I'll never play this game due to the fact that it involves pirates. There is nothing remotely cool about being a pirate, IMO. I'm surprised people actually thought it would be a good idea to make a "Pirate" MMO. It will be interesting to see the number of subscribers it gets. My guess is this game flops. 100k subs at most, and thats stretching it. No match for the Warhammer juggernaut. My $0.02

If the game flops, I doubt it will be because it involves pirates. More likely it'd flop because of other issues like repeatative missions or avatar combat (problems others have stated with the game).
On a side note, who ever said this or any MMO had to be a match for Warhammer? To me, these two MMOs are so vastly different, it's doubtful there would be any competition between the two at all.

Not to get into a PoTBS vs. WAR debate because I will play both but WAR is really just a WoW clone but something a little different. Also, 100k subs is pretty good imo. That should be more than enough for the FLS guys to keep giving me my Pirate fun.
Potbs is a niche ship vs ship combat & economic-crafters game that will keep a core amount of players happy. FLS will be happy with 50k subs in 2008. They will also get royalty payments from eastern countries for their versions of Potbs. Potbs is not likely to appeal to the mass market but FLS don't care bout it. As long as they make a little profit to get their wages paid plus some payback for dev costs all will be fine for the future
I read somehwere (can't remember where, but it was a post from one of the devs) that if they only had 1% of the subs that WoW has, they would be exalted. So yes, they are not aiming for huge subscriber numbers.

I honestly think that it is a waste of money, Voyage Centuries is so much better. In PotBS, you only have to turn your ship and click space bar basically, in Voyage Centuries it relies on you to actually sink the enemy ships.
Pirates of the Burning Sea is quite a boring game, the missions are basically the exact same and the sea combat is terrible, the only good thing, is the hand to hand combat.

The problem DJ is not to be or not to be a niche game, the number of subsriptions... The problem is that this is a bad game. EvE is also a niche game, however its a very good game.
The problem is exact this... The market need so much something new, that even this thing will have some subscribers. The game is bad in almost all parts. Right now I did remeber the fight on deck, when I shoot the enemy captain and all enemy crew just turn to you, of the same way and come to you like hastly, like robots (or bees). Its ridiculuous, its bad programming. Except if you mean niche game as a bad designed game, a market pie which is hoping for an awfull game, then its ok, its a niche game for the people looking for a bad game.
I, myself, was dying of anteipation for this game, I love pirate theme, I would be a target of that kind of game, however I am just disappointed and can only see how great this game would be. Still waiting for a good pirate game...
Gyrus, I agree with you assesment of the avatar combat in the mechanic sense that the balance and reactive defense tends to turn people off. This is not what my primary complaint is. I, just like you, was very interested in the combat system AT FIRST. But as you suspected, the pvp is where it goes sharply down hill. It is no system for pvp, the way it is currently implemented. Also, dirty fighting is rediculously broken (but could be balanced easily).
2nd, is that it is just far, far too repetitive. More a map issue, and also something that could be solved easily enough, and most likely will be, but the problem is that it has not yet been solved thus far.
If I were in love with pirates and sailing, this may be over-looked by the very solid ship combat. Fact is, I wanted to be a pirate in the sense of the lawlessness and free reign, and the game simply does not deliver that, and they come up a bit short on overall quality.
I really do hope this game does well, because I root for the little guy, and I feel that this angle has great potential. I am challenging them to prove me wrong and not accept ANY sub-par systems in this game.

Ah... well... yes. I never really did get to try PvP Avatar Combat so I have no idea how that works (if it works?).
And game experiance has shown me in the past that the same mechanic which works well in PvE can often fail in PvP and vice versa.
And defiantely yes on the same map issue.
I tend to agree with all the posters here saying "Don't expect any major changes (or fixes) between now and the 22nd."
There are always those that say "There are still 3 days to go! They have promised to fix / address this!". Well, that may be so - but look more on the 6 to 12 month time frame.
The problem is that this is a bad game. EvE is also a niche game, however its a very good game.
Keep in mind, EVE was a very bad game at launch, but through hard work by CCP and patience by its fans its grown to respectable game. PotBS can do the same thing if they can weather the initial launch.

