it is just all of what you wanted and more.
- Unique combat system.
- Mounted Combat.
- Ability to manually dodge attacks

Forgive me for blatantly copy and pasting my own post, its too late to write a new one.
Items never before seen in other MMOs:
-spellweaving
-soul corruption
-semi to exceptionally realistic mounted combat, most other systems can only be considered broken at best.
-true collision detection, including characters getting the crap trampled out of them by aforementioned cavalry.
-formation combat that actually means something tactically, and doesn't leave players screaming at their leaders to turn it off so they don't all die (Shadowbane anyone?)
-crafting levels advanced by quests, not grinding.
Items that have been used only rarely, and are usually ignored by the average developer:
-skill/level hybrid system, properly done, this embodies the best of both worlds.
-overarching storyline that is constantly and consistantly in motion
-guild city sieges, both PvE and PvP
-voiceover NPC communication with multiple dialogue options (Think Oblivion)
-customizable equipment
Items that have been significantly improved over what is commonly seen on the market:
-Combat AI: A lone enemy might run, set up an ambush and/or get help from its pack/band/nest/etc. before attacking if it feels outmatched. Enemies of all kinds are likely to go for the weakest in a crowd, people trying to "tank" will have to physically block their path.
-out of combat AI: The cities are alive with activity as NPCs fulfill their current "needs". Think a couple hundred Sims left on their own, only these guys don't piss themselves out of stupidity. NPCs, and the people they know, will treat you differently depending on what they know (and what they think they know) about you. For example, that widow you helped out before might wave and give you a much warmer greeting than before you did the related quest, whether or not you actually engage her in conversation.
-Whatever the final result of the debate over raiding may be, Its been shown quite clearly that even if there is any advantage towards raiders and their gear, said advantage is minimal at worst.

fatalities were already done too.

Interesting stuff. The Spellweaving, Soul Corruption, and Mercenary systems sound interesting, could you tell me basically what they entail?
I think the combat stuff has been done before, like the manually controlled combat which I believe DDO did.
It is nice to see unique systems all collected into one game to work well together, and it helps that these appear to be good systems too.

Althought risk is being implemented in more than one game right now.

