Big deal. That's why Blizzard has another MMO in the works. It doesn't matter what other MMO's are out, when Blizzard's new game hits the market, the others will all be crippled.
... Blizz will probably end up making WoW more the way it should have been, the way people want it, ultimately but by then, it will be way too late.
Ooooh kaayyie...
It is strange to see a post about a game dying wedged between the dozen other posts about the population hitting 10,000,000.
I am actually a brand new WoW player, so I have not seen any of the high end stuff. I've just seen a few of the starter areas on both sides of the battle. And have only taken a character up to 20th once (then deleted her and went to another world looking for a more active population.)
I think we have to keep in mind that when we talk about WoW, we are basically talking about the entire MMO market. (Aside from Lineage everything else combined only makes a rounding figure worth of player population when placed against WoW.) We have to remember that 10-million makes the next largest MMO (aside from Lineage I & II which is too weird for anyone outside of Asia to even look at without laughing) less than 1% of the WoW population.
Every single MMO (aside from Lineage) is a statistical zero in comparison.
Trust me, after a few weeks of playing this game, I honestly can't figure out why it is popular. It has lots of missions... so I guess that means it is "Content for the Win!"
But the characters are clunky, slow and uninteresting to play. I have not seen a team yet in these low levels that actually does anything together for any length of time. Like I said, whatever it is that makes people play this game I have yet to find it myself. BUT!
BUT BUT BUT !! This is the only game in the market. Nothing else matters. This game IS the MMO market. Whatever it is that people want in a game, over 99% of the people playing MMOs are finding it here.
All the talk about people wanting this or that or people not liking the grind or the ease of leveling or play or whatever other garbage... it simply isn't true. People vote with their purses and WoW gets over 99% of the non-asian market votes.
All the talk about WoW-Clones and games just trying to be like WoW is seriously rediculous. None of the other games have even come close to being a WoW-Clone or even managing to entice away a few percent of the players. Whatever it is that makes WoW worth 10,000,000 players is not being done in any other game in the market.
Perhaps what we need are WoW Clones... any game at all that has enough content, but with better graphics and more exciting character growth. What we need are more-BETTER-clones.

Actually...being a WoW clone is a part of the problem. See....a person playing WoW has no reason to leave an already perfectly fine game for one JUST like it., but with less financial support and players. Its ludicrous to think anyone is going to leave WoW for a game which plays just the same. Blizzard offers enough new content to render such a need useless, and at least they get to keep the characters they have worked on for 2+ years.
So...I disagree about the "Clone" comment suggesting we need more. or that no one has tried cloning already.
So...I disagree about the "Clone" comment suggesting we need more. or that no one has tried cloning already.
Well... if there are any WoW-Clones in the market already, I have yet to see them. There might be some that I have not tried, but I can't actually think of any. WoW controls the entire market specifically because nobody has tried to duplicate its success.
I see many empty games; many games that think that an empty world with few missions and fewer Item Quests will somehow garner paying populations. The math is simple - the people are playing the only game in the entire MMO market that has lots of missions.
Seriously, that has to be it. WoW, doesn't really have anything else that I can see.
> WoW graphics are subpar (at best) (Most games out in the last 6 years have better graphics.)
> WoW characters are not complex. (Anarchy Online has better character developement)
> WoW spells are not different and interesting (Asheron's Call had a far more interesting spell system)
> WoW combat isn't revolutionary. (Tabula Rasa has a more creative combat system - though very poorly done and horrid for teaming, at least they tried something new)
> WoW teaming isn't good. ( City of Heroes has a much better teaming system...)
WoW, lacks many things that are better in othert games. The only thing it seems to have is lots of short missions. And lots of spoon-feeding of little feel-good rewards every few minutes.
I would love to see a WoW-Clone game. But I honestly can't think of any.

A funny troll. But at least he put some effort into it. Every game will die sooner or later, even World of Warcraft. But it won't happen anytime soon, at least because nine-soon-to-be ten million WoW subscribers (and the number is slowly rising) say otherwise.
Actually, since Blizzard doesn't make public the amount of people who stop subbing the reports are not accurate. They have had UP TO 10 million subscribe. NOT 10 million current live paying subs.
that said, they are still the highest populated MMO and by far the most successful. They will indeed not be dying anytime within the next few years.
No they don't count cancelled subscriptions when they release their subscription numbers. They DO in fact have over 9 million ACTIVE subscribers by their definition of active subscribers which includes anyone who has paid a fee to play the game during the month. It does NOT include cancelled subscribers, nor does it include people who are on the trial period.
I have never seen where they have said current ACTIVE subscribers. I know they have said and sales show how many games have sold around 9 million and it cant be that everyone still has active subs? On top of that how many active subs are WoW gold farmers? Im sure its in the millions and I believe that is why they never release the numbers of active subs. There are a lot of factors that go into the numbers and we are pretty much just looking at the outcome. I find it pretty interesting either way but right now it just seems to be a lot of guessing by both sides.
Here's a link from Blizzard's website. Please read it. There's no guessing required.
I'll summarize it here for you. Blizzard has over 10 million ACTIVE subscribers, they don't count inactive accounts. 2.5m in the US. 2.0m in Europe and approximately 5.5m in Asia. BC sold 2.4 million copies in the first 24 hours and 3.5 million in the first month. That was 12 months ago, no telling how many they have sold now. WoW was the best selling game in 2005 and 2006 and runner up to BC in 2007. Yeah, that's right, BC was tops in 2007 and the original game came in 2nd. They have sold way more than 9 million copies of the game. They probably did that in the first 6 months after the game was released 3 years ago.
I would love to see a WoW-Clone game. But I honestly can't think of any.
You haven't played LotRO then, its a classic attempt at a WOW clone. (and it fails because it offers nothing (outside of the lore) to the WOW player to entice them to leave.
Who the hell are you, and why should I care? Congrats! You are a victim of Trollstar!

Amen.
At the end of the day, people vote with their wallets. And WoW is a clear winner of that vote.
However, you'll find that MMORPG.com is mainly a haven for fanboys who just want to trash every MMO they just can't seem to get into.
What's amusing to me, is that they just keep trying with WoW, and the subs keep growing. FAIL WoW haters. FAIL big time.