Its a bad game in your opinion because you obviously have not yet got used to playing Potbs avatar combat.
Everyone expects it to be like other melee combat mmos but its more relevent to you managing your crew with skills.
yes if you shoot the enamy captain they will come on you but then u need to parry & manage your crew to attack the captain using the "follow me" skill.
Takes a while to get used to it but i find it fun and not too hard when you know how.
The same applies to many other Potbs ingame features - there is a steep learning curve but worthwhile if you take the time

Actually I played a lot the avatar because, sincerely, I WANTED to like this game... I picked this ´shoot the captain-everyone turn at you like robots´ as an example of bad game design.... ITs not that its hard or something of skills, its just too silly to see dozens of exactly the SAME avatar, suddenly turn to you, and come to you in the same fashion, with badly animation.. They just swarm to you... Fastly, really fast, like there is a rubber attaching them to me... ITs the graphics and the movement and the poor AI (they have the same AI, all of them, they all move to the same spot when aggroed the captain with a pistol, all of them...). It has very little to do with myself getting used to it and more about lazy developers to , at least, make it looks like individuals and not a swarm of pirates.

dude, even the die hards admit avatar combat blows...just stop, you are starting to look ridiculous.
steep learning curve??? A monkey could do about as well playing 50% of this game as any human.

well if i'm starting to look rediculous your comments top mine because they are rediculous!
i accept there will be many who will sit back that dont have the patience to lean how to play and think wtf - i did it myself several times in the early stages of playing Potbs.
i stuck with it & so far dont regret it; each to their own i guess.

It's "ridiculous".
Anyway, I kinda agree with the combat comment.
It really sucks, it's boring, very repetitive and just uninspired.
Wtf is there to learn about avcom. It’s boringly easy to figure out, I have been patiently waiting and trying this game since closed beta hoping that things will improve. I have tried all three types of swashbuckling and every style can be reduced to a snooze fest, firing off the same ability until the target dies. If anyone finds it difficult to get the hang of, I would suggest there is a malfunction somewhere between the chair and screen.
The entire game becomes boringly repetitive, so much so there is no need to read the quest text. Quests are reduced to click accept, open journal, "oh target is at this port", enter instance, spam space bar, use cursor keys once in a while, hand in rinse and repeat. The npc ship ai is so dumb it is embarrassing; at level 15, I was able to go out and start soloing and sinking level 50 targets with out ever feeling in danger. This game needs at least another 12 months of concerted effort to produce a polished product.
What’s most amusing are the fan boys, who for whatever reason believe come the 22nd the game will magically transform and the servers will fill to bursting. That just isn’t going to happen; you’re more likely to witness the second coming of Christ or alien contact from the Planet Zog between then and now. Most of the people likely to pick up this game have already done so during pre order looking to get a free head start and a couple of trinkets.
My Colour Is Vomit green, I puke on the tards with stupid colour sigs. My symbol is ,,!, O ,!,, My enemies are any prat with a colour sig, a meaningless personality test, or a pointless list of games and classes.

The funny thing is that the fanboys are so blind that now they are convinced that this thing is a sandbox game .. Even being the most limited MMO game I ever played.
Potbs swashbuckling is not the same as melee combat - Its more about crew management.
i prefer it to the usual hack & slash 1-1 melee encounters in most other mmos which would be hard to implement in any event on a crowded ship deck of players.
It does seem simplistic on the surface but after a while there is quite a bit of skill involved like
1. When to call re-inforcements,
2. When to use your pistol.
3. When to parry & call your men to surround the enemy captain.
4. When to run & use a bandage.
OK lots of impatient players will think its naff but i personally think its fun - so there you go!
Overall I like the game and it won me over enough to give it a go a month at launch - of course that was before the flashing patch got installed - they fix that I'll buy it and try it , if not just return the preorder and not
At least the 5 dollar preorder may save me a few bucks -

i accept there will be many who will sit back that dont have the patience to lean how to play and think wtf - i did it myself several times in the early stages of playing Potbs.
i stuck with it & so far dont regret it; each to their own i guess.

BTW, don't ever call anyone ridiculous if you can't even bother to spell it correctly.

I believe you brought it up - Its not a word i use often.
In any event i was refering to your monkey comments.

In one respect you are right you dont need a degree to enjoy the game; but knowing how best to play it helps
Perhaps its not for you - btw the game doesn't get going untill bout lvl30 or 2 weeks play.