Other additions to the genre include:
- Exclusive character levels for PVP
- Exclusive character levels as a Mercenary
- Battle Keeps where players physically build the defenses themselves from scratch and having to gather the materials themselves to do so
- First Person shooting so that you can control how much damage your shots deal to different areas of your opponents body
- An unpresendented mob AI system
- The combat system should be mentioned again. For those of you who think the combat system is not revolutionary you need to provide specific examples of MMORPG's that have implemented this system to this detail before
All in all I hope the OP learned something from this. Im tired of people talking about AOC and WAR like little babies. Both games are adding great new concepts to the genre and a lot of people on this board need to stop spreading their ignorance by pulling information directly out of their a$$. Thats my 2 cents.
Peace
::EDIT::
In regards to the OP who asked about Spellweaving, Soul Corruption, and Mercenary I believe i mentioned some of these things in my post but I will try to elaborate here for you.
The spell weaving system in AOC means that as a caster you will be able to chain a sequence of spells together that will unleash a much more powerful spell upon completion. This concept will work for damage spells as well as buff and heal spells which in and of itself should reveal just how much depth will be involved in the spell weaving system. Healers will be less bored and buffing will take more than a single click to accomplish. I hope this cleared spell weaving up a little bit.
The soul corruption system is a result of the spell weaving system. Because spell weaving allows casters to be much more efficient and powerful, if a player meddles too often in spell weaving they will have different negative side effects that are inflicted upon them. I am uncertain whether anything but death is inflicted upon a caster who meddles too much in spell weaving but things such as your character getting incinerated, having demons reach up from hell and drag you under and exploding in a big puff of smoke are all fair game.
The mercenary system in AOC will be quite involved. Mercenaries will be able to be hired by other players in situation such as defending a battle keep and other pvp-oriented objectives. A mercenary is a player who aids their contractor for a money payment. Mercenaries in AOC will have 5 different levels of mercenary that they can attain and the higher level you are the more other players will want to hire you rather than any other mercenary in the realm. In other words, the better you are at accomplishing tasks for your contractors, the hire level mercenary you will become and the more future contractors will want to higher you to do their bidding.
Again, I hope this edit answered some of your questions
You do understand no one was talking about WAR, right?
Everything I labeled has already been implemented in other games. If you would like me to post a link explaining each of them I would be more than happy to (excluding fatalities, that is not my input).
Also, I'm sorry but attempting to insult my intelligence on these forums will not make you more knowledgeable. It is in fact, rather childish.
Peace
Cheers AccountSiggy.
The poster in question is one of many have been correcting for the last year now.
If AoC had released when it should of then it would of been the first mmorpg to be in Dx10.
The Original Poster states not only unique but also what you look forward to.
Obviously for some the points he asks for are to do with mmorpg's NOT other genre games.
Really would love for you someone to go get a game name (mmorpg) that has omething like Spellweaving and Soul Corruption in it. (Both points were announce a long time ago now for inclusion in game, and since are being copied by other games in beta)
From Age of Conan FAQ on main website:
7.3 What is spellweaving? Spellweaving is the art of combining multiple spells into one big spell. The player will start the spellweave by activating their spellweave ability. This places them in a trance-like state where they cannot move and the only actions they are allowed to perform are adding more components to the weave. Once in the spellweave the player can add as many spells into the weave as they can manage or want to. The maximum number of spells that can be called into a weave is dependant on the players level. Deactivating the ability will then cast the spell and produce the results.
7.4 Are there any dangers associated with spellweaving? Very much, yes. Spellweaving is almost a balancing act. How much power can you summon forth without incurring some ancient curse or other mysterious ailment? The risk of this depends on how powerful a weave you are performing based upon the power of the spells you are trying to combine and their level. Stray too far beyond what you are capable of and you will run the risk of incurring one of these side-effects! Using more mana than what you have can also be devastating.
7.5 But can you spellweave as much as you want? Yes, but there are penalties if you are spellweaving too much and too often. The other element to spellweaving is a characters magical burden. Every time a weave is performed they incur a magical burden, a debt as it were that weighs upon them. If too many weaves are attempted consecutively, or you attempt a weave that pushes your limits to the burden, you will increase the chance of incurring ill-effects on the next weave. This burden naturally decays when a caster is not in a spellweave.
The fact that the war fan doesnt offer anything constructive or suggestions just makes him look
The point is people here mainly think all these things that we have seen before will be implemented better in AoC or will look better! Can't handle that? then fine, have your opinion, be constructive and back it up in the context of the post. Otherwise have a nice day!
AoC is doing things differently, doing familar things differently - with some new stuff thrown in - read topic title again..
Welcome to the AoC boards!
Ignorance is not a lack of intelligence, it is a lack of information which is specifically why I used that terminology because I didn't want to discredit your intelligence. I only mentioned WAR because the AOC and WAR communities are at odds with each other and often make claims about each other's game that are complete and utter fabrications.
As for providing evidence, I would gladly appreciate anything that you can put together to validate your claims.
Sorry guys i don't have much time, so soz if i repeat anything, ok one of the new things is mounted combat.*woot*, so fighting with weapons while on a mount.
Another thing I* Believe to be new is to be able to guide the weapon after swinging it, so once yo thrust the sword you can change its direction, and...
Finnaly this may not be new but it may be the first time it is done well, In game housing, so a place to store weapons, loot and damsels...not.

(often meaning one is unintelligent)
Looks like we are both correct.
But lets not get .
I'm impressed with the evidence that you came up with shifty and grateful for the citations.
I do however think, and hope you would agree with me, that at the scale and depth that all of these features are being implemented at that Funcom is taking the genre in a new direction. While you did prove to me that many of the "new" features of AOC were touched on in previous games I hope that you would agree that AOC is taking those basic implementations to an entirely new level.
Of course they are, naturally.
I don't know jack about this game and don't plan on playing it. Regardless I saw the topic on the Home page and felt that another arguement on these forums wouldn't hurt and maybe someone would toss some information in my face. Always good to know a little about the game you don't play.
Atleast I got a few facts out of it.
So where is the revolutionary combat ? I don't see it anywhere !
Just go away Battle before we chase you off yet again, you have yet to add anything remotely resembling a constructive post or argument to these forums.

Tabula Rasa has fatalities. They vary by enemy and weapon used to kill the enemy. The include things like head explosions, full implosion, burnt to a a crisp, frozen and then broken, etc. So, TR beat AoC to it.

Figured I would just add that to the list
MMOs Played: I can no longer list them all in the 500 character limit.
^^
Shadowbane does have formations, but because there is no collision detection, it is only used for traveling.
In AoC the formations will work hand in hand with collision detection and is planned to actually be useful during combat.
What is the fucking point of making that list ? Ofcourse nothing is new because almost anything has been done, its just that they need to be properly implemented in ONE single game.
